Maybe America didn't want to see a deadbeat dad Superman who stopped fighting for "the American way" after all.
A mere days after the much-hyped Bryan Singer film "Superman Returns" opened, reports are coming in that the film is struggling at the box office. In fact, Fox News reports that the box office take is dropping as word of mouth spreads about the film.
The new film had upset some Superman purists before its opening, once news surfaced that the plot of the movie had the Man of Steel learning that girlfriend Lois Lane had given birth to his illegitimate son. Others objected to news that the flick's screenwriters had insisted that the famous phrase "truth, justice and the American way" be exorcised from the story in order to avoid offending other nations.
In contrast, last year's "Batman Begins," which presented a more traditional version of that comic book hero, was a recognized hit, earning its star a "best hero" award at the recent MTV movie awards.
I used to like going to the movies.
Well, I went to see it for the eye candy. that's about all it has going for it.
The ''New Coke'' syndrome...
We prefer ''Classic''....
I truly think that only kids go to movies these days. When you see what movies make money...Adam Sandler's ridiculous CLICK made tons of money. I went to see The Lake House the other day. What a waste of time an money that was. I'd rather stay home and watch old movies any day of the week.
Clark Kent is an American citizen.
No, technically, he's an illegal alien:)
I think its a very good film, and calling him a dead beat dad is harsh. In reality its after Superman 2,You know when him and Lois got married ,he didnt know Lois was pregnant(so how could he be a dead beat) in fact he didnt know it was his son until near the end of the movie. This movie is getting a far worse rap than it deserves.
I don't intend to see this film (my brother panned it). I really did enjoy the most recent Batman outing.
LOL. A wall won't stop him. Perhaps a wall made of kryptonite.
I have developed a suspicion that all these reports of anti-Americanism and moral turpitude are part of a well-crafted whisper campaign by rival studios.
Yes, I saw the movie. No, it's not perfect. But I did find it to achieve the primary objective of any film--I was entertained. I wonder what's more fantastical--the story involving an alien who gains superpowers from the yellow Sun of the Earth, or the belief that single mothers are somehow to be scorned. Hey folks, at least Lois had the baby and didn't get an abortion.
As for Superman abandoning America, if you actually saw the movie you would know he just broadened his scope a bit.
Its too much a soap opera and not enough a violent action movie, that's the problem. People are still seeming to like it though. "The American way" may have turned off some people. The story is not that great either, although it does have some pretty good scenes. Its above average imo.
Clark was legally adopted by the Kents. Furthermore, in some Superman story I read as a kid, I remember they had mention of the fact that all the nations of the world passed laws recognizing Superman as a citizen of each, in gratitude for all the times he had saved the planet.
Doesn't Lex Luthor in the movie imitate Bush's lines? I saw that in one of the promos.
They shouldn't have given him a name. People who are neither named Clark nor Kent might be offended. They should have just stuck with Superm....uh, yeah, just 'Super' as we want to include all possible genders....but what about the Super challenged, might they too be offended???
but does he have his green card?
But at the end of the movie, after he knows its his kid, he basically just leaves him to be raised by Perry White's nephew and Lois. That's sort of deadbeat.
Snort.
The "illegal" part of "illegal alien" comes in when a person crosses the border without reporting to US officials for legal entry. I am not sure if Clark Kent crossed any borders to arrive in the US.
I also wanted to add,,,he didnt stop fighting for the American way he went on a trip to destroyed Krypton for 5 years and came back and began doing what he does best. Also its not SUperman who says "Truth, Justice, and all that stuff" its guess what? The MSM!!
Egads....Super Dead beat Dad! Like that has not been done before in Liberalville.
I agree. The effects were super.
You got that right!! watched a 1950's era movie the other day (can't recall title) and was struck by the references to the Almighty and a scene or two in which soldiers prayed. What was sad was that I was intrigued by the reference to God, as I watched it in todays world, when it was so very common in days gone by. Also, older movies were simply entertainment. No political messages, no messages at all except perhaps that there is a clear distinction between good and evil and evil has it's consequences for the evil doer.
Will Hollywood ever learn from their mistakes??
Yesterday my husband wanted to know if I wanted to go see Mission Impossible. I said no, not after what they did to Mr. Phelps. He just rolled his eyes. I asked him if he wanted to go see Superman instead. He wasn't interested. We just stayed home and watched the Astroid movie:')
I hope it bombs bigtime.
Sort of deadbeat? The kid was raised and told that Perry White's nephew was his father. Since the moment the child was born, it would have sent a worse signal IMO to see a custody battle between Lois, Superman and Perry White's Nephew(Thanks alot I cant remember his name :)
I haven't been to a movie theater in over 15 years, I refuse to pay 8 bucks to listen to liberal propaganda. What is happening to this country??????

UP UP AND AWAY!
"This movie is getting a far worse rap than it deserves."
Please explain to us how a 1980's soap opera plot makes it a movie that we should choose to see.
Recall the scene wherein he visits his son at night. The speech his gives his son is a mirror of the one his father gave to him. The speech is appropriate for Jor-El, he's dead and can't be there for Superman. It is not so appropriate for Superman to give to his son. Later in the scene, Lois asks him if he will be around- as if she should really have to ask. Superman replies blithely that he is always around- as if nothing has changed and nothing more should be expected. Sounds like a dead beat to me.
Part of the problem here is that Singer, a typical Hwood leftie, saw no difference between Jor-El, a father who gave his child to humans because he was going to die, and Superman, a father who gave his child to humans because it interferred with his work.
Actually he kissed Lois at the end of Superman 2 and she forgets it all. At the end of Superman Returns we see that he is always around, but I think he honestly realizes that the lessons he learned in Superman 2 are still on his mind and he is unsure what is best to do. Lois, I think, is only now realizing that Superman is the father. If she has no memory of that she is extremely confused. The next movie will be quite interesting I'm afraid.
I think that is the problem ... many miss going to the movies for the entertainment
My 15 yr old son is not interested because they took out "American way" and figures it's just your basic superhero plot. He will go see Pirates this weekend.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
When I read the extract in the first post, it sounds like these movie makers are deliberately trying to alienate their audience, just like the Dixie Chicks. In fact, did the Chicks sing the theme song? That would be a perfect for an, "all that stuff", deadbeat dad Superman.
The problem is not so much with which character omitted the phrase, it is that the writers of the film chose to omit the phrase and their reasons for doing so.
Even Superman couldn't stop this Iowa vacation nightmare
Travel troubles besiege two Floridians who won a trip to a movie premiere in West Des Moines.

The huge media blitz that Superman is homosexual in this movie was a stroke of genius apparently.
He came from another planet and did not apply for citizenship. Kal-L didn't even get a green card. So, he's an illegal but if he works cheap I want to hire him. I have a big yard and I hear he's a fast worker. (*I'm being sarcastic, I loved Superman as a kid. He's all American. I like images of him like the one below I found on Wikipedia)
.
Word is out: Superman Returns is virtually the same movie as the oriignal Superman movie. Same villain, same plot, same ending. It's a re-hash. People want the story to move forward.
How about Super Person so not to offend women and transgenders. ;)
Does all your movie going revolve around the idea it has to perfectly fit a narrow view of the world?
Superman fights and does whats best for humanity, even at the risk of dying from it.
Its the MSM in the Movie that removes the classic American Way, in fact you might find the MSM to be slightly negative..ie after a massive east coast blackout caused by an EMP the Daily Planet tells there reporters its not about the black-out and stuff its about Superman.
If you like to see a villain in a SUperman movie thats actually believable as a supervillain, Kevin Spacey IMO was absolutely brilliant as Lex Luthor.
Superman chooses not to break up a family unit after returning and only finding out at the end of the movie that its his son, knowing that Lois and White's nephew believed all along that it was there child not Supermans.
I could go on and on.
But I think the most important thing is leaving stupid ideology at the door when you view entertainment.
