WASHINGTON, D.C., June 12, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The just-retired Cardinal Archbishop of Washington, Theodore E. McCarrick has issued a "clarification" to remarks he made on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, which aired June 7, 2006.
In the context of a discussion on the failed marriage amendment, the Cardinal brought up the issue of same-sex civil unions saying, "I think we can - we can live with that". When Blitzer followed-up on the point asking, "So just explain. You think that you could live with -- you could support civil unions between gays and lesbians, but you wouldn't like them to get formally married, is that right?" Cardinal McCarrick replied, "yes", and went on to discuss his opposition to same-sex "marriage."
In the clarification dated Friday June 9, Cardinal McCarrick states: "I'm afraid that I misspoke last Wednesday when I was being interviewed on CNN." He said his comments were "in no way in favor of a lifestyle that is contrary to the teaching of the Church and Scripture."
It was Blitzer himself who first noted the surprising nature of the Cardinal's remarks about same-sex civil unions. In the teaser Blitzer offered prior to airing the interview, Blitzer stated, "Does a Catholic cardinal agree with the Catholic Church, certainly against gay marriage? You might be surprised to see how he feels about same-sex civil unions."
Cardinal McCarrick said in his defence, "I realized that my words could have given the wrong impression to someone who did not take my remarks in context." He concluded his clarification letter saying, "I regret any confusion my words may have caused because I did not make myself sufficiently clear."
Nowadays people back-pedal shamelessly. "Yes, I admit I called you a drunken wife beater who slept with strange men in bus depots and gambled away your children's college funds -- but my comments were taken out of context!"
I'm betting he got a personal vist from "corporate HQ."
I'm also betting his 'corporate ladder' has just been shortened.
As it should be.
The cardinal is nothing more than a politician. No moral sinew, just a liar making convenient, opportunistic remarks which reveal him as a duplicitous creep. And he is one of the leaders in the church.
"Your Excellency, it's time to go. Please leave now, and don't come back."
Civil unions are marriage by another name. Please tell me why people are too dumb to see that obvious fact.
It's called Hell.
I think the Cardinal went to the 'Pat Robertson School of Stupid On-Camera Quotes'.
I believe the correct phraseology is: "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned."
actually this item is slanted .. maybe reading the original transcript would help
Who is the "we" in his "we can live with that remark?" Another priest in the rectory?
Yes. That and the fact that he is now "Sparrow McCarrick".
I watched this interview and needless to say, I was shocked. To hear a Catholic priest say that he supported gay civil unions was very disturbing. I hope Pope Benedict called him up and gave him "what for."(As they say on the Andy Griffith Show).
Was this a case where he was wheedled into this statement by Blitzer, or was he a willing accomplice?
LOL
Wolf definitely led him down the garden path. On the Cardinal's side, I think he was saying that in order to protect traditional marriage, he would consider gay civil unions. He was kind of stuttering and unsure in his statement but I was still surprised to see him give in so easily.
Pretty strong words. Do you know the Cardinal personally, or is this just your reaction to the interview + "clarification"?
Or, "I regret that my remarks may have been interpreted negatively by some parties."
