I saw a flag the wind had tattered,
No one to care or think it mattered!
Windtorn and faded stripes were flapping,
Pale stars upon pale blue were napping
I wondered if a bugle blowing,
Would rouse our country to bestowing...
Upon our flag more true devotion,
And stir our hearts with real emotion!
Forgotten there, so bravely flying.
A symbol worn but never dying
A challenge to a nation sleeping,
A loyal sentry, Watch is keeping!

Edna R. Zunino

Happy July 4th - POTLATCH

I'm disappointed.

I wish they would have invited me.

I would have celebrated by honoring the Secvond Amendment.

Relax....

Think of Santa Cruz as the sandbox were we've confined the looniest of the loony -- including the UCSC campus..

For decades, the city has been overrun and run by the "campus community" which is comprised mostly of Leftists, Marxists, Queers, Lesbians, Transsexuals, Bisexuals, potheads, crack heads, heroin addicts, career welfare rats, social cockroaches and misc. miscreants....

Think of Santa Cruz as a no talent, no class San Francisco...

Next year we should get some Freepers to have a counter-flag burn. N. Korea, France, China, Iran, Hezballa, Syria, UN all sound like the beginning of a good list. Ironically the one that would really piss them off would be a Gay Pride flag.

I don't care if anyone is gay but the Rainbow Flag symbolizes an agenda to make it mandatory to celebrate, venerate the gay lifestyle while continueing lies about the "shared" reality of Aids and the overall necessity to denigrate heterosexuals and heterosexual marriage while demanding the same right.

I'll guarantee you that the one vote short on the Flag Burning Amendment was just a coincidence. Republicans don't really want to pass it, they like bringing it up every election year. Notice that conservative Republicans Mitch McConnell and Robert Bennett voted against it, as if the leadership couldn't get one more vote. McConnell will likely be majority leader when Frist retires, so its as clear a ploy as can be.

Sha Lar is has an unlisted phone number, but there is a Brent Adams in Santa Cruz who is listed. Odds are he's not the one this story is about.

If these people really were interested in celebrating freedom of speech they'd have their phone numbers listed.

Its really simple. We don't need to change the current law about flag desecration. We just need to decriminalize physical assault on flag burners.

I believe that the Senate made a mistake in not passing the Amendment on to the States.

It is also my belief that any American citizen who miliciously burns or descreates the American Flag should be hanged.

People in foreign lands who burn the American Flag I can understand their actions. They hate us and hate what we stand for. Not everyone loves us.

It is the sorry bastards that call themselves American citizens that descreate and burn the symbol of what America stands for and represents America that gets my goat. If they do not like this Country, Fine and Good have the dencency to leave and go to another Country. But to take advantage of the protections and privilleges that this Flag provides and then disrespect and injure it makes my blood boil.

Burning another country's flag doesn't have anything to do with free speech in the U.S., and wouldn't get much press. And no, burning an American flag is the perfect demonstration of free speech, because no police or army showed up to disappere them. That's the point. I wish you people would realize you don't have to be a liberal to defend free speech. If it was the second amendemnt, would you be singing the same tune? Or do you even know what the second amendment is?

If you spend some time dissecting what I said, you'll see that I mostly agree with you.

I didn't say that burning the American flag should be illegal. I pointed out that burning the flag of a country (our country) that supports free speech is not a valid demonstration for or of free speech. I said what I said because it would make more sense to burn Cuba's flag, Iran's flag, and North Korea's flag. Those are places where such actions are expressly forbidden, and the acts will anger those governments - who are not friends of ours. Whereas, burning our flag in a pointless act of free speech only makes our enemies feel warm and fuzzy.

Ah yes, a libertarian with a little sense. Why waste our time on this? And why say so much stupid stuff? IMHO, this is all about church and state. The flag is not a holy symbol. I personally date my U.S. of A. back to 1776, not to Plymouth Rock. Defending freedom of speech is fine - but who cares? Apparently people want to make flag burning illegal. Why? WHO CARES? People who equate the flag with a holy symbol - and not with freedom of speech, like these harmless liberals - piss me off; if you want a holy symbol, try the constitution - including the BILL OF RIGHTS. Would any of you people even bother posting on this if it were the bill of rights being burned? No - no one would even notice.

To: coconutt2000

The point is that burning some other country's flag wouldn't be a question of free speech in this country. The right of civilians in North Korea to bear arms hardly has any impact on us here in the U.S. What makes this an issue of free speech is that Congress has been trying to AMEND the FIRST AMENDMENT. It's a stupid idea. Why bother? So you can get the redneck vote? (Yes, that's probably it.)
As I keep telling my liberal friends, conservatives are smart, dammit! Debate, not censorship! The right side will win, I guarantee it.
