NEW YORK - Dan Rather, the hard-charging anchorman who dominated CBS News for more than two decades but whose final months were clouded by a discredited story on the presidents military service, is leaving CBS after 44 years, the network announced Tuesday.
The 74-year-old Rather has complained of being virtually forgotten at CBS Corp. since his exit as anchor last year, six months after the story on President Bushs military service aired. He has said he is considering an offer to do a weekly show at the HDNet high-definition network.
There will always be a part of Dan Rather at CBS News, said Sean McManus, CBS News president. He is truly a reporters reporter, and he has helped to train several generations of broadcast journalists. His legacy cannot be replicated.
Rather said that his departure before the end of his contract represented CBS acknowledgment, after a protracted struggle, that they had not lived up to their obligation to allow me to do substantive work there.. . .

He is truly a liberal reporters reporter.
There will always be a part of Dan Rather at CBS News, - I guess the toilets are backed up.
Cue "Thanks for the memories..."
Nah, he did a top decker before he left.
The janitor is going to be pissed!
"There will always be a part of Dan Rather at CBS News,
I was thinking he lost his hair piece.
Humiliated on national TV.
Professionally disgraced.
Exposed as incompetent and partisan.
Marginalized by the company for which he worked for decades.
Ignominiously pushed out by people he had always thought were his friends and allies.
Remember, this is a guy who arrogantly refused to perform a broadcast and forced CBS to put on dead air, all in response to a perceived slight.
He's got to be eating hsi heart out over this situation.
Someone needs to light a match.
Puff piece giveaway.
Courage, Dan. Courage.
CBS with Dan Rather was nothing more than the cBS version of Hannity & Colmes without the Hannity.

But will he wear a cocktail dress and sing on a piano?
Everytime somebody fakes an expense account, makes up a phony story, or otherwise concocts a fradulent document, his memory will be honored...

ADIOS!!
Doogle
Wow, even the AP writes that the story was "discredited"?
Hell. Freeze. Over.
Dan Rather should work for the LDNet low-definition network. It will be harder to identify which typeface he is using.
Yeah, you're right. When the collective vast right-wing conspiracy started years ago with "Rather Biased" and so on, I doubt we ever really thought we'd see this day and see it so splendidly.
Well done, friends, well done!
I think it was the other way around, Dan.
Dan who??
Oh, Dan "Cry Me A River" Rather?
Has been. Did I hear that he's going to be anchoring the news on a channel Mark Cuban is starting up?

Courage, Dan... Courage.
Looks to me like CBS severed their ties with Dan-o.
"There will always be a part of Dan Rather at CBS News, . . . ."
I was thinking of the skin off his fingers from trying to claw his way back in.
"Rather said CBS had offered him an office . . . "
. . . with a cresent moon on the door.
There will always be a part of Dan Rather at CBS News, - I guess the toilets are backed up.
So is Dan. Call the Rotter Rooter man for both.
I've seen Michelle Pfieffer, and dan is NO Micehelle!
He is truly a reporters reporter,
If cozying up to dictators like Saddam and Castro and being hostile to the President of the United States is considered an honorable trait.
CNN silenced reports of abuse under Saddam to keep their Baghdad bureau. I guess they took their cue from Dan Ratherbiased.
And aren't reporters supposed to fact check a story before running with it? Especially in an election year when an associate of the DNC faxes you some damning "documents" about the opposition party candidate? And shouldn't you acknowledge the skepticism at least some are voicing about the authenticity of those documents (when cracks in the story are exposed)?
There once was a guy named Dan
Who thought he was quite the man
He made up news-stories
To give himself glory
And now he's in TV's ashcan.
Just saying, if he is truly a "reporter's reporter".
Sounds more like he's the "DNC's reporter" owned (and paid for?).
'eff off Rather, you suck, you always have and you always will...
If a reporter is a puffed-up liberal with delusion of grandeur, then Rather's a reporter's reporter -- he's more delusional than average, more liberal than average and definitely more puffed-up.
"Rather said that his departure before the end of his contract represented CBS acknowledgment, after a protracted struggle, that they had not lived up to their obligation to allow me to do substantive work there.
What an idiot. Did he really believe that cover story? Where's the "pity party" being held? This is a great day for conservatives !!
The problem that CBS had with giving Rather "substantive work" is that Rather had zero credibility, even among leftists.
I don't know what Rather really expected to be able to do at a network that wants to be taken seriously.
I think Dan and Connie should do a "Thanks for the Memories" duet.
That's all we need - Dan Rather in high definition!
Hey, Dante, figured out yet that forged documents are even easier to spot in HD? Just curious.
Hey Danny Boy-
Happy traaaaaaaaaaaaaails to youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
untilllll we meeeeeeeet agaaaaaaaaain...(NOT!)
Last night on Leno they showed a clip of "Rather" saying goodbye while doing a striptease in a thong. He was pretty good. LOL.
So let me get this straight. This hard charging reporter's reporter, highly skilled in ferreting out the nuances of a difficult story, digging for the underlying scenarios, etc, doesn't get it? Your discredited former employer is trying to give the boot to their former discredited and disemboweled news anchor. Sheesh; buy a clue Dan!
Heh, maybe Dan's just angling for a better buyout??? In any case, captain Dan, sans teleprompter; showcasing his lunacy, has got to irk the PTB at cBS. I say HOLD THEIR FEET TO THE FIRE DAN!
