PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.
Four doctors operated on Roethlisberger for seven hours to treat multiple facial fractures and "all of the fractures were successfully repaired," Dr. Harry W. Sell, chairman of the surgery department at Mercy Hospital, told reporters late Monday night.
Dr. Daniel Pituch, who led the team, said Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, and doctors were aware of no other serious injuries.
"His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury and there are no other confirmed injuries at this time," he said.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. :)
LOL -- the oops opened outlook express!
Thanks, tina. That was sweet of you to try.
My son played football in middle school and the coach insisted that the boys NOT play any sandlot football or engage in any other high risk activities during the season.
THIS IDIOT DODGED A FRICKIN' BULLET AND IS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE - HE COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN A PARA/QUADAPALEGIC - STEELERS OUGHT TO PUT HIM ON IR FOR UPCOMING SEASON
I noted the same this morning on the first thread right after his accident. This man child has responsibilites and a huge contract. He acted very foolishly and it's cost him and his team. I hope he'll be able to resume his career.
I'm getting lazy, just go to the website.
Nite all, got to get my rest before a big day in the dentist's chair....ugh!
Her info claimed he hit the left side of the car, went over the handlebars of his crotch rocket, hit the left side of his head on the windshield, bounced and landed on the pavement on his knees.
Thing is that was a preliminary report, and in the life cycle of a story that's when you get a lot of conflicting and usually wrong info. So I'm not saying that's what happened but it is what was coming into our newsroom initially.
I do find it curious though the way the stories are being worded... "no other injuries at this time" ...phrases like that.
My guess is they're spending a lot of time evaluating his situtation. Being as young as he is if it's just the injuries they're reporting now, he'll probably be ok by fall, at least for some action.
Last fall I was geocaching with my 15 year old son and took a header off a 15 foot wall onto an asphalt parking lot. I managed to twist and keep my head from hitting first but my right shoulder took the impact. Busted it up pretty good.
That was in the first week of October and it took me about 5 months to even begin to be able to use it normally. But as I mentioned I'm twice Ben's age so He'll probably be OK.
Ben -- Born March 2, 1982.
He's barely 24 years old. Who didn't have or doesn't have at least a couple of decades of growing up to do at that tender age?
By the way, what immature or less-than-mature things did he do on those shows that cause you to say, "I found him not too mature"? Just wondering.
The last appearance of his that I saw with him on Letterman, I believe, when he was getting his beard shaved for the razor sponsor, to me he was perfectly well-adapted and in no way silly or immature. He was great.
What did you see that makes you say that. Again, just wondering.
You Dallas folks may have some different standards.
LOL......... where's that bottle of fine "Seattle whine"?
You said, 'Maybe the helmet reminds him of work.'
When I see someone riding without a helmet, I catch myself thinking, "Well, they don't have much brains in the first place, so why bother with a helmet?" Anyone motorcycling without a helmet gambles with stakes MUCH higher than any I'm willing to take.
It does ruin the experience. I've been told that riding with a helmet is like trying to make love with a woman in the driver's side front seat of a '64 VW bug. Ugh!
But sometimes some experiences need to be curtailed, at least for a while.
