A dazzling gold-flecked 1907 portrait by Gustav Klimt has been purchased for the Neue Galerie in Manhattan by the cosmetics magnate Ronald S. Lauder for $135 million, the highest sum ever paid for a painting.
The portrait, of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the wife of a Jewish sugar industrialist and the hostess of a prominent Vienna salon, is considered one of the artist's masterpieces. For years, it was the focus of a restitution battle between the Austrian government and a niece of Mrs. Bloch-Bauer who argued that it was seized along with four other Klimt paintings by the Nazis during World War II. In January all five paintings were awarded to the niece, Maria Altmann, now 90, who lives in Los Angeles, and other family members.

Cool! I love it when I can actually make out what the subject of a painting is.
Not that I don't dislike modern art but some of it is just crap.

Looks like Katie Couric's official CBS portrait.

I used to read about the long drawn out litigation. I'm surprised that a Klimt has drawn such a figure though.

That's my favorite Klimt. I like it much better than The Kiss.

To paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield...
Party Guest: Your wife was just showing me her Kilmt.
Rodney: You too? She shows it to everbody!!!

"Party Guest: Your wife was just showing me her Kilmt."
Reminds me of an old Playboy cartoon, in the Old South, where a Southern Gentleman military-type is lifting up the skirt of a Southern Belle as they stand in a colonial-style garden. Her indignant comment is: "Colonel Hawkins, that is NOT what I meant when I asked if you wanted to see my gazebo!"

That painting is so famous...even I've seen it! It's a gorgeous painting.

Are you sure? His most famous painting is the "Kiss" which looks remarkably like this.

A couple links above. If I'm not mistaken, the family was Klimt's patron.

Well, at least you can tell it's a painting.
Previously, the art world gave an official prize to the pedestal and board a sculpture was supposed to be standing upon.
(The sculpture, missing from the "exhibit" of the pedestal and board, was not awarded a prize in its absence.) The sculptor of the missing sculpture was heard to complain about the lack of a prize for a lack of a sculpture, saying in effect, "the absence of art is art" in today's modern art world.
