Dan Rather, one of the giants of American broadcast journalism, is to leave the channel he has worked at for 44 years, for a position at a little watched cable channel. CBS announced yesterday that Rather, 74, would be leaving the channel where he hosted the evening news for 24 years until he stood down last year.

Rather has said in recent days that he was unhappy with the new role being offered him at the channel, where he has covered most of the big stories of the past 40 years, from the Kennedy assassination to the invasion of Iraq.
In September 2004, however, he introduced and subsequently defended a report questioning George Bush's National Guard service during the Vietnam war. The report relied on documents that were revealed as fakes, and in its aftermath Rather stepped down as evening news anchor, taking a reporting role on the 60 Minutes programme. However he has been used only eight times in a year, and complained last week in an interview with the New York Times that he had been given nothing to do for six weeks. Relations with the network appear to have deteriorated when he was offered a contract that included an office and an assistant but no affiliation with any programme.

Rather, who is in negotiations with the HDNet channel to front a weekly interview programme, has spent much of his recent downtime watching the film Good Night and Good Luck, George Clooney's tribute to Ed Murrow and the groundbreaking television reporting of the 50s. He is said to have seen it five times.

Courage.
What's the frequency, Kenneth?......... Kenneth?
He's so totally pathetic. Good night, good luck, and good effing riddance.
Let's give it six months, just for laughs, then Old Dan can sing "Thanks for the Memories" ala Connie Chung last week, LOL!
Thanks again Mr. Robinson, for Free Republic! You had a BIG hand in knocking this idiot off his pedestal via the availability of this forum. God Bless You! :)
Courage.
won't miss him, haven't watched him, hate his creepy guts, and my opinion of CBS has risen to a high of .0000012 on a scale of 1 - 10 for helping him see the door and humiliating him to boot.....
Did he join ALgores channel? It would be a perfect fit.
Their newspapers will be next.
Out with a whimper ... you giant @ss!
You covered the events all right - and spun them with your twisted mind.
Why do you think it is that so many have so little or no respect for you Dan?
Interesting that the Guardian understand the documents were fake, but Dan and Mapes still won't admit it. He did so much bad "reporting" during his years at CBS. I'm glad he was finally brought down and sorry it took so long.
I guess he has too big an ego to simply retire and fade into obscurity.
This reminds me of the producer for nightline who was fired after the segment about the flaming saddle tanks on the Ford F-150's. I heard he ended up editing some paper in Arkansas.
Does "quit" equal "fired" in Guardianspeak?
Morons in charge at CBS were asleep at the switch, and never acted on criticism they knew was valid until it was too late.
Even after Bernard Goldberg (a former CBS reporter) blew the whistle with his book "Bias" did nothing to cause the management at CBS to act.
Can anyone believe now that CBS once trusted Dan Rather and Connie Chung to be their co-anchors and representatives for credibility?
Great! just what we need, Dans wrinkly lying old puss in high def.
Courage indeed!
Is that the Home Shopping Network?
Mr Rather should be going to jail rather than to another job. His biased reporting of the fake Bush military memos was election tampering IMHO......
I Hope CBS is Next.

Here's hoping Dan does a cameo in the sequel: "Goodbye and Good Riddance"
The destruction of Dan Rather was a pleasure to watch because the same fate awaits the current Democrat Party at the polls this year and in 2008. Rather was a traitor found out by the American people. As a side bar Katie Couric will follow the same path. She is done and doesn't know it. The current Democrat Party is also a traitor to these United States, and with each passing day the American voting public gets real scoop on the treasonous Democrats.
Your a horrible human being Dan.
Go write a book.....about your experience as a marine.
Did he go to NSN? The News Shopping Network

Di, I love your cBS Eye :)
Yes, Rather was offered that job by Mark Cuban, the "odd" owner of the Dallas Mavericks...ugh.
The real question in in mind is... if a tree doesn't fall in the woods, will Dan Rather still get a Fax from Kinkos saying it did.
As per audience I would say the rivalry is now between Dan Rather on his cable station and Al Gore on his station. The ratings winner will be determined exclusively by which station Tipper watches (unless of course their up against teletubbies and she defects).
I "borrowed" it from somewhere; had it since that old scandal broke. Feel free to use it. :)
Dan has finally given up his old IBM. Hee hee

George Clooney persuaded Cuban to co-finance Good Night, and Good Luck, earning him executive producer status.
This is the journalism equivalent of a former heavyweight boxing champion becoming a "greeter" at a casino!
Eat crap & die Dan!
It would be interesting to see how the Guardian characterized the Cuban-promoted new job if Mark Cuban were the owner of Man United FC (instead of the other American Owner). Then the Brits would know what an odd owner was all right. And heaven only knows what Cuban would be yelling at FIFA officials.
What is that? Never heard of it. Guess that suits him, though, since no one watched him anyway.
He was FIRED.
And my tears fall like rain.
No, really, they do.
Stop laughing, dammit!
Now I'm really howling.
Honey, let's hold off on the high-def until after Dan melts down for good?
I just wonder how many other "fake but accurate" stories he ran on us in the last forty years.
Judging by the chutzpah he displayed in standing behind a story that was obviously fake, I suspect that there were many.
Just another thing to blame Mark Cuban for!
Altho I love the Mavs.
By the way, go Mavs.
LOL...I don't know if the Soccer leagues fine as heavily as the NBA...another 250 MILLION he was fined today...yikes!
Small cable channel?? That must be CNN.... small in viewership.
If you are referring to Michael Gartner:
- I believe the trucks were Chevrolets
- He was defiant, same as Rather, even after the story had been exposed as a fraud
- I believe he went back to Iowa to work on his hometown paper
ADDENDUM: I checked Wikipedia. No mention of his journalistic fraud. Hmmmmmmmmm.
OOPSY, it was 250 THOUSAND, not Million...LOL
Although he could pay a 250 million dollar fine if he had to..
Dan Rather Busts Coupon Copying Ring at the Bronson Big Chief. Undercover investigation nets fifty two fake but accurate Gorton Fishstick coupons with triple value Tuesday savings. "Thanks to Dan, the bleeding has stopped and the Big Chief can finally put an end to this nightmare. We all owe him a debt of gratitude in this town. He does have a nose for news and I am certain he will spend the rest of his life fighting to change the world. Starting with Bronson."
Mavs were up 13...now they are only up 9!! ugh.
And Michael Gartner was PRESIDENT of NBC News, not a producer.
