June 25, 2006 -- A Brooklyn anesthesiologist callously ditched his wife and three kids, leaving them homeless after he secretly sold their house and fled the country with all their money, the wife alleges. Dr. Raihan Chowdhury was deemed a fugitive Wednesday for ignoring repeated court orders to provide for his hapless family.

His wife, Sharmin Sultana, who gave up her career as a gynecologist to become a full-time mom, is now broke and staying at a women's shelter with the couple's two daughters and toddler son.

All while her husband lives in luxury in his native Bangladesh, possibly having remarried without getting a divorce here, according to her divorce documents and her lawyer's statements in Brooklyn Family Court.

Boy, when she gives up a career, she doesn't mess around.

You have to read the whole article. Once in Bangladesh, he wanted them to stay with him. NOW, I'm not saying that this is sleazy and horrible, but it's not like he just upped and abandoned her. She made the choice to come back to the United States. She could have been living in the lap of luxury with her husband in Bangladesh. It's cultural. She married him without knowing him...why would it be outrageous for him to be making all the decisions without including her in the decision making. Seems she's the one caught between the two cultures.

This could be a trend happening in their culture. I heard of a cab driver from India, who married an American woman, he told numerous people we knew that when his youngest daughter was 16, he was leaving his family taking all their assets, and marrying a 15 year old girl in his home country. Isn't muticulturalism beautiful...

uh might not have been. these are not long standing Americans, they are recent immigrants, and their culture is NOT THE SAME... I know of a lot of marriages where the wife is not owner of the home, but rather HIS mother is the co-owner of the property and will stand by her son no matter what...

She has no license in the United States to practice medicine and would need months to study and take the board exams to secure one.

Months? How terrible.

Also, where in the article does it say they are Muslim?

I don't believe that. You mean to say it's against the law for a man to buy a house without his wife's signature or the other way round?

an unemployed gynecologist. stay at home mom.
dad had all the $$$'s, this is a different culture than we are used to.

She ought to update her license, and get to work and forget about the well, whatever he is.

He ain't worth the effort it takes to have.

Our nation does not protect stay at home moms, they don't look at their work as worthwhile, thanks to women like Gloria Steinem.

Not to buy, but to sell, if it's the family home. It has to be in one of the spouses' names though to qualify for this protection.

Or Minnesota. Even if one spouse has the deed and owned the property before the marraige, you can't sell without both spouses appearing at the closing with picture ID's and signing the documents.

It doesn't explicitly say that, but when even Mahatma Gandhi couldn't work out a way to live with møøslimbs, he divided the country into India for the Hindus, and East and West Pakistan for the møøselimbs.

East Pakistan became Bangladesh.

They're from Bangladesh.

actually... I know someone that happened to in clearwater. her husband got a 2nd mortgage without telling her... and yes, both on the deed, and then defaulted on the 2nd mortgage. lender pushed it into foreclosure and my friend was forced to leave her house. technically, the lender should never have given the loan with only one signature, but with a million dollar home, she didn't see to mind. the courts have been dragging their feet and she has lost all her savings trying to deal with it. by dragging their feet, i mean over 1 year. the husband has been ignoring the courts, and the courts don't seem to mind.

In Oklahoma it is joint property even if the other spouse is not on the deed -- in fact here at closing the spouse is added to the deed even if they are not on the mortgage.

I know I'm not supposed to talk to you, but this is just too much. I read the whole article and the choice that hubby gave this woman was life in the U.S. or "a life of luxury" in a hellhole. Which amounts to what? A three room mud hut with two chamber pots?

Also, did you skip the part where he threatened to keep the kids and "send her packing", and when she looked in her purse, discovered that her husband had taken the money, passports, and credit cards? So what you are saying is that this is a sound form of "outrageous decision making".

I try not to get too worked up over the bitter divorced guys here, and there are a couple on this thread. I was 19 yrs. old when my first husband abandoned me and my two babies. Moaning and groaning about it would be so low class. I got a job and a new life. I almost got a bed in a shelter, too.
Another woman in the same situation helped me and I didn't have to suffer that humiliation. And that's just what it is...guys get to be drunks in bars, crying in their beer, and jilted wives get a bunk in a feminist prison camp with the frightened screeching babies.

Very simply, there is right and there is wrong. If you can point out one single thing that this man did right, I will depart the field. Use any standard you want. What good or right or decent or fair thing did this man do for his wife and three small children?

p.s. Not to get personal, but are you a divorced man who got left with nothing? Because if you are, then at least we have that in common.
