Bush slams leak of terror finance story

President Bush on Monday sharply condemned the disclosure of a secret anti-terrorism program that taps into an immense international database of confidential financial records. "The disclosure of this program is disgraceful," he said.

"For people to leak that program and for a newspaper to publish it does great harm to the United States of America," Bush said. He said the disclosure of the program "makes it harder to win this war on terror."

The program has been going on since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. It was disclosed last week by several news organizations.

Using broad government subpoenas, the program allows U.S. counterterrorism analysts to obtain financial information from a vast database maintained by a company based in Belgium. It routes about 11 million financial transactions daily among 7,800 banks and other financial institutions in 200 countries.

"Congress was briefed and what we did was fully authorized under the law," Bush said, talking with reporters in the Roosevelt Room after meeting with groups that support U.S. troops in Iraq.

Excellent. It is time to do something about the treasonous liberal media and make a lesson to all of them by going after the head of Hate and Treason, the New York Times.

Worth repeating:

This program can also be used to screen for drug dealing, illegal political contributions, money laundering, large real estate purchases, large stock transactions, other large financial transactions, legal political contributions, tobacco purchases, etc.

I believe the NYT is just itching for the federal government to come after them.

The old adage "there is no such thing as bad publicity..."fits here.

Thousands of people in the US and Europe knew about this policy. To even frog march the government leaker would prove fruitless.

No sir. Just having the administration publicly denounce it should be enough. The NYT is a dying paper anyway. It's not even the #1 daily in NYC.

Just an opinion....of course.

The U.S. government had better use more than words to stop this. The NYT has declared war on the citizens of the United States. They will print any thing they can get their hands on that will damage the United States prosecution of war on Islamic terrorist. They have decided that they will be on the side of the head choppers.

Until the President tells the AG to prosecute, this is little more than political grandstanding.

OTOH, if he means what he says, the AG will prosecute. That's the measure, IMO.

One step at a time, Laz.

Bush traditionally comes out with this type of statement even as the DoJ or other appropriate authority is working behind the scenes to satisfy your, and my, and every other outraged, citizen's great desire to prosecute this type of activity and keep the offending party within the law.

I heard about this program chatting with friend who works at a bank. He told me about it 9 months ago. It's been operational for a couple years. The software was created by a fellow out of Hong Kong. It triangulates everything about a person. The days of signing over a check for cash and thinking it's okay for omission from your taxable income should be coming to a close. It looks at signatures, everything. I thought it was created to catch underground economy tax cheats but apparently it has other uses :).

He said the disclosure of the program "makes it harder to win this war on terror."

And that's exactly why they disclosed it. Deeds such as these should be proof that editors from papers such as the NYT must be either loony or perhaps demon-possessed. I don't understand how hyper-liberals perceive they would fare better under Sharia law than they do now. Truly, these folks are sick in the head. Do they have half a clue on what would happen to their rather fast-and-loose lifestyle and worldview should they succede in handing America over to it's enemies? Are they seriously expecting they'll be continuing to be attending their "Diversity Days" parades? Do they seriously expect that our would-be new overlords will contribute to the ACLU? What on earth do they expect or want as the outcome of their treasonous actions?

Rather than prosecute this and let the left once again spin things to their advantage ("FREEDOM OF PRESS!" etc.), I'd much rather wage a public campaign by the Administration whereby they constantly and forcefully rebuke the NY Times for this and hopefully allow it to become conventional wisdom with the general public that the MSM is not on our side.

I've  often had thoughts that the NYTimes might be deliberately trying to prod the Bush Justice Department into legal action against them.

This link  NY Times pushing to be charged? UPDATED at the Anchoress site directs you to a site that states an opinion on that possibility:
