America Continues Battle Against Terror in Middle East

By Tech. Sgt. Elaine Wilson, USAF
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2006 – The international community is committed to putting a swift end to the violence and suffering in Lebanon and Israel and moving the region toward a "lasting peace," President Bush said yesterday in his weekly radio address to the nation.

"In Lebanon, we will stand with the democratic government in its efforts to rid the country of terrorists and foreign influence and bring about a better life for the Lebanese people," Bush said.

Bush said world leaders are building a strategy to end the violence that started July 12, when members of the Hezbollah militia kidnapped two Israeli soldiers. The kidnapping touched off a series of violent attacks in Israel and Lebanon.

To achieve peace, first "militias in Lebanon must be disarmed; the flow of illegal arms must be halted; and the Lebanese security forces should deploy throughout the country," Bush said. He added that a robust multinational force also must be deployed to Lebanon.

"An effective multinational force will help speed delivery of humanitarian relief, facilitate the return of displaced persons, and support the Lebanese government as it asserts full sovereignty over its territory and guards its borders," he said.

Additionally, Iran must end its support of groups like Hezbollah, and "Syria must end its support for terrorism and respect Lebanon's sovereignty," Bush said.

While the crisis has captured the world's attention, Bush said, the situation represents a "broader struggle between freedom and terror that is unfolding across the region."

For decades, America has sought to promote stability in the region. However, the lack of freedom in the Middle East has created an atmosphere of anger and resentment, where radicalism thrives and terrorists find willing recruits, Bush said.

"We saw the consequences on Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists brought death and destruction to our country, killing nearly 3,000 innocent Americans," he said.

The experience made it clear that the only way to secure the nation's security would be to "change the course of the Middle East by fighting the ideology of terror and spreading the hope of freedom," Bush said.

America's "forward strategy for freedom" has transformed millions of lives for the better in the Middle East, he said. "From Kabul (Afghanistan) to Baghdad, to Beirut (Lebanon) and beyond, we've seen the birth of democratic governments that are striving to serve their people, reject terror and work for peace."

At the same time, "we're also seeing those who oppose democracy fighting its progress with all the destructive power they can muster," Bush said.

"We see this in Hezbollah's attacks on Israel, in the suicide bombings that kill innocent Iraqis, and in al Qaeda's campaign of terror across the world."

While there will be setbacks, Bush said, the enemies of freedom will ultimately fail. "They will fail because courageous leaders in the region have stepped forward to defend freedom and set the Middle East on a better course," he said. "And they will fail because millions of people who have suffered decades of oppression and violence will choose to live in peace with their neighbors."

President Bush said America will continue to battle for peace and democracy in the Middle East, whether in Iraq, Lebanon or the Palestinian Territories.

"This moment of conflict in the Middle East is painful and tragic," Bush said. "Transforming countries that have suffered decades of tyranny and violence is difficult, and it will take time to achieve. But the consequences will be profound -- for our country and the world.

"When the Middle East grows in liberty and democracy, it will also grow in peace, and that will make America and all free nations more secure."

Afghan, Coalition Forces Repel Extremist Ambush

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2006 – The Afghan National Army and coalition forces killed 20 Taliban extremists yesterday after the enemy fighters attempted an ambush from a compound in the Shahidi Hass district of Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province.

The combined force repelled the Taliban’s small-arms and rocket-propelled-grenade fire, killing the extremists.

There were no reported injuries to Afghan civilians, Afghan soldiers or coalition forces.

“Afghan and coalition forces will continue to destroy the enemies of Afghanistan who attempt to operate in Uruzgan province,” Army Col. Thomas Collins, a coalition spokesman, said. “Through our relentless pursuit, we will eliminate extremism and those who attempt to terrorize this country.”

In other news from Afghanistan, a Combined Joint Task Force 76 investigation found no evidence of coalition involvement in the reported attack on an Afghan parliament member’s family July 5.

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin Freakley, the task force commander, approved the official investigation, which concerned an allegation that coalition forces fired on, killed and injured the family.

Afghan parliament member Abdul Khaliq had accused coalition forces of attacking a civilian vehicle carrying members of his family. The investigation determined that coalition forces were not operating in the area on that day, U.S. officials said.

Why aren't George W. Bush, John McCain, Ted Kennedy and the other open border lovers out there picking up the trash that their "family-oriented" friends are leaving in our country?

Why isn't anyone sending Vicente Fox bills for the billions of dollars that we're forced to spend on his outcasts? The bill should be marked "LONG OVERDUE - PAY NOW"!

Bush will send that bill when hell freezes over - he wouldn't want to offend his buddy Vicente, but he sure doesn't mind offending American taxpayers.

We need more than a fence - we need a President who will enforce the existing laws, and if he can't or won't, he should step down and make way for someone who will. This mess has gone too far!

Soldiers Kill Suspected Terrorist, Detain Others

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2006 – A suspected terrorist brandishing an AK-47 rifle died July 28 in Hillah, Iraq, during a confrontation in front of the Imam Ali Mosque.

A combined patrol on a routine patrol through Hillah saw three armed men standing outside the mosque. After telling them they could not carry weapons, the patrol left the area.

The patrol members returned about 15 minutes later to find the three armed men still in front of the mosque. As the patrol approached, the men ran into the mosque. One of the men ran back out with an AK-47 and pointed it at the patrol.

The unit fired on the man with the rifle, killing him. The patrol was then engaged by small-arms fire from the mosque and surrounding buildings. They broke contact, left the area and reported the incident to the Hillah police.

In other news, a tip from concerned Iraqi citizens near Lutifiyah provided Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers with the information they needed to detain 25 people suspected of being involved in a marketplace attack in Mahmudiyah last week.

Elements of 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, teamed up with Iraqi police from Iskandariyah to pursue the suspects July 28. The tip focused the search at the Al Rahman Mosque, in Lutifiyah.

As the congregation departed the mosque after prayer, 25 adult males were detained. Five of the detainees are terrorist suspects connected with bomb-making cells in the area.

Elsewhere, a unit from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, conducted a cordon-and-search operation north of Baghdad July 28. Two suspected terrorists were detained in the operation.

All good and legitimate questions though.
Remember, so far only 1% has been picked up.

Venezuela threatens to cut oil exports to US
dnaindia ^ | July 30, 2006 | July 30, 2006

Posted on 07/30/2006 5:04:02 PM PDT by Flavius

TEHRAN: Venezuelan Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez on Sunday repeated a threat to halt oil exports to the United States if Washington continues its "hostile policies" towards Caracas.

"Our policy is transparent. If the US wants to carry out hostile policies against us, we stop oil exports to this country," Ramirez was quoted as saying by the official Iranian news agency IRNA after a meeting with his Iranian counterpart in Tehran.

"We can not steadily export oil to the US and be steadily subject to its hostility. Some actions should be taken against this situation," said the minister, who is accompanying President Hugo Chavez on a visit to the fellow anti-American state.

Ramirez has also blamed US policies in Iraq and against Iran and other oil exporters for high oil prices of above $70 per barrel.

"The situation in Iraq is awful. The hostile US reaction against Iran and some oil producers and exporters is the reason why oil prices have reached the current level."

"Tensions 'trigger' synagogue attack"
The Courier Mail ^ | July 31, 2006 | AAP

Posted on 07/30/2006 8:20:39 PM PDT by NinoFan

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ANGER over the Middle East conflict and the spiralling civilian death toll in Lebanon might have triggered an attack on a Sydney synagogue, a rabbi said today. Rabbi Wernick and his young family were inside a house attached to a synagogue in Mason Street at Parramatta when it was attacked about 9pm (AEST) last night.

Projectiles were hurled at the roof of the synagogue, and blocks of concrete were thrown at two cars, smashing windows.

Shortly after the incident witnesses told police they saw a group of about 10 Middle Eastern men laughing and running down a nearby street.

Rabbi Wernick said the attack on the synagogue, which was firebombed a few years ago, lasted about 30 seconds.

He said the conflict between Israel and Lebanon might have been a trigger for the attack, a possibility that was upsetting.

"It is always in the back of your mind, but on the one hand you don't really think that something that is happening in Lebanon will effect a synagogue in Parramatta," the 32-year-old rabbi said.

"I don't see how people could link something that is going on on the other side of the world to a small family synagogue ...

"I feel a little sorry for them, that they think that is an appropriate action."

Rabbi Wernick said he would consider beefing up his own home security."

Bomb hits Turk ruling party site, no one hurt-agency
DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, July 30 (Reuters) - A bomb exploded outside an office of Turkey's ruling AK Party on Sunday, state news agency Anatolian reported, hours after a child was killed stepping on a landmine in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

The percussion bomb shattered windows at the Justice and Development Party (AKP) site in the southeastern city of Gaziantep but the office was closed and no one was killed or injured, Anatolian said.

Local police could not confirm the report and no one at the party was available to comment.

The bombing was the latest of three attacks this month on ruling party offices and comes amid an escalation of violence in the southeast between Turkish troops and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas.

On Sunday security forces launched a new operation against PKK militants in the mountainous province of Bingol after a child was killed by a landmine there, security officials said.

Three other children, who were gathering hay, were also injured in the blast, which followed a fatal mine attack on a village guard government militiaman on Saturday.

Dozens of soldiers have been killed this year -- with as many as 16 killed in one week in July -- prompting Ankara to reiterate it could enter northern Iraq in pursuit of thousands of PKK militants it says are based there.

It blames the group for more than 30,000 deaths since the start of its campaign for a homeland in 1984.

"Based on a Big Lie, the UN Condemns the US for Executing Murderers"
July 30, 2006
Vox Populi, Jim Kouri
by Jim Kouri, CPP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "With terrorists indiscriminately killing civilians throughout the world, Muslims committing genocide in Africa, and a legitimate government being overthrown in Somalia, the United Nations has truly stepped up to the plate and condemned … the United States.

The US government should suspend all death sentences, a United Nations human rights committee announced on Friday. The supposedly unbiased group based its citation on the fact that capital punishment appears to be disproportionately imposed on minority groups and poor people, which most studies show is The Big Lie about the death penalty.

The US “should place a moratorium on capital sentences, bearing in mind the desirability of abolishing death penalty,” the UN Human Rights Committee said in a 12-page release of findings on US compliance with a 40-year-old treaty on civil and political rights.

The statement was issued in response to the report, but did not specifically address the committee’s proposals concerning capital punishment. Also, the group did not disclose which studies on the death penalty and race they utilized to come to their conclusions

The panel consisted of a group of 18 independent “experts” who reviewed the practices of the 156 countries that have sanctioned the treaty. However, it regretted that the US had not indicated if it has taken steps to review federal and state legislation “with a view to assessing whether offenses carrying the death penalty are restricted to the most serious crimes.”

The United States only imposes capital punishment on killers convicted of first-degree — premeditated — murder. And then only those displaying a depraved indifference to human life are sentenced to the ultimate punishment."

"New Orleans Police Investigate 6 Fatal Shootings in 24 Hours"

Updated: July 30th, 2006 09:44 AM EDT
By MARY FOSTER
Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Police were investigating six fatal shootings that occurred within 24 hours, the latest round of killings as the city struggles to rein in violence that has shadowed the recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Three brothers and a friend were killed in a neighborhood not far from the French Quarter, and two other people were gunned down in separate incidents hours later, authorities said Saturday.

Last month, Gov. Kathleen Blanco sent the Louisiana National Guard and state police to New Orleans after five teenagers were shot to death in a single attack.

Such sensational slayings have a crippling effect on the city's struggle to rebuild its tourism industry and persuade evacuees to return, said city councilman James Carter, who heads the council's committee on crime."

"Iran awards highest medal of honor to Chavez"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Iran awarded Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Sunday the country's highest medal of honor for his support for Iran's nuclear program, the official IRNA new agency reported.

"The medal was given to President Chavez for his support for Iran's stance on its nuclear case at international circles, especially Venezuela's vote against an anti-Iranian resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," the IRNA said.

Venezuela opposed an IAEA decision to report Iran's nuclear case to the UN Security Council in February.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad awarded the medal to Chavez in Tehran University.

"He is the one who has stood against imperialism for years and has defended the interests of his and other Latin American countries," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying by the state television.

Chavez arrived in Tehran on Saturday for his fifth visit to the Islamic republic since he came to power in 1999."

Hizballah fighter's sister: “We thank God almighty for making us the family of a martyr”

"Americans love Pepsi Cola; we love death" Alert from Reuters: "Zest for martyrdom fuels Hezbollah in battle"

BEIRUT - A sister of Hezbollah fighter Mustafa Zalzali wears mourning black for her brother, but his death in battle with Israel elicits more pride than grief.

“We thank God almighty for making us the family of a martyr,” she said. “We received the news of his martyrdom with pride,” she told Hezbollah’s al-Manar television.
[...]
The family of Zalzali, killed in a recent battle, say they are ready for more sacrifices.
“His martyrdom has lifted our heads high,” said another of his sisters. “Whatever more we can offer, we will. Our men, our children, our siblings."

"Spies may have stolen U.S. bioweapons"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "FORT DETRICK, Md., July 30 (UPI) -- Soviet spies may have stolen deadly viruses from a U.S. biodefense laboratory in Maryland in the 1980s and shipped them to Moscow, a report says.

A U.S. arms control expert says he has independent evidence of a Soviet spy at Fort Detrick 20 years ago, The Baltimore Sun reported, and a former Soviet scientist says his laboratory routinely received dangerous pathogens and other materials from Western labs through clandestine channels.

The allegations, while not definitive, raise questions about whether the United States' huge $7-billion-a-year biological defense effort at Fort Detrick will increase the odds of bioterrorism -- by generating dangerous new microbes and scientific knowledge that could be diverted or stolen, the newspaper said."

"Hamas, Hezbollah don't make Russia's terrorist list"

July 30, 2006

BY HENRY MEYER

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MOSCOW -- Russia on Friday published a list of 17 groups it regards as terrorist organizations, but did not include the Palestinian militant movement Hamas or Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrilla group, both regarded as terrorists in Washington.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Hezbollah must have a say in any agreements in the Middle East crisis, Russian news agencies reported -- another sign of differences between Russia and the United States about the region.

The terrorist list, published in the official daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta, included al-Qaida and the Taliban."
