Nearly 1,000 new state laws
TIMES-DISPATCH ^ | Jul 2, 2006 | PAMELA STALLSMITH, JEFF E. SCHAPIRO AND MICHAEL HARDY

Posted on 07/02/2006 8:41:30 PM PDT by george76

Statutes on matters that range from death to taxes now in effect...

An annual sales-tax holiday for Virginians, cracking down on underage drinking and raises for state employees are among the nearly 1,000 state laws that went into effect yesterday.

Virginia's civil-service-type workers will see a 4 percent increase in their paychecks starting in early December, though the budget authorizing the raise took effect yesterday.

Some of the laws were emergency measures and had already taken effect, while others will at a later date. But the bulk of the legislation became effective a little more than 24 hours ago.

The beginning of the new fiscal year brings laws from the major to the mundane: from the two-year, $74 billion budget to a law regulating grass cutting in Hanover County.

See 50 of the new provisions, ranging from the plain to the profound, that could affect the lives of many Virginians... Page A8.

Correct, then the ruling class can determine when and where to enforce what laws they deem necessary to control the peasants and raise revenues. I wonder how the state managed to survive without 1,000 new laws.

1,000 laws in one state in one government session !

There is no way to know, let alone obey all the new laws.

Then there are all the old laws to follow.

Geeze !

And how many of those new laws are also Felony violations, denying your rights to vote, keep and bear arms, own property, etc.. ??

The IRS has already done so.  Everyone breaks the IRS laws because it's impossible to know of, or comply with, all of them.

If the 10 commandments were the law of the land, then they would be the 1 million commandments today.

[It might have been better for all to have not chosen to have a king.]

1 Samuel 8

Israel Demands a King

1 Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the LORD. 7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men,[a] and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,(snip)

I've perused a lot of state Constitutions and naturally the U.S., and I'll be danged if I can find in any of them where it says they must pass new laws and/or regulations each session.

Its as if they think "Okay we're here. Guess we better 'do something' to justify our salaries and protect our phony baloney jobs".

They should sunset many of these new and old laws.

The politicians like to have credit for doing something. In their mind, the best is to put a brass plaque on some new government building with their name on it.

We would often be better off if they did nothing.

With apologies to CSM (somebody had to do it):

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." ('Atlas Shrugged' 1957)

Last session, they passed something like 26 new DWI laws.

In Southside VA, the only industry we have left is prisons.

Nearly 1000 new criminal offenses.

With the complications of the justice system - (Is that the understatement of the year?).
As I was saying, with the complications of the justice system, and uneven application of it - is it any great wonder that law enforcement might be frustrated in trying to up-hold "the rule of law". It would drive me crazy to try and enforce the mess we have.

I work as a machinist for a living. The same mathematical concepts that I use today to calculate geometry - were well known to ancient carpenters and masons. I have often pondered the though of what our colonial founding fathers would think of our government if they could be here today. I think it would throw them into shock.

At any time they can bust your front door in and seize you and everything you have.

It does happen and it's not extremely rare.  However, the point was that they have the right to do so at any time and believe it or not...YOU are a violator of their laws, just like every other American who can't possibly comply, or comprehend, the millions of IRS statutes and laws on the books.  For example:  How many Americans pay a yard man or maid for services in excess of $600.00 yearly?  Did you get their SSN and file a 1099?  The answer is no...and everyone who did so is a "tax criminal."  We are all "tax criminals."  There's no way from keeping from it.

Furthermore, you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent.

When it comes to the IRS Gestapo, this is always true...in all cases.
