A gang of youths who tried to ruin a pensioners' open-air concert were beaten back and fled when faced by a "Dad's Army" armed with walking sticks.
More than 30 youngsters, aged between 18 and 25, yelled obscenities at the brass band and kicked footballs at the conductor while terrorising the 300-strong elderly audience, which included Second World War veterans.
But a battalion of 20 pensioners, moved by a rendition of the theme from The Great Escape, rose from their deck chairs and formed a front line of attack. Wielding walking sticks, they advanced towards the enemy.
The youths lost ground and eventually turned on their heels and fled.
Yesterday former RAF pilot Les Brown, 78, who served in Egypt during the Second World War, said: "We got so fed up with these little toe-rags, that some of us decided to stop them.
"The Great Escape music came on and I looked round and caught glimpses of other people, who were obviously thinking the same as me. The next thing I knew I was standing up and marching towards them along with lots of others.
"It felt like I was back in the war again. But we were a determined lot. We might be old but these youngsters didn't stand a chance in hell."
The showdown flared in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, on Sunday as the youths spilled out of pubs after watching the World Cup.
Steve Rice, the chairman and tuba player with Bristol's Redland Wind Band, said: "We simply wanted to make people happy with some nice music, but these hooligans weren't interested in that. They wanted to cause trouble and were very drunk and aggressive."
That'll do it.
This happened in England. I will not be surprised when the "pensioners" are charged with assault.
Prbably lead to a ban on walking sticks
Great story! But what about political correctness and inclusiveness? What about considering the "needs" of the drunk and stupid? And maybe it's the great WWII generation's fault for preserving for them a country where they can be drunk and stupid and not be beheaded or shoved in concentration camps. /sarcasm - just in case/
RAF pilot Les Brown and his Absolutely Wonderful Band of Renown!
This is perfect;, well worth the read for a good smile and chuckle at the end.

:)
That's for sure, old timer. Good show, I say.
Thank God characters like these yobs weren't fighting the Germans 65+ years ago.
Since when are 18 to 25 year olds youngsters?
When they're required to enlist or trying to buy alcohol they're adults.....but when they're breaking the law they're 'youngsters'. What pathetic reporting.
Well done, Gentlemen. Carry on.
"Old age and guile with also outdo youth, good intentions and a bad haircut"... P.J. O'Rourke.
Jack.
Thanks. Couldn't recall it off the top of my head. I noticed it was written by Elmer Bernstein but it has a melody reminiscent of an old English drinking song.
"It felt like I was back in the war again. But we were a determined lot. We might be old but these youngsters didn't stand a chance in hell."

What a great story! Old guys rule!
What in the world is wrong with such young people?
Good for these guys! Nobody should put up with a drunken mob of young people. If everyone stood up to them, they might actually learn a lesson.
I'm sure they fled, like the cowards they are.
What is sad is that when these pensioners were 18 to 25, they were "men" engaged in the bloodiest war in history, fighting for God and country against a fierce and battle-hardened enemy --an enemy they helped defeat, and all the while watching their friends die every step of the way.
It is sad because now 18 to 25 year olds are considered "youngsters" but the definition fits in light of the way they behaved. It is a shame, really.
I guess they showed them who's boss
They've been softened by liberalism, political correctness and multiculturalism. They have lost their identity and purpose.
Socialism, atheism, and "multiculturalism". Welcome to today's UK.
Have we met?
A 25 year-old isn't a youngster. I'm surprised the Telegraph left that PC crap in the article.
Determination will beat a bunch of pussies everytime.
"You would not part an old man from his walking stick?"

Thanks for the post. I learned a new insult - "toe rag". I like that.
Too bad someone couldn't passed out a couple of Bren guns to the older gentlemen-just to make things a little more interesting.
God love the Vets, I know I do
Probably not. They were drunk. Most likely white kids. Plus, if these pensioners fought back against muslim hooligans, the headline would've read "Highly Trained Combat Veterans Attack Immigrants."
Many of the drunk and stupid "need" a walking stick upside the head.
Can we send them more walking sticks?
Too bad there's not a video. I'd pay good money, to be donated to British Veteran's homes, to see that.
And a charge of use and possession of an offensive weapon, to wit, the walking sticks. Possession of anything which can be used as an offensive weapon is banned in at least some jurisdictions in the UK.

but even thinking of sending them to the UK is probably a serious felony.
Bump......
Toe-rags...LOL! Well done Les!
