I'm sure you are correct. Did you see the documentary I'm referring to and did they address what you've said above to your satisfaction? Or, did they simply ignore that basic fact?

I'm on the fence over the whole incident. In particular, if it was a terrorist attack, why did no one claim responsibility?
I've forgotten the date, but there was a similar crash at the Pittsburgh airport. Some of my technical friends were called in because the damage appeared caused by a SAM.

The fact that the CIA was involved in this investigation at all was a real tip-off for me. The CIA doesn't investigate "normal" airline disasters. Nor does the FBI, for that matter -- at least not to the extent that they were involved in this one.
I distinctly recall driving home right after dark that night and hearing the 1st announcement on WCBS (in NYC, for those that dont know)that TWA Flight 800 had been 'hit by a missle'.
A few minutes later several patrons of a restaurant nearby (with large windows) were interviewed as to what they saw.
They said that they saw a MISSLE hit the plane.
Mass psychosis? I have actually heard the term used to describe what these folks saw that evening.
How do you know someone didn't?

The reason is simple: did the investigators find the blast pattern and remains of a MANPAD warhead anywhere on the plane? Given that each type of MANPAD has a distinct warhead detonation pattern (whether it's Stinger, SA-7, SA-18, Blowpipe, etc.), the fact that NONE of these blast patterns--let alone the explosive residue from the warhead itself--was found on the remains of TWA 800 rules out a missile attack.
My adult son and I were watching TV and saw that clip. Once. They also interviewed eyewitnesses........once.There were huge groups of people milling around in shock. Local NY news teams were on the ground quickly but suddenly the story changed. Because of the coverage I saw right after the incident, I have always been convinced Flight 800 was shot down.
OK, I accept that, but it seems to me you are spliting hairs. So your take is one heck of a lot of people saw a streak that went from the ground (ocean) to the plane, then the plance crashed.

Have you read Nelson Demille's book Night Fall? Reading your post about the TV footage reminded me of a part from his book. I know he wrote it as fiction, but it is a good read on this subject.
I saw an investigative report on this and James Kallstrom was a big part of it. He seemed openly honest and genuine. He seemed like he went the extra mile to check into many different explosion theories especially the missile theory. I think he is as frustrated as the rest as to why we still don't definitively what happened.

Actually local NY news outlets had the story right in the first hours after the incident. The home movie of the missile disappeared soon as did the witnesses.
