Dan Rather severs his ties with CBS (sniff! sniff!)

NEW YORK - Dan Rather, the hard-charging anchorman who dominated CBS News for more than two decades but whose final months were clouded by a discredited story on the president’s military service, is leaving CBS after 44 years, the network announced Tuesday.

The 74-year-old Rather has complained of being virtually forgotten at CBS Corp. since his exit as anchor last year, six months after the story on President Bush’s military service aired. He has said he is considering an offer to do a weekly show at the HDNet high-definition network.

“There will always be a part of Dan Rather at CBS News,” said Sean McManus, CBS News president. “He is truly a ‘reporter’s reporter,’ and he has helped to train several generations of broadcast journalists. His legacy cannot be replicated.”

Rather said that his departure before the end of his contract represented CBS’ acknowledgment, “after a protracted struggle, that they had not lived up to their obligation to allow me to do substantive work there.”. . .

He went out as well as we could have ever hoped for:

Humiliated on national TV.

Professionally disgraced.

Exposed as incompetent and partisan.

Marginalized by the company for which he worked for decades.

Ignominiously pushed out by people he had always thought were his friends and allies.

Remember, this is a guy who arrogantly refused to perform a broadcast and forced CBS to put on dead air, all in response to a perceived slight.

He's got to be eating hsi heart out over this situation.

Dan Rather should work for the LDNet low-definition network. It will be harder to identify which typeface he is using.

“He is truly a ‘reporter’s reporter,’

If cozying up to dictators like Saddam and Castro and being hostile to the President of the United States is considered an honorable trait.

CNN silenced reports of abuse under Saddam to keep their Baghdad bureau. I guess they took their cue from Dan Ratherbiased.

And aren't reporters supposed to fact check a story before running with it? Especially in an election year when an associate of the DNC faxes you some damning "documents" about the opposition party candidate? And shouldn't you acknowledge the skepticism at least some are voicing about the authenticity of those documents (when cracks in the story are exposed)?

“He is truly a ‘reporter’s reporter,’

If a reporter is a puffed-up liberal with delusion of grandeur, then Rather's a reporter's reporter -- he's more delusional than average, more liberal than average and definitely more puffed-up.

All these years, faithfully covering and lying for the dems like a good little socialist shill, now he's vitually pushed out the door when he's no longer of any use. Should be sad for him but... HAHAHA!

“after a protracted struggle, that they had not lived up to their obligation to allow me to do substantive work there.”.

The problem that CBS had with giving Rather "substantive work" is that Rather had zero credibility, even among leftists.

I don't know what Rather really expected to be able to do at a network that wants to be taken seriously.

So let me get this straight. This hard charging reporter's reporter, highly skilled in ferreting out the nuances of a difficult story, digging for the underlying scenarios, etc, doesn't get it? Your discredited former employer is trying to give the boot to their former discredited and disemboweled news anchor. Sheesh; buy a clue Dan!
