Ward Churchill Appeals U. of Colo. Firing

The University of Colorado professor who likened some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi official has appealed to keep his job as school officials move to fire him for what they say is research misconduct.

Interim Chancellor Philip DeStefano last week said the university should fire ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill; a faculty committee concluded last month that he committed misconduct.

Churchill requested a review Wednesday, the school announced. The process includes a confidential hearing, with the committee's findings forwarded to the school president.

Churchill has vowed to sue if he is fired. The professor penned a 2001 essay that compared white-collar workers at the World Trade Center to Adolf Eichmann, a key planner of the Holocaust. The essay attracted little attention until January 2005, when he was invited to speak at a New York college.

Colorado Gov. Bill Owens and others called for Churchill to be fired. University officials ordered an investigation into his scholarship.

School investigators said that Churchill misrepresented the effects of federal laws on American Indians and that he wrongly claimed evidence indicated Capt. John Smith exposed Indians to smallpox in the 1600s. It also said he committed plagiarism by claiming the work of a Canadian environmental group as his own. Churchill said that the investigation was an attempt to dump him because of outside pressure, and that no professor's work could stand up to such scrutiny.

Last sentence in the article: "Churchill said that the investigation was an attempt to dump him because of outside pressure, and that no professor's work could stand up to such scrutiny." this may have more truth in it than at first glance, especially if applied aginst the writings of some of the liberal professors teaching today.

Good! Nice to see an incredibly pompous azz such as this get his handed to him. It exposes what a lot of these psycho Professors are; Very insecure children who fail to develop emotionally, fail to take responsibilty for themselves, so they never leave "playland" and lash out at "Mommy and Daddy" anytime any problems come their way, which usually means blaming the US Govmnt.

Pretty freggin` pathetic. And how old is this guy now? And here is is still playing Cowboys and Indians.

"Captain, you will play my way or we will not play at all! It is allll your fault! All your fault!"

"Trelane, your parents have just told me they`ve fired you!"

"That`s not fair! That`s not fair! Waaah!"

Like it or not, the good professor did invite a certain level of public scrutiny arising from his published utterances. That is all well and good, as we are constantly reminded that sunlight is the best disinfectant and so on, and by golly, it's pretty sunny where he's at, so what's he complaining about? A casual read indicates he's neither an Indian nor much of a scholar though, allegedly he plagiarized numerous works and artwork/sketches.

Maybe he's not a bad guy, but he really stepped into it. What gets me, if I had a bit of money to deal with - the tax angle on university donations is quite nice - I would find another school for my largesse and make sure the regents understood; exactly why this doesn't happen more often is inexplicable.

"Churchill has vowed to sue if he is fired."

I can't think of a better expenditure for public funds than spending money to publicly thrash this fraud in court. It sure beats using the money to pay his salary. Go for it Ward! As a result maybe a few other Ward wannabees will decide to seek other careers or watch their behavior. Lets see who has the deepest purse for the fight, you or the taxpayers.

If Churchill is correct that most professors could not stand up to scrutiny as he has, maybe it's time to look into ALL professors to see who's honest, and who needs to end up on the employment line.

Yeah, but he brought this attention upon himself which is what he wanted, so they gave him that. Everything about this guy is a fraud, even down to paintings he did and claimed as his own.

There was one painting he did that was publicized a year or so ago that he claimed was an original by him, and it was practically a paint by numbers of another painting by a Native American. They put both of them side by side and it was identical.

Ann Coulter even claimed a few months back all he had was a liberal arts degree. I had Professors just like this putz, I would be sitting in on a lecture hearing the biggest BS you ever heard in your life wondering how the hell this guy even got close to a classroom, and that was 25 years ago. One in particular was an English Professor who claimed an Emily Dickinson poem was written by Elizabeth Browning, and studenst were constantly telling him he was wrong, and he would get furious. This went on for weeks until he was exposed as an fraud and we never saw him again. I don`t even want to think what kind of crap they pass off as Professors now. It`s all based on this clique of liberals...They meet each other at their pot/LSD parties (well now it`s probably GW Bush bashing parties) and the BS flies and next thing you know they`re tenured with nothing more than a High school diploma and a few weeks at your local community college.

Then fire them all!

If college professors can't maintain scholarly and ethical standards set by universities, then they don't deserve to be there.

The conclusion one must draw from such examples isn't that every institution has its bad apples but rather that, at least in the liberal arts in America, moral turpitude and political hucksterism pervades higher education.

Radical criminals with questionable academic credentials flourish in a milieu that bristles with hostility toward real scholars who don't toe the party line—witness the case of former Harvard President Lawrence Summers.

Individuals with prison records or FBI rap sheets don't get into major educational institutions because they fudge their resumes.

They get in because they share the political dogmas of those who hire them—and they flourish for the same reason.

           morphing of the two?
Increase Mail's piece by 109%, reverse it, and the two overlap perfectly, down to the shape of the grass and the position of each rider's feathers, even the position of the horses' legs.

Yet Churchill still maintains it is an original composition.

SWEET Ann Coulter takes another look at the Ward Churchill controversy:

Tenure was supposed to create an atmosphere of open debate and inquiry, but instead has created havens for talentless cowards who want to be insulated from life.

Rather than fostering a climate of open inquiry, college campuses have become fascist colonies of anti-American hate speech, hypersensitivity, speech codes, banned words and prohibited scientific inquiry.

Even leftists don't try to defend Churchill on grounds that he is Galileo pursuing an abstract search for the truth.

They simply invoke "free speech," like a deus ex machina to end all discussion.

Like the words "diverse" and "tolerance," "free speech" means nothing but: "Shut up, we win."

The tax angle works most of the time. However, and this is ONLY MY OPINION, you take a school like UT, here in Texas. Old family money, legacy money, OIL money, and basically UT acts like it's untouchable. Sometimes, the new money potential just doesn't excite the big schools. UT has a great case of "big-school-itis." I used to administrate a molecular biology lab there. I absolutely love the students and admire MOST of the bio researchers. Of course, the sports teams are wonderful too. Dealing with the beaurocrats is another story altogether. It's like talking to martians!

I wouldn`t be suprised if he sues for being exposed as a fraud and wins. If a woman can sue for not being told McDonalds coffee is hot and wins, than anything is possible. By the way, that is one court transcript I would love to read...

"Where you told the coffee was hot?"

"No I was not"

"Did you have any idea that the coffee was hot?"

"No I did not.."

"Did the steam coming off the coffee give you an indication that it may have been hot?"

"No, I thought it was dry ice"

Churchill says most professors could not stand up to scrutiny as he has.

In the U.K., there is a government agency that evaluates the research of each department every 5 or so years. I understand that they takes the four best papers of each department member over the past 5 years, and evaluate the quality of the research. Each department of a University gets a grade that is public information. It used to be a grade up to 5, but lately some top departments have been awarded a 6 for excellence in research. So if you put a fire under the rear ends of academics, you can increase quality of output.

Australia is now considering adopting this research quality control technique. Given that these governments are spending billions on their Universities, institutions that are supposed to be 'communities of scholars whose purpose is the advancement and dissemination of knowledge', with advancement meaning research, the State can reasonably try to get its money's worth.

Why can't we do this in the US?

Tenure my fellow freeper, tenure. Peer review takes place but rarely is a professor called out for plagerism, biased sampling, or outright lies outside of medical/scientific publications.

I can think of so many research papers, from prestigious Universities/Professors that have turned out to be nothing but junk. First and foremost was the Superbowl Myth (domestic violence against women goes up during the Superbowl) as well as numerous studies on the supposed wage gap.

Not only was the Superbowl study proven to be a complete lie, myth and fabrication, some still believe it and those who conducted the "research" never faced any disciplinary action.

Wage gap studies have been shown to include poor sampling methods and in many cases outright fudging of figures. Again, nothing is done.

Complaints against Churchill over his plagiarism began well before his 2001 statements about the victims of 9/11. Now, 6 years later he still is not officially fired.

Tenure is like a Supreme Court position, you're in until death or retirement and regardless of how badly you act, it's almost impossible to be removed.

Many years ago in grad school I took a course on polymer solution thermodynamics from a visiting professor from CNRS in France (Henri Benoit.) Prof. Benoit made quite an impression on us - admonishing us to have a healthy skepticism concerning results, even in peer-reviewed journals. When asked about a particular theoretical paper, he exclaimed, "Pfft - I never believe a theory until someone who does not believe the theory publishes results that support the theory."

Isn't that the point of real peer review? Having an unbiased source either duplicate results or come to the same resulting conclusions?

Yes, that is the goal of real peer review. After almost 30 yrs in science, I can say that scientists have their favorite ideas, just like everyone else. Being skeptical of ones own ideas takes real diligence.

I worked in law enforcement, specifically in crime scene for years, I learned the importance of not allowing my personal opinion get in the way of evidence.

We have a saying, evidence doesn't lie, it's just misinterpreted. Luckily we have others who through scientific methods and study affiarm or discount our findings.
