Nobel winners call on US to ease up on North Korea

Sat Jun 17, 8:54 AM ET

The United States should end sanctions on North Korea and the North must be open for inspectors to help end a standoff over the North's atomic ambitions, Nobel Peace Prize winners said on Saturday.

The recommendation from a group of 10 individuals and organizations who won the Nobel Prize comes as regional tensions are high over the North's refusal to return to six-country nuclear talks and worries it may soon test fire a missile.

The group called on North Korea to return to the stalled six-party nuclear talks and for it to "completely abandon its nuclear weapons policy and accept international inspectors," it said in a statement.

"We also call for the U.S. to end financial and economic sanctions on the DPRK and offer security guarantees," it said.

U.S. officials have cracked down on the finances of firms it suspects of aiding North Korea, which is officially called the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, in illicit activities such as counterfeiting U.S. currency and drug running.

Washington has objected to those who call the financial measures "sanctions," saying it is simply trying to protect its currency and legal norms.

In September 2005, the six parties in the nuclear talks -- the two Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the United States -- reached a deal where Pyongyang would scrap its nuclear weapons programs in exchange for aid and security assurances.

The group of laureates included former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and top officials from Amnesty International.

The group was meeting in the southwestern city of Kwangju for celebrations of Kim's unprecedented summit meeting with North Korea leader Kim Jong-il six years ago.

It just goes to show, even if you're a Nobel Peace Prize winner, you can still be idiotic.

Reuters can't even get simple facts straight.
That should be:
"... Nobel Appeasement Prize winners said on Saturday."

Re #4

It is tailor-made for useful idiots or "unusually good" liars. Kim Dae-jung is the latter.

Promote peace: Let North Korea sell nukes around the world!

That's almost good for a tagline.

"It just goes to show, even if you're a Nobel Peace Prize winner, you can still be idiotic."

Best examples: Jimmy Carter, Yassar Arafat.

Nuff said about the Nobel Prize. It has become meaningless and a politically correct baloney prize.

Nobel prize winners want us to ease up? That settles it for me, say no more. Time to lock and load one 30 Megaton magazine. Fire at will. The short guy with the thick glasses is Will.

Ship them all there as a form of food aid. It would be humanitarian both to the recipients [who will get something to sink their teeth in] and to us [we'll be rid of the gasbags]. True win-win situation.

"2006 Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates"

This is such a steaming pile of bovine excrement. As many have noted, all kinds of imbeciles can and have won the Nobel Peace Prize, including dimwits like Peanut Carter and truly evil psychopaths like Yassir Arafart..... so an endorsement of an idea from a few of these types means less than squat.... in general, the "peace" outlook rewarded by the Nobel Peace Prize committee is one of imbecilic servility to the world's worst tyrants and dictators, with a few notable exceptions such as Elie Wiesel..... ....so these very few activists are using their prize to pretend that their position on North Korea is the only correct one for all peace-loving people everywhere.

Let us remind these morons of all the countless times that their approach to 'peace' has been tried and found wanting, badly.

If they launch this missile its an act of WAR, Mr. Bush had better be paying attention to this. We cannot allow a madman to be able to Nuke the west coast. We need to respond with extreme force, also hit Beijing too, they are playing us for a fool. How about a couple nice EMP warheads to send a message. Shit our reputation, due to our own media, could not get worse then now. Do em! Iran will give up their nukes too I bet after this show,. China is behind all global terrorism, its part of their total war plan.

"Nobel winners" often means, particularly for the Peace Prize and Literature Prize, "socialists favored the socialists running the Norwegian parliament."

We're supposed to ease up on North Korea?

How about North Korea easing up on the people of North Korea?

Why is the missile test such a big deal? If they put a hole in a roof in Tokyo of course they would have to pay for the repairs, but they should otherwise have free access to outer space like everybody else.

"We also call for the U.S. to end financial and economic sanctions on the DPRK and offer security guarantees," it said.

***

Why didn't these Nobel Prize winners or for that matter, Reuters- mention something resembling the following in the news report
....that it was Bill Clinton and his delusional 1996 "Agreed Framework" plan in which he *gave* North Korea two twin, light water nuclear reactors. Clinton called it his 'plan' so that Congress didn't get to vote on it. All that was required of North Korea was that they sign a piece of paper stating that they wouldn't use the two nuke reactors to make nuclear bombs. North Korea promptly tore up the paperwork /dumped it in the trash.

Hence, it was Bill Clinton and the democrats who fully armed North Korea with nuclear bombs.

***

this is what should have been stated by the Nobel laureates and/or Reuters.

Excuse me?!?! Just WHO is it that has an intercontinental missile capable of reaching America gassed up, on the pad and ready to fire?

The Nobel Prize should go the way of the dinosaurs. It is meaningless and has become an embarrassment to civilization.

The Nobel Peace Prize just doesn't have the status it once had. The main requirement now seems to be the willingness to take on Republicans and make an absolute a** out of oneself in public.
