A "Taqueria Mexicana?"
Sounds like Anyplace, USA nowadays, eh?
Not really. You'll never find one in Chappaqua or Martha's Vineyard.
No worse than the hundreds of "Ristorante Italiano" restaurants across the country.
Or like any other ethnic food joints that have populated America through history (Chinese comes to mind)...difference is, time will tell if the latinos assimilate fully or not. Last time I checked, all the other immigrants have, for the most part anyway, except the usual suspects, the muslims.
Being from So Cal, no one is more aware of the failure of the Mexican immigrants to assimilate than me. I just think starting a thread about a restaurant name where some poor young guy was gunned down and trying to turn it into some profound statement on immigration is silly.
"No worse than the hundreds of "Ristorante Italiano" restaurants across the country."
Uhhh, yeah, it is. First, it's a dive-bar, not a restaurant. Second, it's Mexican only. Thse places exist so they won't have to assimilate, learn the language, etc.
In the original story, which was in the paper, there were quotes from those at the club. They had to be translated from Spanish by a hispanic woman on the CL staff and she got a byline for assisting in the story.
Notice the immigration status is not even alluded to.

It does, indeed. And the same places have an Italian restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, and a Vietnamese restaurant these days. Maybe even an Indian restaurant, a Greek restaurant, and who knows what else.
Your point?
Where is this?
Mississippi I think.
Sure as heck isn't in Tijeras.
Not really. You'll never find one in Chappaqua or Martha's Vineyard.
What does any of that have to do with the origanl poster's comment about the reasaurant name being more common in today's USA.
Hear, hear! I'm with you.
"Frank Melton has been a huge disappointment."
It surely does sound like it.
"He runs around town acting like Rambo and Bufford
Pusser's offspring while the crime rate is going
up every day."
LOL!
Your posts are as colorful as wardaddy's. ;o)
I do miss his posts, too.
"I think he is sincere about the crime rate
but isn't getting anything done."
He may be sincere, but results matter.
And, his result doesn't appear to be good.
Hey, bourbon!
Happy Independence Day to all y'all!
What can one mayor do? His political colleagues love to rip into him, but I can't recollect any solutions or better ideas coming from them.
He is trying, and his face time on TV is bringing attention to the city's crime and I love watching him on TV.
Happy 4th to y'all.
Instead of just scrolling past them all, please take a moment to click the applicable state(s) on the Topics screen when posting localized news.
I see some Frank in YOU, or some of YOU in Frank, BTW.
I'll take that as a compliment
or maybe Frank should. :>)
You ain't seen nothing yet
Just wait til me and Haley lose all that weight
L98Fiero made my point.
See #6 above.
A (belated) Happy 4th to y'all too.
"What does any of that have to do with the origanl poster's comment about the reasaurant name being more common in today's USA."
As I said, it's not a restaurant. Anyway, I though you were referring to the place, not the name.
"Really? Click this link:"
Good job. Now find me a Spanish-language only Mexican dive bar in a run-down strip mall on the Vineyard.
Also, taquerias serve authentic Mexican Food, not Tex-Mex. You can hardly recognize anything on the menu even when translated to English. MM's link is to a swanky Tex-Mex restaurant and he knows it.

Actually, if you read the link, it's a hole-in-the-wall Tex-Mex restaurant. No, there's no Taqueria on Martha's Vineyard. There is a Mexican restaurant, though.
I like taquerias. I don't care if their menus are in Spanish. I don't care if I'm the only anglo in the joint. I order in Spanish.
I don't like Tex-Mex so much. Flautas de pollo just aren't my thing. That's probably because I grew up in California, where the Mexican food is from another part of Mexico.
On the other hand, I'm guessing that those fancy joints on Martha's Vineyard all have Spanish-speaking workers in the kitchen and cleaning up. Most will be illegals.
Hahahahahahaha.
B put you in 3rd place too!
LOL!
Hope to see you soon, B and you too, WKB3.
B put you in 3rd place too!
Not third place there "blondie"
just with 2 women on each side.
As it should be.
A veritable "WKB sandwich."
Oh boy. He's going to love that a little too much.

Crime is definitely worse than before. But I'm hearing from a source in the Sheriff's office that a lot of the crime is attributable to New Orleanian refugees.
In fact, the C/L reported recently that crime was up 50% in south Jackson, which includes the strip along Highway 80 with a lot of low-rent motels that have housed Katrina refugees.
Crime was also up 40% in NE Jackson, probably due to a big upsurge in carjackings along the I-55 frontage roads -- which roads facilitate easy getaways.
Meanwhile, the crime rate has been basically stable in west and northwest Jackson.
Prediction: The JXN's crime rate will fall next year, as the refugees gradually leave, regardless of anything that Mayor Frank does or doesn't do.
