I hope the administration and the military are not succumbing to "political correctness," otherwise known as "losing the will to win."

I'm no expert on the law of war. but I'd say a good starting point is this: if U.S. troops did it in WWII and were not punished for it, it's OK now.

Give 'em a fair trial, and if they're guilty, hang them out to dry.

If they killed a civilian without any justification (as they are alleged), they are a blot on the honor of our military. They should receive no mercy who showed no mercy.

FROM MSNBC:

WASHINGTON - The Marine Corps on Wednesday planned to charge seven Marines and one sailor with murder in connection with the April death of an Iraqi civilian, a defense official said.

At Camp Pendleton, Calif., where the eight accused service members are being held in a military brig, officials announced that a news conference would be held later Wednesday concerning the alleged killing of the Iraqi in the village of Hamdaniya. But the announcement did not mention murder or other charges.

The official who disclosed the Marine plans asked not to be identified publicly because the official announcement was still pending.

You can read the rest here 7 Marines, 1 sailor to face murder charges. Accused service members held over April 26 death of an Iraqi civilian.

America is at war. Our fighting troops should be given the benefit of the doubt under all circumstances. The 7 Marines and one sailor have ONLY been charged with breaking the code of military justice. They aren't guilty of anything. Jumping to conclusions serves no good purpose at this point.

I think this was the case where some other troops turned them in...so, it may be legitimate....unlike Haditha.

Speaking of Haditha, I heard Gen. McInerny on with Laura Ingraham a few minutes ago...and he said the Marines that supposedly participated in the Haditha incident should be let free until/unless they are charged with something...

He said he is "calling for" that to happen, so we will see.

I hope the administration and the military are not succumbing to "political correctness," otherwise known as "losing the will to win."

That already happened when it went from a military mission to a nation rebuilding/humanitarian one especially while our troops are still being shot at. Time to halt anything but a military mission in Iraq, make the no longer a military threat, declare it done, and end it. NOTE: I am not saying cut and run I am saying complete the military mission by ending Iraq's capabilities to be a threat for decades. Take out all infrastructure so their next war is fought with traditional rocks.

Given the political climate created by Murtha, is there any doubt that if the government gave anyone the benefit of the doubt, the MSM would make it an impeachable offense? I think that at this point virtually all allegations have to be brought to court when they otherwise would not have.

Some soldiers in WWII perpetrated unauthorized killings; some were punished and some weren't. I think "Saving Private Ryan" portrayed it fairly well; in the heat of battle, there's little incentive to take prisoners, even if the rules require it.

Perhaps you missed the law school lecture where they taught that killing without justification is not always murder. It runs the gamut from involutary manslaughter to first degree murder. These men have not been charged with murder, but merely with shooting a man without provocation. I suspect there are two sides to this story.

Knowing the quality of the witnesses in Iraq, I would be more than willing to give these men every benefit of the doubt. I suspect there is a lot of internal pressure from Clinton leftovers in the Pentagon that is fueling a lot of this stuff right now. The guys on the ground who are laying their lives down for us need our support, not our blanket condemnations.

And if guilty, they still deserve some measure of mercy. How many lives did these guys save before they took one (if they took one)?

By this standard, pretty much the entire chain of command in World War II, from Presidents Roosevelt and Truman on down the line, could legitimately be considered war criminals and a blot on the honor of the military who deserved to receive no mercy.

I know that we're all supposed to be brainwashed into believing that the old rules of war can't be permitted to apply today thanks to technology and everything, but I still say it's a bunch of politically correct, liberal bullcrap.

One telling thing that happened yesterday in terms of these and other accusations is the release of the report that "there was no knowing coverup" of Haditha.

Whatever else that means, it does mean that Murthas sources were wrong.

Murtha said his sources indicated THE REPORT would show there definitely was a coverup.

All we can say is that he was wrong.

IF his sources were wrong there, then one must begin to suspect his sources on other revelations they made to him.

(He was probably set up by Karl Rove....that dastard! :>)

FROM CNN:

Official: Marines, sailor to face charges in Iraqi death

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. Marine Corps on Wednesday planned to charge seven Marines and one sailor with murder in connection with the April death of an Iraqi civilian, a defense official said.

At Camp Pendleton, California, where the eight accused service members have been held in a military prison since late May, officials announced that a news conference would be held later Wednesday concerning the alleged killing of the Iraqi in the village of Hamdaniya. The announcement did not mention murder or other charges.

The official who disclosed the Marine plans asked not to be identified publicly because the official announcement was still pending.

The allegation is that Marines pulled an unarmed Iraqi man from his home on April 26 and shot him to death without provocation.

Seven Marines and one Navy corpsman from the Pendleton-based 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment were taken out of Iraq and put in the prison pending the filing of any charges against them.

I do that's who. In a U.S. criminal court you have a point in war however you don't. These men are fighting a war. War knows no innocents. That is the whole problem our POTUS, Sec of Defense, Congress, media, and others have forgotten or ignore the fact of. They prefer the kinder, gentler, wars. Well a news alert for them. There is no such thing. What would a few of the Political princes binding the hands of our troops do it was their pathetic hides getting popped over there by an enemy that wears no uniform?

You don't really like our soldiers, do you? You don't want to give them the benefit of the doubt. You don't want to know that before they may have unjustifiably killed some probable terrorist, that they saved 1000 schoolchildren by risking their lives in disarming a bomb or by raiding a bomb factory.

That's pretty sad, Jude. These guys are presumed innocent. I also suspect that these guys did not willy nilly just pick their victim out and shoot him for no reason. I suspect they had a reason to single him out and that perhaps someone got carried away. That, at worst, is voluntary manslaugter and not murder. So far all we have is the MSN telling us these guys are cold blooded murderers. Tokyo Rose was more honest with the American people than the MSN is now.
