The Chinese want boys, and the Canadians want girls. If they have enough money, they come to the United States to choose the sex of their babies.
Well-off foreign couples are getting around laws banning sex selection in their home countries by coming to American soil where it's legal for medical procedures that can give them the boy, or girl, they want.
"Some people spend $50,000 to $70,000 for a BMW car and think nothing of it, but this is a life that's going to be with us forever," said Robert, an Australian who asked that his last name not be used to protect the family's privacy.
He and his wife, Joanna, have two boys. Now they want a girl. Australia only allows gender selection of embryos to avoid an inherited disease.
The United States' lack of regulation means a growing global market for a few fertility clinics. These businesses advertise in airline magazines or post Web sites aimed at luring clients worldwide.

The world is going down the crapper even faster.
Moral Absolutes/Canada/OMG ping.
One company in Northern VA will only permit the sex section if and only if the couple has one baby of a opposite sex.
Moral Absolutes/Canada/OMG ping.
You said it.
So which list am I on? Moral Absolutes, Canada, or OMG?
Seriously though, this is sick and unreal.
I just said OMG to get my general feeling across to those I was pinging. It's not necessarily a ping list.
But you know...the first thing that came to mind when reading this was Nazi Germany. You know, their euthanization of the elderly and the sick?
This 'prebirth sex change' parallels that situation IMO, for some reason. Anybody else thinking that?
Sorry, but I disagree. If a couple really have their heart set on a boy or a girl, and they have the $$ to make their dream come true, fine by me.
I was just being a smart a** to try and bring some humor to a very serious thread, but I agree, that's exactly what I was thinking.
Just killing the babies the rest of the world doesn't want to kill.
Huh? What about the decline in male population during and after a war? Is your statement based upon any evidence or did you just make it up?
So why is this an issue with (p)MSNBC? If the couple wanted to come to the US to have an abortion, they would be hailed as heroes!
Yet another indication of the MSM's pro-death bias.
From what I have read, gender selection is ONLY available in the US for couples who already have a child of one gender and for inherited genetic disorders.
You can't just go and say you want a boy or a girl for your first child. The purpose is for family balancing.
I don't see what the problem is if a couple already has several of one gender and wants to complete their family with a child of the other gender. As long as no embyros are destroyed.
I think this is a good thing IMHO.
Oh, Geez... that's all we need.
They just need to go to Canada where apparently all the women will be ;^)
Who put the "homosexual agenda" keyword? That sort of stuff messes up the keyword searches.
Cheapening of Life continues. What kind of a man wants their child to be conceived via a test tube anyway (assuming there are no fertility problems that make it necessary)?
If people were sorting out gay gened babies, I guarantee the media take on this would be totally different.
Hitler dreamed of things like this.
What sick, Godless world. This is what too much money can do to people......
Young males are a a volatile group of people to begin with.
I know that I would be pissed.
The people running these fertility clinics are reactionary scum, and should bne sued for hate crimes.
Imagine, in this day and age, claiming to offer "sex selection", and only giving two choices.
If parents want to balance their families, and are willing to pay the several hundred thousand dollars it takes these days to raise a child through college, then the cost of gender selection constitutes a small fraction of that total cost.
I have three sons. I don't see the problem with choosing to have a daughter next. Or vice versa. It's OK by me if it's for family balancing.
Yes, but it won't stop there. First, it's gender. Then hair and eye color....then what? Custom made babies just sounds like a sick idea to me. I have three boys also and I'm so thankful for what God blessed me with. I would have loved to have a girl but don't feel an obsessive need to have one. My family is complete with my beautiful boys!
Please FReepmail me to get on or off this Canada ping list.

Soon we will be at a point where the eugenicists are killing dozens of embryos for every birth.
To be included in or removed from the MORAL ABSOLUTES PINGLIST, please FReepMail wagglebee.
I think this particular article is only sick in terms of the fact that the clinic is fertilizing multiple eggs and then "weeding out" the non-keepers. THAT is sad and sick. However, I don't see anything regarding the practice of filtering only the semen to eliminate the unwanted gender and *then* fertilizing the egg (as we all know, only the semen determines gender and the egg is neutral until fertilized).
As the proud mother of 3 boys with baby boy # 4 due to arrive tomorrow, I would absolutely pay $15-20,000 to "buy" a girl next time around (although, physically, I don't think I can do a next time). The heartache and sadness I felt when finding out my new baby was not a girl was horrible. I will always love & adore all of my sons, but I will forever grieve at the loss of a mother/daughter relationship and all that entails. BUT, if given the choice of "tossing" unwanted boy embryos were the only way to get a girl, forget about it! The boys can be filtered at the sperm stage and that's how it should be done (although I'm sure the level of accuracy isn't quite as great).
This is definitely a case of needing to walk a mile in their shoes to understand completely.
