(Jeb)Bush suspends Winton pending outcome of airport fracas case

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush issued an executive order Tuesday suspending Miami City Commissioner Johnny Winton from office pending the outcome of criminal charges stemming from an altercation Winton had with police at Miami International Airport last month.

Police say an intoxicated Winton struck police at MIA after his flight was canceled May 15. He banged his head against a wall at one point, chipped one officer's tooth and kicked another officer in the groin, officials say.

Winton has entered not-guilty pleas to two felony counts of battery on a police officer and a misdemeanor count of disorderly intoxication. The felony counts each carry a maximum prison sentence of five years, while the maximum jail time for the misdemeanor is 60 days.

On November 2, 1999, Johnny L. Winton was elected to serve a four-year term as a City of Miami Commissioner representing District 2.

He currently serves as president of WynCo Realty Partners, Inc., a real estate investment company in Miami. Prior to WynCo Realty Partners, Inc., Commissioner Winton, was an executive with United Blood Services and the American Red Cross, not-for-profit blood bank organizations. He had executive and management responsibilities in Massachusetts, Texas, Wyoming, Mississippi, Louisiana, Maine, Arkansas, North Dakota and Miami.

Four weeks since he was arrested for allegedly assaulting two police officers. Four weeks. And yet prosecutors are still trying to decide whether or not to formally charge him. My question is why. Why is it taking so long to review a case that seems incredibly straightforward? And I'm not the only one beginning to ask that question. Tomorrow on the steps of the courthouse, the Police Benevolent Association and the People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality, are planning a joint protest to decry what they see as a preferential treatment for Winton.
