Pinkerton Leaves Liberals At Loss for Words on Missile Defense
Fox News Watch/Fox & Friends Weekend/NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

by Mark Finkelstein

July 9, 2006 - 14:12

Twice in less than 24 hours, conservative columnist Jim Pinkerton left liberal talking-head rivals at a loss for words on the issue of missile defense.

Pinkerton's first victim was Neal Gabler, on last evening's Fox News Watch. In the context of the North Korean missile tests, liberal Gabler flatly stated: "Missile defense does not work. That is what we have learned." Shot back Pinkerton: "The Japanese believe in it. That's why they're building it right now." Gabler's silence was golden.

Then this morning, Pinkerton made his regular appearance with Ellen Ratner in their 'Long & the Short of It' segment of Fox & Friends Weekend. Fans of the duo should be advised that the segment has been moved from Saturday to Sunday morning, at about 7:15 AM. The good news is that the pair are now appearing during two segments, an expansion of the short slot they had previously been accorded.

Could there be some liberal talking points in circulation on missile defense? Because, sure enough, Ellen trotted out the same line as Gabler: "Missile defense doesn't work."

Pinkerton had his retort ready: "Then why are Israel and Japan building it?"

Ratner ventured a response: "People can build it, it doesn't mean that it's working."

Pinkerton: "They think it's going to work, who knows more - them or you?"

This time, the Ratner's only reply was nervous laughter.

Score it Pinkerton 2, skeptical liberals 0.

Please note that I received an email from a Murtha "truth" squad operative after making a comment on a thread about Murtha's original comment. They used the retraction as proof Murtha didn't say what the video proves he said. It was funny that the approach came via FReepmail and not an open posting as part of the dialog. It smacked of MD4Bush trolling and the mods quickly cleaned up the troll. Here was the exchange:

Hi. I saw you commenting on this thread.

Did you know that The Sun-Sentinel issued a correction on June 28, stating that they misquoted Murtha because he was actually citing a recent Pew Research Center poll of public opinion in the United States and 14 European, African, and Asian countries.?

Whether he invented itself or repeated it is of little difference. I want to see the transcript or hear the audio to determine the context for myself. What is your interest?

Its a bit like saying the 2nd Amendment doesnt work because you have a gun in your drawer. But if you are threatened and get it out and blow away the scumbag climbing in your window , it works great.

If it doesnt work now, Make it work.
Dont just sit on your hands and hope no one attacks. with all the third world butt wipes trying to get Nukes and missiles now , we better find something that works.

I still cannot figure out why the democrats are so adamantly opposed to a missle defense shield, and none of my liberal acquaintences are able to give me an answer, outside of a vague sense of: "well the right wing supports it, so it must be bad". It's almost as if the talking points on this issue haven't fully made the rounds. Being against a missle defense shield is like being against having a lock on your door under the premise that this will somehow "antagonize" a criminal and make him want to break into your house. I don't get it with these people.

Leftists have always been against missile defense. ....as reliable an indication as any of their incurable self-hatred. They don't want to be defended, feeling that they don't deserve to be. How else to explain their irrational (and often hysterical) opposition to a purely defensive weapon?

I would feel better about it if we'd used some aspect of the BMD technology to shoot down one or more of the NK missiles. Provocative? Yup. Make a point? Like nothing else. The US can talk it to death, but seeing a NK missile going into the ocean in a billion pieces sends the message that we don't have a wuss in the Whitehouse. Yet.

Israel and Japan (are) building it

So people whose lives depend on fast and accurate defense are building it, and liberals who depend on others to protect them are bad-mouthing it.

Simple choice on who to believe. Liberals get another free ride; they can complain about it the entire time, until somebody really needs it.

Nice analogy, American! I love how China & Russia are against sanctions for North Korea because they feel it will "raise tensions" in the area. The only one who is raising tensions is Kim Jong ILL by making threats and launching missles!! As long as he knows the international community wont stand up to him, his beligerant behavior will continue. Once again, the U.N. demonstrates how useless and irrelevant it is.

We don't know that it wasn't shot down, although I think North Korean incompetence is a better bet.
BTW, the current (quiet) sanction campaign against NK was put together by John Bolton.
I always believed SDI was doable, as long as we can keep traitors, er, Democrats, er, the press from giving it to the enemy.
I mean, something going on at area 51-isn't it?

It is definitely newsworthy when a goober on the left is challenged, bested, and silenced with facts and the truth. "They can't handle the truth". That's why they spin-speak in banal tongues, generalities mixed with old, scripted lies that don't pass the "make sense" test.

Way too often talking heads on the right seem unprepared to do verbal battle, they let the lefties spew out distortions without correcting them. Maybe they don't want to be rude? It's maddening! So kudos for telling us about Pinkerton's efforts.

I think we got insight into Gabler's personality. Did you see how he enjoyed the email compliment about being good looking? He just ate it up, laughed like a hyena, so thrilled was he. But the funniest part of Gabler watching is his finger point. He lectures when he speaks, and adds emphasis by accusatory pointing, sometimes with one hand, then the other, then both together all within one response. It's hilarious!

SDI may or may not have worked in 1983. The computer technology available then made it iffy. That is not the case now, processor speed makes accurately targeting a missile possible. Liberal opposition is their knee jerk reaction to anything that will defend the US. We have a major league 5th column in this country that seeks its destruction.

I don't know what these people are thinking.

Do they believe that man is not creative and inventive? That technology doesn't improve?

It may work (in fact, it does work to some degree as we've seen scuds get shot down in real war, and tests have shown it work).

But what alternative do these naysayer suggest? They just say "It can't be done" or "it doesn't work", but why and then what? What do they suggest we do otherwise? Just wait for the inevitable? Or pre-emptively surrender?

I don't get it.

You'd think these idiots parroting the DNC talking points would be embarrassed by now.

Problem is, you really can't embarrass a shameless person.

Right up until about six months ago, we were hearing that missile defense was a waste of money because the chief danger from nuclear weapons was that nuclear rogue states would distribute their nukes to terrorists. Somebody forgot to tell that to NoKorea and Iran. Now that it's clear that nuclear rogue states want nuclear weapons in their arsenals for nuclear blackmail, not for use by anonymous terrorists, this ridiculous argument has evaporated.

But fear not. The lefties will have a new talking point soon. The best trial balloon I've heard so far is: "we don't want to make a big deal out of this because it just encourages them." Look for this to be developed into: "if we build missile defense, they'll just build better missiles."

Uh huh.

All the way back in the '80s the Soviets were jumping up and down and hollering about Reagan's "Star Wars" missle defense initiative - - they threatened this and threatened that and wouldn't sign treaties and basically had a giant hissy fit over the whole idea....

All the while, the liberal Democrats were yipping about how "Star Wars" could never work and was nothing but a huge waste of money, etc., etc. (See something wrong with this picture?)

Rational humans with IQs exceeding 85 could only shake their heads at the obvious contradiction.
Twenty years later the stupidity of liberals has apparently only entrenched itself further.
All you can do is shake your head.

As best I can deduce from the liberal knuckleheads that I am acquainted with, their opposition to a missile defense is the cost and that it won't be 100% effective 100% of the time. Also it is money that could be spent on some social program like cradle to grave healthcare and to buy more votes for the democRATS. It's little more than that.

Sure, getting a missile defense system operational is going to be very expensive. It isn't going to be 100% all the time, and there will then be an effort to defeat the effectiveness of it. Military secrets /technology are the most costly and fleeting of all.

Good afternoon.

While we were driving one day I had a close friend tell me that we couldn't stop all the missiles coming in if the Soviets attacked, and he didn't want he and his children to live in the world that would be left.

I told him the missiles might miss me and that he should reach behind the seat, grab my pistol right then and shoot himself, but to not try to take away my chance of surviving. He was horrified.

I miss my friend, but we just don't see things the same way.

Result: Soviet Empire no longer exits.

The reason is that an effective missile defense significantly reduces the leverage other countries have on US policy.

I had a liberal professor in college who used to make the point often, calling it a "licence to wage war with no consequence".

She was totally against it (and she didn't hide her anti-americanism) arguing not that it would not work, but that if it did work, the US would not have any incentive to find diplomatic solutions or not to wage war at any time since it would not have to worry about retaliation anymore.
