Murtha said his stature in defense, and especially his ongoing battle with President Bush and top Republicans over the war in Iraq, makes him a strong candidate for the House leadership role.
So much on the national level right now is related to defense that it is a logical step, Murtha said. And what we have to do now is show the public that there will be change.
Some Republicans see Murthas war activism and his push for the high House seat as being divisive in his own party.
The GOPs position: Keep it up, Jack. A divided Democratic Party is good for all Republicans who are running for national offices.
That may or may not prove true. But this is a fact: The Democrats have not had the House majority since 1994.
Murtha himself must fend off Republican challenger Diana Irey, a Washington County commissioner, to keep his 12th district seat.
An Irey upset in November seems unlikely, but is not impossible especially considering Murthas polarizing stance on Iraq.
It will be interesting to see if Murthas early pitch for the majority-leader position has a positive or negative effect on his partys efforts to regain control of the House, or on his own political standing locally and nationally.

May not sound like a rousing endorsement of her chances, but I'm encouraged that media folks are starting to take notice. What was completely ignored by this author is that Murtha's district only went for Kerry with 51%. That 2-3 points can easily be overcome by the anger Murtha has generated.
Defend your Marine Corps and fight back against Jack Murtha.
Ping
I think he's from blue collar coal country in West Pa. Those folks are usually good old red blooded patriots who may be tired of Jack's bloviating. It would be wonderful in Irey beat him. She is also much easier to look at.
Then how did he get elected?
She's a very attractive candidate. What kind of a chance does she have if things keep improving and looking better for the good guys in Nov?
Knocking off Murtha would be sweet.
Everyone, please FReepmail me if you'd like on or off the Irey/Murtha ping list.
Not sure where I saw it, but, "Run For The Back Jack" will be on at least one of the Sunday morning "news" shows.
Probably more than one. As the elections near and his level of panic rises, I'm sure he'll be a Sunday morning regular.
Then how did he get elected?
"I'm encouraged that media folks are starting to take notice."
Absolutely, the more the media get her name in front of the people of the 12th District, the better her chances.

I live in Murtha's home base, and seeing Murtha go down would be a pleasure. But it isn't going to happen.
Those folks are good old die hard union members; that's how.
He probably got elected because those folks have voted Democrat since FDR, and have not realized the Democrat party they knew, has left them?

| Murtha's "Cut & Run" Comments on Iraq: "there's no progress at all" "it's worse than it was prewar" "we should immediatley redeploy" "War cannot be won on the ground" "I have said it's a civil war" "We cannot win this militarily. Our tactics themselves keep us from winning," |
Murtha's Comments on our Troops: "Would you join (the military) today?," he was asked in an interview. "No," replied Murtha "And I think you're saying the average guy out there who's considering recruitment is justified in saying 'I don't want to serve'," the interviewer continued. "Exactly right," said Murtha "we have become a catalyst for violence" in Iraq Marines "killed innocent civilians in cold blood." at Haditha "I will not excuse murder, and this is what happened" "This is worse than Abu Ghraib" "Hopefully, this is an isolated incident. But we're supposed to be selling ideas of America, ideals of America, and we're losing that war." "These kind of things have to be brought out immediately," he told "This Week," "because if the Marines got away with it, other Marines might think it's okay." "What they're saying to me is we're stretching the military too thin. The army is broken, and we couldn't deploy to a second front if we wanted to." "The troops don't know what to do. They don't have the direction they need in order to supervise the prisoners," |
You're right we're red-blooded patriots. I, unfortunately, am one of Murtha's constituents. An acquaintance of mine is the wife of Murtha's field representative in my hometown. I asked her the other day if she'd seen "Flight 93." Her response was no, that she would be too upset, that she had never seen "Schindler's List" either for the same reason--because she might cry throughout the movie. She also told me once the only novels she reads are ones with happy endings.
I think this attitude typifies the kind of people who support Murtha's approach. Hide from harsh reality, bug out, cut and run. Maybe the bad people will just go away if we pretend they're not there. I almost called this woman a wimp to her face, but I bit my tongue. I hope western PA people are getting sick of Murtha's constant whining and hysterical outbursts. In my mind, he's becoming a joke. And I can't believe western Pennsylvanians want to be represented by a defeatist and a laughingstock.
Ding, Ding!!!!!! We have a winner. That's the nuts and bolts of it, plus all the defense contracts he brings in.
That's so disgusting on so many levels. Ugh!
Hopefully you are wrong.
My thanks to you both.
I find the mere fact that he hasn't been
run out of town on a rail fascinating.
Maybe this time...
Irey bump!
I hope you're wrong like a lot of people were wrong about Tom Daschle.
Good job Tonk!!!
I read that, and I see red.
Amazing that such traitorous comments comne out of the mouth of a former Marine.
And I say former on purpose. He has become semper infidelis.
Heh -- I have seen some Marines on this board calling him and "EX-Marine" -- it fits doesn't it??
semper infidelis -- LOL!!!!
They've been voting for the man for 30 yrs and that isn't going to change. One BIG factor here they despise any kind of change. They still live in the 50's 60's and 70's here.
You Diana Irey folks need to get Congresswoman Jean Schmidt a few apologies from some other conservatives.
She had Murtha pegged from the beginning; she coined the "cut and run" line about him; she called the dems exactly by the numbers.....and then she got hung out to dry.
Female candidate Irey needs to conference with Jean Schmidt.
He has become the Antimarine.
Good. The more he flaps his jaw, the more he shows his true (ugly) colors. It can only help the Irey campaign.

You forgot one.
Yeah, until they figure it out, they're their own worst enemy.
Thanks for the ping, Tonk.
Makes me wish I could vote in Mrs. Irey's district.
I can't do that, but I can send some more money to her, and I will!
Based on your comment, I'd say I know more about your district than you do. But thanks for the input.
Perhaps later you'll decide to be a part of the solution instead of, well, you know...
Becahse it was over three decades ago. And he's pro life and used to be pro military. He's lurched left considerably the past few years.
Former Marine is the correct term for regular veterans. Murtha is an EX-Marine like Lee H. Oswald or Clayton Lonetree.
Bush took 49% of your district supposedly still living in past decades.
She was simply reading a letter from a Marine (I think one of her constituents).
Whether Rep. Murthas understanding of the Haditha incident is spurious or not, leaking information about the investigation from his committee sources or others, and providing accompanying graphic oratory, demonstrates a sense of fulfillment for him. Regardless of investigation findings, he has constructed a theatrical prop to advance his agenda that our military of failed individuals is failing in prosecuting the Three Block War in Iraq. If the allegations are proven, they represent symptomatic behavior, and if false, then a shameful cover up has occurred.
Any current or former Marine experiences deep sorrow for what might be a family tragedy. It is so difficult to maintain values of courage, honor, and commitment against the continuous, invasive influence of a civilian world wholly dedicated to self. The proper response would have been expressions of compassion and prayer for those who might have failed and those who might have died needlessly.
Rep. Murthas actions validate his credentials to be considered an ex-Marine.
Danny Bubp...one of our area state legislators.
Who then went mum on her along with the rest of the conservative movement.
But everyone uses "cut and run."
BTW, she won against a newly returned Iraqi vet.
When I'm done with grad school I will take care of the problem. And Mr. Know-It-All, maybe if you came and spent sometime in Johnstown you might get a firm pragmatic and realistic view of just how it is here.
I don't know it all, not by a longshot. But I know more about this race than you do. By a longshot.
I'm not sure I'm following you. This state legislator, he's the Marine who sent her the letter she read, yes?
Correct.
He's a Col. in the Marine Reserve (a Lawyer.) But when she went public, he went mum. In his defense, he might not have given her leave to read to private letter. On the other hand, he might have "cut and run."
It's all about jobs here and Murtha brings the big defense pork barrel bacon. Now I'm not in tune with Washington, Greene, and Fayette counties, but Westmorland, Somerset, Cambria, Indiana, and Armstrong are pretty much Murtha.
There is no chance that Diana Irey will raise or spend even 20% as much as Mad Jack this time around, but Irey IS spending enough to get her message out, and every time the traitorous scumbag opens his mouth, it counts as more free advertising for Irey.
In politics, spending a lot of dough doesn't guarantee success, but NOT spending it guarantees failure. Irey's hopefully got enough - and will get more - and will be hammering away from now until November.
There you go. Ex then is for one who repudiates, who decides to be infidelis.
Murtha the Ex-marine infidel. If the shoe fits...
Judging from his appearance, murtha may not be a problem too much longer, re-elected or not. Not that I'm wishing anything bad on him, but nobody lives forever.
Jack Murtha engages in a crapshoot every time he opens his mouth.
