CHARLES CITY — As the first anniversary of her disappearance nears, investigators in the Evelyn Miller murder case say they continue to check all leads and remain optimistic that they will find the person responsible for the death of the 5-year-old Floyd County girl.

Floyd County and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation representatives updated the media on the case during a news conference Tuesday.

Floyd County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer said Floyd County Sheriff’s Department and DCI agents work on the case on a daily basis.

“We hold regular meetings to share information and review the case,” Dettmer said. “We have been and remain very active. New leads are being pursued.”

Dettmer, Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch and DCI Director Eugene Meyer declined to release any specifics or new information, saying they will continue to protect the integrity of the case. All three said they remain optimistic the case will be solved.

Dettmer declined to answer specific questions about who might be on the suspect list, if investigators believe there was more than one person involved, if people have been dismissed as suspects or if an arrest would come soon.

“Throughout the case, I’ve repeated that I’m not going to give you a timeline,” she told reporters.

Dettmer said the early stages of the case were critical. She said officials had to focus on conducting a missing person case and the early stages of the murder investigation may have been hampered.

She said recent leads have been similar to previously reported events.

Meyer urged people who know anything about the case to come forward.

“Sometimes people think the things they saw, or know, are insignificant,” Meyer said. “That’s not the case. Everything is important and we urge them to contact law enforcement.”

Lynch told reporters that at least one and sometimes two officers from his department work on the case full time.

“Even after the shift ends and we go home, we’re thinking about this,” he said. “It is something you think about constantly.”

Miller was reported missing from her rural Floyd County home on July 1, 2005.

An intense search, involving thousands of North Iowa volunteers, started in the Floyd area and her body was discovered five days later in the Cedar River near Charles City.

MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANNED

A candlelight service will be held in Floyd on Sunday, observing the the anniversary of Evelyn Miller’s death.

The service will begin at 8 p.m. at Evelyn’s memorial statue in the park next to the Floyd Community Center.

The public is invited to participate and to remember the 5-year-old who disappeared on July 1, 2005.

Family members say they would like to thank those who participated in the search efforts and law enforcement officers who have also spent thousands of hours on the case.

Many members of Evelyn’s family are planning to attend. Candles will be available and will be lighted at dusk.

SPECIAL REPORT PLANNED

The Globe Gazette plans special coverage of the Evelyn Miller case on Saturday, first anniversary of the day she disappeared.

The report will include the latest from family members and law enforcement agencies dealing with the investigation of the death of the 5-year-old girl from Floyd.

Also included will be a look back at the tragedy and discussion of how family members are dealing with their loss and how law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case.
