LOS ANGELES - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides on Friday promised to provide health care for all of California's children if elected by closing corporate tax loopholes and tax breaks given to those who earn more than $500,000.
Standing with a group of parents and their children outside a health center in East Los Angeles, Angelides gave brief details about his plan, which he believes would provide health care insurance for children, reduce college tuition and help fund public education.
Angelides, the state treasurer, estimates California would have to roll back about $5 billion in corporate tax loopholes and tax breaks for those earning more than a half-million dollars.
"I'm going to protect working families, I'm going to stand up for them and I'm going to make corporations and multimillionaires pay their fair share," Angelides said.
Health care reform is shaping up to be a key campaign platform leading up to November's election. Angelides and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger this week indicated it would be one of their top priorities if elected.
On Wednesday, Schwarzenegger called for a summit to develop a new health care system that would provide assistance for all Californians. Schwarzenegger has previously opposed a universal health care system but said he may make 2007 "the year of health care" if he remains governor.

How's he gonna pay for it? What's he gonna cut? We don't want higher taxes.
We're screwed.
He says he's going to cut all tax incentives Arnold installed for business and wealthy people. LOL
You mean with either one of them.....Ahnald wants to make it the "Year of Health Care"? Oh boy, are we screwed!
I guess he wrote that position before meathead's plan went down in flames.
There is already a bill in the California Senate for universal healthcare, it would even outlaw private insurance. I forget who sponsored it. These politicians are going to push California to the brink and then over the edge.
We have 1 more yr and we are gone.....hope that's not too late.
There's no such thing as a "corporate" tax. The corporation will simply pass this expense on to the consumer, so, in reality, it's really a consumer tax.
Why limit it to just children? (Yes! We are so screwed! WASS)

Seizing on a Democratic issue, Schwarzenegger also said he ordered his staff to convene a "summit" of hospitals, insurers, employers and unions to craft a new health care system that would cover every California resident and to which all would contribute. If re-elected, Schwarzenegger said he may make next year "the year of health care," though he stopped short of endorsing a universal health care system he has previously opposed.
Don't be so doom and gloomy. I live in Santa Monica, a city that once outlawed private property. I seriously doubt the legality of outlawing private insurance. And it isn't like California suddenly shifted left, it's been like this since before Reagan left Sacramento.
Phil is a buffoon and will do worse than Westly would have.
Universal health care makes me sick to my stomach.
They either have insurance through school, parents or medicade.
Why do they need anything different paid for by taxpayers of CA?
LOL
Oh, greaaaat idea.
Wait till CA hits bankruptcy and levees a tax (known as a disloyalty tax) on all state residents who sell their homes in order to move and transfers their bank accounts to other states. I think some of these libs may enact a law that says you can leave with only $ 10,000 in cash and the rest must be turned over to the state treasury. Police officers supported by leftwing demonstrators (mob) will surround your house to insure compliance. They will spit on you and curse you in Spanish as your family and you walk to your car after you paid the officer at the door. That is my vision of CA in 2050.
Doncha know that "Corporate Tax" and "Corporate Tax Loopholes" resonate well with the mostly ill informed and illiterate DUmmy voters?
:-)
Yep, you're screwed. And you know what will happen, don't you? As the entitlements rise and so do the taxes, the productive citizens will abandon the state, freeing up the room for more welfare-seekers and illegals. The state will have to keep paying more and more for public aid, while collecting less and less in revenue. Eventually, there will be a collapse. And what happens then? The state demands that Washington bail it out. And Washington... complies. 54 electoral votes, remember. Damn it.
