Flag retirement plaza to open

Every morning at sunrise, custodian John L. Kovach Jr. hoists the American flag to the top of the flagpole at Bethel Park's Memorial Elementary School and gives it a snappy salute -- a habit born of military discipline and an abiding love of country.

"No matter how you feel about this issue or that issue, the one thing that blankets us with the security and freedom we enjoy is the American flag," said Kovach, a former Marine and sergeant first class in the Pennsylvania National Guard.

Today - Flag Day - Kovach, 52, of Bethel Park, again will salute as Allegheny County dedicates a flag-retirement plaza in South Park that will be the first of its kind in the county, and perhaps the country.

"We couldn't find one anywhere," said Allegheny County Director of Parks Andy Baechle. "We've been (searching the Internet) since early on, just to see if we could get any ideas for plans. We found out a lot about ceremonies, but nothing on plazas. I'm honored to have it and look forward to using it."

Great idea.

I just passed it on to our Scoutmaster as an idea for an Eagle Scout project.
