The Power of Hillary [Mega Barf Alert!]
Washington Post ^ | 7/2/06 | James Carville and Mark J. Penn

Posted on 07/02/2006 2:55:34 AM PDT by Oshkalaboomboom

"Hillary Clinton really is one of the weakest . . . nominees with whom the Democrats could be saddled."

"Democrats are worried sick about her chances."

"Just give someone else a chance, so we in the Democratic Party can elect a Democrat."

"She cannot possibly, possibly win."

Yada, yada, yada.

We've heard all this "Hillary can't win stuff" before. In fact, the quotes above aren't from recent weeks but from six years ago, when many pundits -- and Democrats -- said there was no way that Hillary could get elected to the Senate. She won by 12 percentage points.

We don't know if Hillary is going to run for president, but as advisers who have worked on the only two successful Democratic presidential campaigns in the past couple of decades, we know that if she does run, she can win that race, too.

Why? First, because strength matters. Our problems as a party are less ideological than anatomical: Our candidates have been made to look like they have no backbone. But the latest Post-ABC News poll shows that 68 percent of Americans describe Hillary Clinton as a strong leader. That comes after years of her being in the national crossfire. People know that Hillary has strong convictions, even if they don't always agree with her. They also know that she's tough enough to handle the viciousness of a national campaign and the challenges of the presidency itself.

One thing we know about Clinton campaigns: Nobody gets Swift Boated.

The woman who gave the War Room its name knows how tough politics at the presidential level can be. Adversaries spent $60 million against her in 2000, and she endured press scrutiny that would have wilted most candidates. She gave as good as she got, and she triumphed.

Already the push is on to build Hillary up as a powerful candidate for the 2008 nomination. Carville must be getting tired of the guest appearance circuit he's looking for a steady meal ticket. But comparing a campaign in one of the most liberal, heavily Democratic states in the nation with a national campaign? Come on, James, you can do better than that.

You have to looh at where Hillary won. In New York.
Home of the guest Senator.

O f course the Snakehead thinks she can win. He gets paid to think that.

The love notes she gets from the press are considered "press scrutiny"?

Brilliant assessment: "Of course [James Carville], the Snakehead thinks she can win. He gets paid to think that."

Carville is comparing hips to thighs. Of course Hillary could win as Senator for New York, but she wouldn't have won in Arkansas, and he knows Democrats don't think she can win the presidency in 2008. Carville has said he won't ever work on a presidential campaign again, unless Hillary runs. He and Paul Begala are already on the record as committed to that campaign. That bogus disclaimer "don't know if she's running in 2008", just proves how dishonest Carville is.

I wish they would just put her on the ballot for once and for all. She would be womped so hard that it would finally shut people up about a Hillary presidency. No matter how much the MSM want her, even most Dems that I know can't stand her. The other benefit is the guarantee of another Republican Presidential term beginning with the 2008 election. Bring her on!

Never one to let inconvenient facts get in the way of a story, James ignores that it would not have been a "12 percentage points" story if Guiliani had stayed in the Senate race.

Nice try James trying to turn anatomy into ideology. What's next...x-rays of the beast's backbone? They might be necessary to convince her lower-life enablers.

The best strategy the right could pursue re hillary is to be silent -- until she is nominated.

But we simply cannot.
We are as weak about hillary, as paparazzi before Jolie.

she's tough vicious enough to handle the viciousness of make it tough for anyone else in a national campaign and the challenges of the presidency itself.

One thing we know about Clinton campaigns: Nobody gets Swift Boated inconvenient truths get suppressed by journalism.

It almost worked for Kerry in '04, but the SBVT campaign made the critical difference in OH. When you talk to a liberal about the Clinton Administration (I remember when I couldn't capitalize that expression) you have to get past the smoke and mirrors to get them to focus on reality. And when I say "smoke and mirrors" I do not mean to say that liberals actually think that WJC was not guilty as charged; the real illusion of WJC is "It's all irrelevant" and "Everybody does it."

WJC was in the White House with the extremely parochial and even personal agenda to "comfort the the afflicted and afflict the comfortable" (according to his lights, of course). WJC derided issues of foreign policy and national security during his campaign, and during his two terms he slashed the military budget and drastically reduced the size of the Army. His first Secretary of Defense, Les Aspin, blundered into the Black Hawk Down fiasco and, properly, accepted responsiblity for his mistake and resigned. Given the historic contempt of the Democratic Party for the military, at that point the only recourse Clinton really had was to name a Republican to be Secretary of Defense.

The reality of the Clinton Administration was that WJC thought that History was dead, and his inattention to it allowed History to climb out of its coffin.

Put the matter in historic terms. The POTUS is the head of the government, and symbolic head of the nation. As head of government, the POTUS hires the cabinet heads of the departments of

If you are going to hire people for those jobs, you should have experience hiring and supervising people for analogous jobs, and should be qualified to actually do the most critical of them. A governor has that sort of experience in domestic affairs and state law enforcement, and is therefore the most prominent credential for a POTUS.

But it is notable that in the past generation no Democrat has even served one term as Secretary of Defense with his reputation intact. And in the generation before that, there were two Democratic Secretaries of Defense - one of whom left the military in a notable shambles for the Reagan Administration to set right, and the other of whom got the casualties flowing in the Vietnam War and continued in office after he had abandoned hope of success. And the generation before that, a Democratic Secretary of Defense was utterly flat-footed when North Korea invaded the south, and got into the stalemate which led to the current impasse.

Anyone who proposes that Hillary could be an effective SecDef, or be willing and able to hire and retain a good one, is smoking something funny. And anyone who proposes that we should trust Hillary, with her friends Webb Hubble, Jamie Gorelick, et al, to head up the Justice Department . . .

The rest of the government departments are just opportunities for corruption.

I would point out that that was then, this is now. Bunchcha water's run under the bridge since then... Like the fact that she was coming off eight years of being first "lady" and was running against an unknown (Lazio).

Folks today are much more knowledgeable about The Hildabeaste and X42/rapist/perjurer. IMHO, this knowledge will make a big difference. And she won't be running against an unknown.

Flat out BS. She never answered a single question that wasn't pre-scripted. The pansy ass NY media flunkies bent over and spread 'em from the start to the finish, and Hillary's strap-on carried the day.

She has never yet faced the voters, and she won't this year, in her re-election to the Senate. In 2008 she will have to find a strategy for handling the national media if she is to win.
