The Rove Factor? Time magazine talked to Bush's guru for Plame story.
MSNBC & Newsweek ^ | July 11 issue | Michael Isikoff

Posted on 06/18/2006 1:48:54 PM PDT by rface

ts legal appeals exhausted, Time magazine agreed last week to turn over reporter Matthew Cooper's e-mails and computer notes to a special prosecutor investigating the leak of an undercover CIA agent's identity. The case has been the subject of press controversy for two years. Saying "we are not above the law," Time Inc. Editor in Chief Norman Pearlstine decided to comply with a grand-jury subpoena to turn over documents related to the leak. But Cooper and Judith Miller (NYTimes) are still refusing to testify and face jail this week......

The e-mails surrendered by Time Inc., which are largely between Cooper and his editors, show that one of Cooper's sources was White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove......It is unclear, however, what passed between Cooper and Rove.

The controversy began three days before the Time piece appeared, when columnist Robert Novak, writing about Wilson's trip, reported that Wilson had been sent at the suggestion of his wife, who was identified by name as a CIA operative......Novak appears to have made some kind of arrangement with the special prosecutor.

Cooper agreed to discuss his contact with Scooter Libby, after Libby gave him permission to do so. But Cooper drew the line when special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald asked about other sources......

According Rove's lawyer, Rove spoke to Cooper three or four days before Novak's column appeared. and that Rove "never knowingly disclosed classified information" and that "he did not tell any reporter that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA." Rove himself has testified before the grand jury "two or three times" and has signed a waiver authorizing reporters to testify about their conversations with him....

Novak appears to have made some kind of arrangement with the special prosecutor.

Interesting. It's a plausible theory, but has the MSM said this openly before?

They just can't let this non-story go can they?

The liberal media had their mind made up about Karl Rove before Bush ever got elected. Of course, political operatives like Carville or Begalla are holy patriarchs according to the MSM.

"But Cooper (and a New York Times reporter, Judith Miller) is still refusing to testify and faces jail this week."

Judith Miller eventually went to jail, lost about 30 pounds (presumably her goal), testified, and went on an extended vacation to the South of France, didn't she? She is now retired from the NY Times and waiting for the GJ to expire, so she can shop her book? Or something? Interesting that Time doesn't bother to dateline its articles with the year! It will be very interesting comparing all versions of all the stories in all the books -- something like a blind Algore describing Manbearpig. Nice that the only one who's been frog-marched to the hoosegow so far has been a NY Times reporterette.

Oh, yeah -- and Cooper ratted out his source at the first drop of a subpoena. So much for confidentiality.

To Michael Isikoff and others:

Keep this story alive for us, ok? It's going to be great during the heat of the election campaign when the case against Libby is either dropped, and Fitzgerald is shown to be the liberal bias fool that he is, or Libby gets acquitted.

This will be great stuff on a daily basis (for the Republicans) this fall when this story plays in the news every day.

Again, thanks Michael Isikoff, NewswWeek, Time, NYT, WashPost, Wilson, Plame, CNN, Blitzer, etc.

And in the latest hearings on information from media, as subpoened by Team Libby, the Judge said that Time Mag MUST give all their info to Team Libby NOW, because the information shows that Cooper is an impeachable witness. In other words, Cooper's own material shows he is a liar. Some of the legal beagles have suggested that Fitzy may drop those charges against Libby where Cooper's testimony is needed for trial.

Matthew Cooper is not the kind to thrive in general population. I saw him speak at Princeton about Plamegate and he was in his glory with crowd 99% comprised of fanwing sycophants.

When asked it anyone in the media had written conclusively about whether Plame is or is NOT a "covert agent" as defined in the law, he's weak answer was, "I hate to admit it, I don't know of any."

Novak appears to have made some kind of arrangement with the special prosecutor.

The alien media nation is so infested with "groupthink" that not one has considered the posibility that Novak has no criminal liability.

What maroons these journalists be.

The Libs just wont let this thing die!

.It is unclear, however, what passed between Cooper and Rove.

And although there probably is diddely squat in the email implicating Rove, now the Dims can keep the conspiricy alive for yet another 2 years

According to Novak, never disputed by anyone, CIA itself confirmed her employment at CIA.

If she were undercover, that would not happen. You can't call up a spy agency, and ask if so-and-so is a spy, and they just answer you. Sure, you got us. She's a spy.

If CIA itself will confirm her employment, she is not undercover. Period. This is a bogus controversy.

She was, however, an undercover DNC operative at CIA, apparently one of any number of them. Exposing a DNC operative has consequences; between DNC press and DNC attorneys and judges, they can ruin your life.

Isikoff

The name rings a bell.

Newsweek apologized yesterday [May 15, 2005] for an inaccurate report on the treatment of detainees that triggered several days of rioting in Afghanistan and other countries in which at least 15 people died....The item was principally reported by Michael Isikoff, Newsweek's veteran investigative reporter...

"The leak to Novak, apparently intended to discredit Wilson's mission, caused a furor when it turned out that Palme was an undercover agent."

Hmmm.... the problem with this statement is that it turned out that Valerie Plame WAS NOT an undercover agent. If she was then Libby would most certainly have been charged with leaking her status.

I really don't understand how people who are supposedly smart enough to run our country cannot apply simple logic or use critical thinking.
