Not all House Democrats are up on their leadership’s playbook (New Direction "uninspired")

Not all House Democrats are up on their leadership’s playbook
By Josephine Hearn

Three weeks have passed since congressional Democrats announced their “New Direction for America,” the domestic agenda they propose should they win control of the House or Senate, but some Democrats apparently still haven’t gotten the memo.

Asked Thursday to comment on their agenda, a half-dozen House Democrats remained fuzzy on the particulars.

“The new model, etc., etc?” faltered Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas).

“I haven’t even looked at it,” admitted Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.). “I’m not very good at talking points.”

“I like mine better,” Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.) declared while looking over a list of the Democrats’ six priorities as if it were the first time he’d seen it.

House and Senate Democratic leaders unveiled the agenda mid-June with some fanfare. They held a press conference, wrote letters to their colleagues, talked it up in caucus meetings, distributed laminated talking-point cards and plugged it in an exclusive interview with USA Today.

“This is a watershed moment,” the leaders wrote to their colleagues June 13. “Democrats are listening to what matters to the country, and have united behind a positive agenda that will get America back on track.”

On Thursday they drove the point home again with an encore press conference held before easel displays proclaiming “New Direction for America” 21 times. The six-pronged agenda proposes providing affordable healthcare, lowering gas prices, raising the minimum wage, lowering the cost of college, preventing Social Security privatization and restoring fiscal responsibility.

Still, even by later in the day Thursday, the message had yet to saturate some areas of the Democratic caucus, an unsettling situation for a party that often laments the fact that it must compete for press attention with the president’s bully pulpit.

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) said he was not sure what agenda had been unveiled weeks earlier and reprised an hour before.

“What was presented today?” he asked, brow furrowed, while noting that a “fish crisis” in his district had kept him from staying current.

It wasn’t until presented with a laminated talking-points card that he perked up. “Oh! Good stuff!” he exclaimed.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) started off slow — “Which slogan are you referring to? — but rallied gamely, expounding on the virtues of the “New Direction.”

“I think it is a potent phrase. Do you want more of the same, or do you want a new direction? I think it’s a very powerful message,” he intoned.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), senior Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, handled an inquiry with aplomb, pronouncing the agenda “excellent.”

“It gives the Democrats a platform so they can talk about energy, economic security, healthcare. We need a new direction in America!”

Hours earlier, Pelosi had described her colleagues as “very enthusiastic” and “excited” about the “New Direction” slogan and agenda. “It’s interesting because they have been positively enthusiastic about it — not just acquiescing to it, but positively enthusiastic about it.”

Those who know what it is, that is.

One Democratic member lamented that too few Democrats attend their caucus meetings when such agenda items are presented.

“People don’t come to caucus. That’s the problem,” the member said.

The record attendance for the caucus meeting, set earlier this year, was a mere 102 of the 205 eligible Democrats.

Some Democrats grumbled last week that the problem lies with the new slogan itself.

“It’s not good. It’s not punchy enough,” a Democratic aide said. “It’s uninspired.”

The “New Direction” message largely replaces an earlier slogan, “Together, American can do better,” which had received a lukewarm reception in some Democratic circles and has since been relegated to secondary status in press releases and public statements.

“There are always complaints unless the slogan — ... the direction is created by that person,” Pelosi said.

Democrats will get another chance to learn the details of the “New Direction” this week. Pelosi sent them home with an 83-page packet describing it.

LOL! These people are so clueless. Clinton had the presidential bully pulpit back in '94 but the GOP was somehow able to come up with a compelling message of change. The Democrats want to return to power but admit in the next breath they don't have an agenda to fulfill if that happens. Yeah, right.

By their own admission, they're uninspiring. They can't give people ONE reason to vote FOR them. Of course, they know who they are against. But it will not be enough to make up the distance they have to travel to where they'd like to be in the fall.

"Democrats will get another chance to learn the details of the “New Direction” this week. Pelosi sent them home with an 83-page packet describing it."

To be followed by a 356-page annotated appendix next week.

Not to worry, though, Dems - there will be a WHOLE NEW SLOGAN the next week after: "We're Democrats, The Party Your Mother Warned You About!"

The “New Direction” message largely replaces an earlier slogan, “Together, American can do better,”

The "New Direction" sounds a lot like the "New Deal." And we all know how well that worked out. BTW, there's absolutely NOTHING in the dems' "New Direction" that deals with national security, border security, defense, immigration, the war on terror (including Iraq/Afghanistan) or ANYTHING that the American people are concerned about. And, oh, hooray for raising the minimum wage (like all Americans make the minimum wage) and reducing community college costs. This is the best they can do?

They're divided on the war, on illegal immigration and don't know how to help the shrinking middle class. That about sums up the Democrats' position going into the November election.

I've said for some time that the only chance the Dems have in November is to do a Gingrich and come up with a Contract With America. I figured it's safe to say so because I knew perfectly well that if they did it'd be this bunch of vague pablum instead of specific points. Lower gas prices? How? Prevent the privatization of Social Security? How? Provide affordable healthcare? How? Lower the cost of college? How? And the big one, IMHO, restoring fiscal responsibility - you can either do this by cutting spending or raising taxes or both. So which is it going to be?

If they can't answer these questions then they don't have programs, they have talking points. There's a big, big difference.

I certainly agree with that, but think they could at least pay lip service to the need for the defense of our nation. Or, perhaps they plan to follow Kerry's lead and leave it to the UN to administer a "global test." BWAHAHAHA!

Its funny how the Democrats rail at supposed Republican incompetence. Here they can't even pass a budget in New Jersey, where their party has unified control of both elected branches of the state government. What's their excuse for incompetence there?

That must explain all the nonstop excitement at my work, which is full of liberals. They are apparently so charged up about this incredible agenda that they haven't mentioned it once.

Democrats Announce their 'Contract with America'

Remembering how Newt Gingrich's 1994 "Contract with America" helped Republicans end 40 years of Democrat domination in the House of Representatives, leading Democrats have announced their own version. Called
"Six in '06," the Democrats' contract has six planks:

(1) A congressional pay increase, also known as the "William Jefferson plank." "Representative Jefferson was forced to take on a role of a corrupt politician in what he thought was an independent film, but turned out to be
an FBI sting operation," said House Minority Leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). "If members of congress were paid a decent salary, this type of tragedy could have been averted." (Senators and Representatives currently
receive salaries of $162,100 per year.)

(2) Nationalizing health care. "Our medical care is a mess," said Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y). "America's health is too important to be left up to the medical profession. It's time for the government to take control to ensure a more rational and equitable distribution of benefits."

(3) Impeaching President Bush. "Republicans impeached President Clinton for diddling an intern," said Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). "It'll be payback time once we get the majority."

(4) Increasing taxes. "Republicans want voters to believe that lower taxes encourage investment and hard work," said Senator Minority Leader, Harry Reid (D-Nev.). "We say IRS audits and the threat of going to jail is all the encouragement required to make people work hard. Congress will do the investing once we restore the revenues given away by the Bush tax cuts."

(5) End the war on terror. "No matter how brave our soldiers are, no matter how valiant, no matter what their caring," said Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.). "Our soldiers cannot bring democracy to Iraq at the barrel of a gun. Some on the right use the fact that U.S. troops were able to defeat tyranny in World War II and bring democracy to Germany and Japan to try to support President Bush's ambitions for Iraq. But those were different times. We had a Democratic president, bipartisan support for the war effort, a cooperative media, and grateful foreign allies. Due to an unfortunate decision by too many voters in 2004, none of these key factors are present in the current crisis. Until that decision is reversed there is no hope. So, let's bring the troops home and end the bloodshed."

(6) "Wild card." "We really wanted to have six key issues-you know, six for 2006-but we couldn't agree on what the last item would be," said Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. "Some wanted recognition of gay marriage, others suggested a law guaranteeing every woman's right to an abortion. So, we're keeping one slot open. Voters can fill-in the blank with whatever they want. On the other hand, there is this 'feces for fascists' idea coming out of Colorado that represents the kind of fresh
ideas our party needs. Eventually, maybe we'll get some focus groups together to figure out where our Party stands on some issue or other."

It's expected that Democratic candidates would stage some kind of televised signing ceremony as Newt Gingrich and the Republicans did in 1994. House Democrats are expected to pledge to enact all six items within six months of taking back the majority in congress.

"reducing community college costs"

Last time I checked Community Colleges are STATE run insitutions that have next to nothing with the Fed Govt. SO, how are they going to "Reduce Community College Costs" All inceasing "Federal Student Aid" means, for about 85% of the students increasing availablity of Student LOANS. Those are LOANS that must be paid BACK. Thus this "New Direction is nothing but another Democrat Party PR lie. They will not reduce costs a cent. They will merely make it possible for students to go even farther into debt in getting their degrees.

It reminds me of the Carter Presidency. The Democrats controlled the White House, Senate, and House, and still couldn't get much done.
