Here in the United States we celebrate national holidays that remind us of our country's beginnings and of those who fought and died to protect it. One day in particular, which is most underrated and probably the most important, is Flag Day. The flag of the United States of America is more than red, white and blue, with stars and stripes. The flag represents all that America stands for and what America is.
When we look up at our flag hanging still, or blowing in the wind, we see more than a piece of cloth. We see everything that America represents. The flag represents our freedom to speak our minds, the freedom to protest and to dissent, the freedom to vote for whom we wish and the freedom to worship at any church we choose, or not to worship at all.
It represents the rights of all our citizens, the right for a fair trial, the right of assembly and movement. Our flag represents all that is good about America; all those who defended our nation from enemies abroad and at home, and all those who carried it into battle, and never returned.
The flag of the United States is a cloth of American history sewn together, to remind all of us where America has been, where we are and where we want our nation to go -- to move forward, always moving ahead with freedom for all future generations.
This Flag Day when we look at our flag we should see more than a piece of cloth, colored red, white and blue. We should see our country and all that it represents.

The mass-flyby is amazing!
I put my flag up today at dawn. About an hour later, I went out to get the paper, and noticed that several other houses had also displayed the flag.
Among them were three houses owned by Hmong immigrants who live on my block. Absent the flag were several houses owned by good old-fashioned caucasion Americans...
I salute the families who display the flag on this and other holidays. Those who don't bother are not worth my notice.
When my husband escaped Cuba when Castro first came to power, he told me that when he arrived in Miami's airport one of the first things he noticed was Old Glory flying proudly. He said he finally felt safe and extremely grateful. For many years we've lived in a small village in Upstate New York and without fail, every day he hoists the American Flag outside our home. He is well known and respected in our small community and because of his American flag, many of our neighbors have done the same thing. There were many, many American Flags flying here today. God Bless America and God Bless our military!
I hope you had a good Flag Day!
