SANTA FE Never say that New Mexico isn't innovative: The state's Game & Fish Department officers in Raton are using paintball guns to chase the black bears out of town.
"It's just another tool," said Lief Ahlm, northeast operations area chief for the department, explaining that his officers also use rubber buckshot.
But Ahlm said the rubber buckshot in a shotgun is noisy and expensive $1-$2 a shot. "I can buy 500 paintballs for about 10 bucks," said Ahlm, "and my guys can hit him maybe 8 or 10 times. As fast as you can pull the trigger, you can launch a lot of paintballs at a bear."
It hurts but doesn't damage the bear. "If it's traveling 200 to 300 feet a second, it's going to hurt," said Ahlm, but the officers aim for the bear's body or behind.
Ahlm's officers started trying the paintball guns last summer and now they're considered one of the department's regular tools to chase bears out of town. "We're not trying to be cruel," said Ahlm, "but if it's no fun to be in town, maybe the bear won't be in town."
And why do bears want to be in town? With the recent drought, their normal supply of acorns and piñon nuts is drying up. And with a sense of smell that's reported to be hundreds of times better than a human's, the bears are lured by aromas of fast food smells like Kentucky Fried Chicken and the grease pits behind restaurants.

Maybe the officers can use them on taggers, too.
I have to wonder if this would work for liberal Democrats in my neighborhood?
Things have gone seriously downhill since Ditka left...
They should fill the balls with ammonia - would drive the bears nuts.
How about pepper spray?
Should I PING the Illinois contingent? LOL
Bart: I better go check out this Mongo character.
[Bart reaches for his gun]
Jim: Oh no, don't do that.
Bart: Why not?
Jim: If you shoot him, you'll just make him mad.
I used a BB gun on a mother bear and her three 2nd-year cubs in my backyard. Worked great!
Put the paintballs in the freezer the night before. Not that iI would do something so bad. ;-)
And watch grown men cry about times left behind? Nah, I couldn't stand it.
Use Pepperball. Paint balls with pepperspray in them.
If you want a bit more punch, chill the paintballs in a freezer.
the paint in them is water-based, and semi-frozen paintballs hurt like HELL when you play in the winter :)

Mongo just pawn in Game of Life
you can get them at most any LEO equipment supplier...
I got an email the other day from some friends in a mountain subdivision just outside ABQ. Seems as though mountain lions have been seen in the area. And twice in the past week coyotes attacked dogs being walked on leases with the owners present and who fought them off, though in the second instance it required treatment by a vet. I think in those instances, I'd be packing something more than paintballs. (A lady about a mile away from them died from the plague earlier this summer; suspicion is that one or more of the coyotes is rabid or sick with the plague.)
You would have to open a new Wal-Mart or move a family of color next door.
Done it and yep. It is evil. Leaves huge bruises. You can actually knock someone out that way. Don't ask me how I know. ;-)
'Stupid Redneck Tricks'? "Hey, y'all watch THIS!" LMAO
shhhhhh.... loose lips sink ships.
I hope you had backup. Bears are absolutely unpredictable and very dangerous. I wouldn't try that without something with real authority close at hand or in a partner's hands.
Actually, they've already got them available with a) capcasin powder, and b) a substance that's SO unberably stinky, that all you can do is try to get away from it! The last one has been used to break up prison riots!
Mark
Keep the paint balls in the freezer until they are fired.
OUCH!!! That will teach the bears a lesson.
That's EXACTLY what my wife said! In fact, when I went out to clean up the mess they left, she was backing me up with my Glock .45.
