This is indeed heartbreaking and little Clare and her loving family have my prayers.

I heard a wonderful Orthodox rabbi (a tzaddik) explain why babies and little children sometimes die. He said that we all have work to do down here, work that will make the world better (tikkun olam) and work to make us, our souls better. He said that some come down here so pure already that there is precious little for them to do here. Thus they don't stay very long.

It's as good an explanation as any. Little Clare must be a bit purer than the rest of us, G-d protect her.
