AP) IRVINE, Calif. The mayor of Irvine apologized this week to Taiwanese officials after a city staffer signed an agreement with China last month formally disavowing the existence of the island nation.
The sister-city agreement, signed in late May, includes promises not to send official city delegations to Taiwan, not to fly the Taiwanese flag and not to play the Taiwanese national anthem or attend National Day celebrations, among other things.
Irvine Mayor Beth Krom said she signed a routine sister-city agreement at an official ceremony in China and was unaware another employee had signed a memorandum that contained the hot-button language. Krom says the employee, who was new to her position, had no authority to sign the document and it is not binding for the city.
OK!
Now let's get the United States of America's government to apologize and stop disavowing the exisitence of the island nation.
President Bush, visit Taiwan as part of your show of support for free democratic allies.
The employee must have been a commie lib. :)
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Bush to visit Taiwan while he's still in office.
What a bunch of crap. The fact that China tries to shove this garbage down everyone's throat every chance they get, to the point of including it in a non-binding, nothing but politics, feel good, "sister city" agreement is complete nonsense. The mayor should politely tell them that if they can't remove the langugage, then the "sister city" arrangement is off.
The POS that signed such a statement need to be fired.
Zhendema?
Bummer. I thought he'd go tomorrow.
I was in Taiwan just recently and the people there love Americans. You can't say that in too many countries now days. It makes me sick the American politics use Taiwan like a political football. These people are hard working capitalists and want to be our best friend. What a shame.
Or maybe just easily cowed.
More evidence of incompetent lefty leadership within the People's Republic of California. Barf.....
Moooo
All this nonsense with stop out in California when someone clues them in that China is as much capitalist as communist these days.
