To: Tolerance Sucks Rocks
From what I've heard, a 2 cent rise in the gas tax would bring as much money as the tolls. Doesn't sound like much money but, I haven't done the math. Anyone one else heard that?

Don't know for sure. But Texas has a state tax rate of 20 cents a gallon so a 2 cent increase would be 10%. In 05 the income from motor fuel tax was almost 3 billion so a 10% increase would be some 300 million more. I'm not sure that would fund the type roads that are being comptemplated or at least not in the same time frame. Texas has some 75,000+ plus miles of roadways to maintain in addition to the other expenses incurred by the DOT. Under this proposed plan the investments are made by private companies rather than the state and tax payers.
