Congressman Apologizes for Remark Insulting Helen Thomas

An Iowa congressman has apologized for disparaging comments he made about a veteran White House correspondent. Republican Steve King was discussing the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Saturday at the state Republican convention when he mentioned 85-year-old Helen Thomas.

King said about Zarqawi, "There probably are not 72 virgins in the hell he's at." He went on to say, "And if there are, they probably all look like Helen Thomas."

A spokeswoman for the two-term congressman says in an e-mail that King has apologized to Thomas.

Thomas has covered the White House for nearly 50 years. She's currently a columnist for Hearst Newspapers.

King is running for re-election this fall. His Democratic opponent calls his remarks uncivil.

Apparently, without a hint of irony, Thomas has named her new book "Watchdogs of Democracy?" with a subtitle of how the press are failing to destroy republican presidencies. Does she realize its not a good idea to have any of her book titles include the word dog?

I don't know about watchdog, but in her case, all I can say is Arrrf! And I'm not just being mean about her physical appearance. I heard her on NPR (yes, I myself and listen to the enemy sometimes) and she was just as vicious as you can imagine, like a junkyard dog. Sort of James Carville all wrinkled up in a dress.
