KENNER, La. (AP) - Three people convicted of hauling away liquor, wine and beer from a grocery store after Hurricane Katrina were sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison.
The judge said he wanted to send a message that looting would not be tolerated when he gave the maximum sentence to Coralnelle Little, 36, Rhonda McGowen, 42, and Paul C. Pearson, 36, all of Kenner.

looting to survive is not nearly the same as looting beer and televisions.
however, FIFTEEN YEARS? most murderers don't get 15 years.
3-6 months would be a HECK of a lesson. 15 years will ruin their lives.

Nobody had to loot to survive - there were emergency food and water supplies very quickly after the storm cleared. In times of disatser, the crime carries a lot more weight because everyone is concerned about well-being and those who go lawless become a greater threat. That's why it is legal to kill looters during such times. We had signs up declaring we would shoot looters and the law enforcement folks had no problem with it. When you compare 15 years to death, 15 years seems very equitable.
Do yourself a favor and stay out of distaster areas. if you get a mild hunger pang and decide it's OK to take what isn't yours just because you would like it, it might get you killed.

15 years will ruin their lives. Boo freakin' hoo. These thugs weren't looting to survive, they were stealing booze from someones store. That store was probably the owners livihood and it's no different than them taking money out of the store owners bank account. They should have been shot on sight. Natural disasters do not give anyone the right to steal.
This reminds me of a story an attorney friend of mine related to me a few days ago. He represented an illegal alien Pro Bono in a simple theft case where the illegal was caught stealing from a grocery store. My friend argued to the DA that the charges should be dropped because the guy was stealing food, balogna and bread, to feed himself. The DA said he would agree to drop the charges had the 'perp not also stolen a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of wine on the way out the door.
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time......

I agree. Lets see a judge make an example of a child molester instead.

looting to survive is not nearly the same as looting beer and televisions. I fail to see the disassociation of survival and beer.
Did you mean to write "looting for beer and to survive is not nearly the same as looting televisions?

I was flipping channels on the radio, and Eric Michael Dyson was talking about how they were trying to provide for their families. NOW I know what really happened. Part of the reason for the problems after Katrina was people weren't going to leave their homes, as they were afraid of looters. This is good.
