Durbin says Guantanamo should be closed by end of 2006 AP

July 11, 2006 - Senator Dick Durbin said today the United States should immediately begin phasing out operations at its detention facilities on the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. The Illinois Democrat just returned from a fact-finding trip to the base.

Durbin says the goal should be to close the prison camp by the end of 2006.

He says despite the best efforts of American troops, Guantanamo has become a powerful, negative symbol around the world for failures of the Bush administration.

Durbin spoke on the same day the Bush administration said all Guantanamo detainees are entitled to protections under the Geneva Conventions.

And I say Durbin should be spat upon by every person who sees him for the rest of the year. That doesn't mean it'll happen...

In response, the Pentagon should begin building a new wing at Guantanamo, then name it after Durbin.

Yes, or maybe a new detention facility near Cicero...or Rockford...or Evanston...

I can think of lots of places in Illinois that'd be suitable for a new detention facility.

Then we'll see how the good people of Illinois feel about Dick Durbin.

He says despite the best efforts of American troops, Guantanamo has become a powerful, negative symbol around the world ..... thanks to his statements in June of 2005 in the well of the SINate!

''If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings,'' Durbin said then.

They should send the detainees (i.e. terrorists) to Cindy Sheehan's house, Gore's house, Dean's house, Kerry's house, Hillary's house, Bill's house, Sean Penn's house, Alec Baldwin's house, Pelosi's house, Boxer's house...the list is endless! I'm sure any one of those people would be happy to have houseguests.

This is absolutely THE BEST LINE OF BS today. There is no way you could convince me that Durbin had/has any interest in the facts concerning GITMO.

That's strange, he forgot to say where the prisoners should be held instead.

Maybe he thinks they should be put through the American criminal justice system. I suppose they could start in Illinois in the same county where Dick Durbin lives, and any who are not convicted of any criminal charges could be released into his hometown.

Does anyone know that Senator George Allen also went on this so-called fact finding mission? Here is what he had to say:

“The Active, Reserve and Guard troops, FBI and other interrogation experts, medical staff and the whole combined team at Guantanamo are performing an outstanding job protecting Americans,” said Senator Allen. “They are patiently and honorably detaining men who intend to harm Americans. Guantanamo is a transparent facility where our interrogators exceed the Geneva Convention requirements in their treatment of these enemies.

In fact the releasing of enemy combatants in the midst of an on-going war is unusual. I admire their honorable efforts to defend our freedom. As we develop legislation to abide by the recent United States Supreme Court decision, I believe that we can achieve security for Americans and abide by acceptable due process while gleaning information from these enemies. For our security, detainee operations in Guantanamo should continue with reasonable comportment of our actions with U.S. Laws and treaties.

Anyone who questions the importance of the Guantanamo Bay facilities should know most importantly that we are also deriving useful information from many of the detainees,” Allen said.

The MSM makes me sick. Their propaganda and manipulation of the "news" is the main reason why elections are so close in this country. Let there be a free, open, objective, balanced reporting of the news, and the Democrat Party would probably die as a political institution.

Durbinladen's heart again bleeding for America's enemies. They mutilate and decapitate our soldiers that fall into their hands, we hand wring about whether their soldiers that fall into ours are finding life pleasant enough. I give up. Let's just give them all our necks to allow them to chop off our heads now so these Dems. will be happy.

Since they'd need some kind of information out those they were about to house, maybe this exchange - received in my email - would help:

Concerned Citizen

A female liberal wrote a lot of letters to the White House complaining about the treatment of captive insurgents (terrorists) being held in Guantanamo Bay. She received back the following reply:

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C. 20016

Dear Concerned Citizen,
Thank you for your recent letter roundly criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Quaeda detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Our administration takes these matters seriously and your opinion was heard loud and clear here in Washington. You'll be pleased to learn that, thanks to the concerns of citizens like yourself, we are creating a new division of the Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "Liberals Accept Responsibility for Killers" program, or LARK for short. In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to place one terrorist under your personal care. Your personal detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence next Monday.

Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of complaint. It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers.

We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommended in your letter.

Although Ahmed is a sociopath and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help him overcome these character flaws. Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences. We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling.

Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We advise that you do not ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with you or your daughters (except sexually), since he views females as a subhuman form of property.

This is a particularly sensitive subject for him and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that he will recommend as more appropriate attire. I'm sure you will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the burka -- over time.

Just remember that it is all part of "respecting his culture and his religious beliefs" -- wasn't that how you put it?

Thanks again for your letter. We truly appreciate it when folks like you keep us informed of the proper way to do our job. You take good care of Ahmed - and remember...we'll be watching.

Good luck!
Cordially, your friend,
Don Rumsfeld
