FReeper Canteen~World War II Pinups~June 28, 2006

Posted on 06/28/2006 6:04:10 PM PDT by fatima

World War II PINUPS
The most famous of all? Check out Betty Grable. War movie buffs will remember actor Robert Strauss (playing "Animal") in Stalag 17, professing undying love for a tattered picture of Betty. Or the scene in Patton when "Ole Blood 'n Guts" (played by George C. Scott) tears a pinup off a wall with his riding crop during an inspection. Whether tacked on a barracks wall in some dreary camp in Britain, folded into a tiny square inside a wallet that crossed European and Pacific battlefields, or merely secreted away as a prized possession in a POW camp, pinups afforded the GI a glimpse of American (and, yes, English) beauty, however remote, wherever they were. Even the German at the radar site in Saving Private Ryan, in his litany of Americanisms, utters "Betty Grable ...great gams. The Barracks Wall

Not just any picture of Betty, but this picture , was probably the number one pinup of World War II. This image was reproduced on the noses of hundreds of bombers, and tens of thousands of Airmen, sailors, GIs, and marines, far from home, listened to American songs broadcast by Tokyo Rose, and gazed wistfully at her million-dollar gams.

Many people pitched in to do their job during World War II. Among them were entertainers like Bob Hope, who traveled to military bases and outposts bringing laughter, an entertainment troop, and at least one beautiful girl. His reason? To raise the morale of the boys fighting for their country. Hope had the right idea. Lana Turner, known as the "sweater girl," was one of the beautiful women who sometimes accompanied Hope--and brought hope. But it wasn't every day that the enlisted men could get this type of entertainment from Hope or other entertainers, such as Glen Miller, whose popular wartime song, "Peggy, the Pin-Up Girl," explained why these beautiful women were important to the morale of the GIs. According to a well-publicized wartime survey, the top five favorite pin-up girls of World War II included actresses Dorothy Lamour ("the Sarong girl") and Jane Russell. The legs of Betty Grable, the undisputed queen of the wartime pin-up girls, were insured through Lloyd's of London for more than $1 million. The other two were Lana Turner, who was discovered in Schwab's Drugstore on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, and Rita Hayworth. Airport Journal

The mention of Bob Hope reminds me of one of my favorite scenes from Laugh In where the guest star,Hope, stood next to Artie Johnson's German soldier character and Artie says to Hope in that German accent of his.."every Christmas I waited for you".

Warnings In The Word

READ: Proverbs 13:1-14

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death. —Proverbs 13:14

Swans frequently visit Mill Pond, England, where RBC Regional Director Howard Liverance lives. He writes, “It’s a beautiful place . . . where ducks, geese, and other waterfowl frolic playfully.” Yet even in this idyllic setting there has been danger. Across one corner of the pond are some power lines. A number of swans have been killed because they didn’t see them as they approached the pond.

Howard talked with some people about this problem, and eventually the power company installed red flags on the lines. Now the swans can see the danger and avoid it. Since the red flags were installed, not a single swan has died.

God has provided some “red flags” for our protection. The book of Proverbs is filled with warnings about evil and encourages us to seek wisdom. In Proverbs 13:1-14, we find several red flags, including:

The Word of God “is a fountain of life, to turn [us] away from the snares of death” (v.14). Anne Cetas

God’s warnings are to protect us, not to punish us.

She may look flat at first glance. Study closely and you will see that the height combined with her lithe figure hides a healthy set of mammary galnds.

Not as big as my wife's but big enough.

Not just any picture of Betty...

And she was preggers with Harry James' baby on that photo (hence the angle from behind).

I loved women of that era. They looked like women (at the risk of getting flamed - Ann Coulter in the above post does not have enough / any curves to be in the WW2 pinup league.

No. 1 of the Vietnam war was Mary Tyler Moore (all legs...)
