It sure looks like a giant shark or killer whale looking for tasty lunch meat.:)

It's also a Typhoon, not an Akula (fast attack)

I used to hunt those Rusky subs. That is a big, noisy piece of crap like the rest of their subs, although much better than their earlier generations of subs.

Russian Captain says, "Comrade Vladimirov, are you sure this is the sub dock at Sakhalin Island?"
"There's been a slight miscalculation, Comrade Kapitan. We should've taken a LEFT turn at Poloshnik."

We used to hunt these white elephants. You didn't need acoustic detection. You could see this big bulge in the ocean going by. Real stealthy. /s

The Russian designation for the Typhoon SSBN is Akula.

Perhaps this is just the kickoff for an advertising campaign. A nice photo-op to entice potential buyers like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Having been an Army guy myself I know nothing about subs, but I always thought that the raison d' etre of a sub was to be undetectable when submerged.

That's hugh. A submarine's size is far less important than a submarine's sound.
To: sukhoi-30mki
The Russian designation for the Typhoon SSBN is Akula. Now that's confusing, since the NATO designation "Akula" is for a fast attack sub. But is nonetheless the case, Two Akulas. IIRC, Akula also means "shark" in Russian.

I hope the 'fat nazis' don't see this photo. There isn't a fat Russian to be seen anywhere. Maybe they're not allowed outside?

LOL, like with one of those metal detectors? Or with a P3 Orion Subhunter? Nothing like a nice butterfly passage of the Gibraltor straights to make your day.

Thanks back at ya'! And hats off to you, as it takes more testicular fortitude to run around on the ground diving for cover (Infantry) than floating around inputting information for firing solutions (modern naval warfare). Great homepage.

Who knows? The next Russian sub may be bigger than Khufu's Pyramid in Giza Plateau.:)

Anybody realize how far north Severodoninsk is? About 64 degrees 35 minutes. About as far north as the Bering Strait, farther north than most of Canada.
Either an exceedingly warm day, or very brave beach goers.

That's what the U.S. and NATO call a "Typhoon", an SSBN. The largest sub ever to put to sea. It's confusing. What the U.S. calls "Typoon" the Russians call "Akula". What the U.S. called "Akula" was the 971 class attack SSNs, which the Russians call "Shchuka-B".

looks like a crappy beach. As far north as it is, it's amazing there is any sand for the beach at all. I'm surprised all the people don't have visible goosebumps, even at that resolution.
