I would consider this a version of trying to mollify the libs and the msm, it isn't going to change anything.Screw, 'em, take your vacation, you deserve it.

a slowdown in the economy

Yep, I caught that too and wondered what world they live in when they are not in mommy's basement. They must be writing about the "old media's" economic status, don't ya think?

Good Lord, it sounds like Nedra was sucking on a lemon the entire time she was writing this.

gives MSM more ammo to lie about our President having lazy days of summer.

The inconsistencies of the Left and the MSM is mind boggling. The complain about his vacations, but then they complain about his working in the Oval Office.

Did they ever carp about Bill Clinton's vacations?

Earth to Nedra: Here's what's really happening, as reported by Larry Kudlow on another thread:

Did you know that just over the past 11 quarters, dating back to the June 2003 Bush tax cuts, America has increased the size of its entire economy by 20 percent? In less than three years, the U.S. economic pie has expanded by $2.2 trillion, an output add-on that is roughly the same size as the total Chinese economy, and much larger than the total economic size of nations like India, Mexico, Ireland and Belgium.

This is an extraordinary fact, although you may be reading it here first. Most in the mainstream media would rather tout the faults of American capitalism than sing its praises. And of course, the media will almost always discuss supply-side tax cuts in negative terms, such as big budget deficits and static revenue losses. But here's another suppressed fact: Since the 2003 tax cuts, tax-revenue collections from the expanding economy have been surging at double-digit rates, while the deficit is constantly being revised downward.

For those who bother to look, the economic power of lower-tax-rate incentives is once again working its magic. While most reporters obsess about a mild slowdown in housing, the big-bang story is a high-sizzle pick-up in private business investment, which is directly traceable to Bush's tax reform. It was private investment that was hardest hit in the early decade stock market plunge and the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist bombings. So team Bush's wise men correctly targeted investment in order to slash the after-tax cost of capital and rejuvenate investment incentives.

GMTA. If a lot of stuff hits the fan, it's more important that Bush is seen in Washington, leading the country. He's almost at the end of his term. He can stay in Crawford, whacking brush as much as he wants, once his term ends.

I am really not adept at reading between the lines, tinfoil or not.

Could you interpret this please :)

With Republicans nervous about keeping control of Congress and Bush's own worries about the future of Iraq, Iran and North Korea...

Hmmm, Nedra, for shorthand why don't we just call those countries "The Axis of Evil", as President Bush did - and was roundly criticized for - in his State of the Union speech in January 2002?

What? Then that would make it appear that he was correct? Oh, I get it.

(in my best Church Lady impression) Now, isn't that special!

Here's what they're going to distort.

The Bush economy has been roaring along for years. Recently the growth was a staggering 5.6 %. Economists and the administration itself are forecasting a considerably slower summer and fall in terms of growth. So any scaling back of the roaring growth will be dubbed "an economic slowdown", even though the economy is predicted to continue growing but by less than recently.

No, it didn't. She got her dagger stuck in when she wrote "President George W. Bush, still down in the polls and grappling with grave matters on the world stage."

I don't really think President Bush cares as much about being down in the polls as he does about the world situation. Pickler is getting Clintonian values confused with Bush's real values.

You know this will be spun as "desperation to change his failing Presidency".

will offset the harsh realities of a slowdown in the economy

How can there be a slowdown in the economy when the MSM has never admitted that the economy was heating up?

"I'm sorry that the WHPC won't be sweating their pompous butts off in TX :)"

ROTFLOL!! That's exactly what I thought too. I loved it when he made them spend a month in TX - and Crawford to boot!!

But .. as a side thought .. maybe, if the press is not going to be there, Cindy will decide it's not worth doing either ..??

I am so glad that President Bush is doing this instead of hanging out at the ranch. Even though he continues to work during August, it gives MSM more ammo to lie about our President having lazy days of summer. I hate that every year even though every President has done this for as long as I remember.

I couldn't agree more. And - as others have mentioned here - Mother Sheehan & Co. will have to find another place besides Crawford, TX to carry out their "peace fast"...

"The White House is gambling that more exposure to the president in local media, where coverage tends to be softer than in Washington, will offset the harsh realities of a slowdown in the economy and trouble in Iraq." Huh?

It's called 'wishful thinking'.

And, in the MSM, merely writing it makes it TRUE!

Karl Rove may be a campaign genius, but letting the President stay in Crawford for a whole month every year has been a huge mistake.

I agree... I've never understood this.

Good synopsis on the economy. Thank you. Even Greenspan stated that the tax cuts should be given the credit for improving economy.

Nedra Pickler used to cover the auto industry and perhaps trying to paint the entire economy with that brush.
