MSNBC’s Star Carves Anti-Fox Niche[MSM Grasping at Straws Alert]
NY Times ^ | 7/11/06 | Bill Carter

Posted on 07/11/2006 7:47:03 PM PDT by Oshkalaboomboom

He is either the leading man of MSNBC or its leading agent provocateur, but Keith Olbermann has no problem embracing either role.

“You can’t spell momentum without Olbermann — or something like that,” he said in a telephone interview, with a typical sprinkle of wry in his voice.

The momentum reference related to MSNBC’s recent aggressive positioning of the program “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” as the centerpiece of this all-news cable network’s latest effort to become more competitive with Fox News Channel and CNN.

MSNBC revamped its prime-time schedule two weeks ago, shelving many of its prime-time hosts in favor of documentary-style programs but retaining “Countdown,” a program the network cites as its great growth story.

That growth, while coming from a base that Fox News would find disastrously puny, is demonstrable, especially among the group that is chiefly sold to news advertisers: people between the ages of 25 and 54. For the last quarter, Mr. Olbermann, who is 47, has seen his ratings in that group grow by more than 30 percent.

The growth has not been unfailingly steady, as competitors at Fox and CNN pointed out. They noted that Mr. Olbermann did better in February and March than he has since. Still, for the year, Mr. Olbermann has managed to climb past CNN into second place in the news channel competition at 8 p.m. among that 25-to-54 group. That qualifies as a feat for MSNBC, though Mr. Olbermann’s show remains little more than a dot in the rearview mirror of Fox News.

Even from that far back, he seems to have been able to honk his horn loud enough to raise hackles at Fox, which, Mr. Olbermann enthusiastically acknowledges, has been his precise intention as well as a useful marketing strategy.

Pretty pathetic to attempt to make anything on MSNBC look popular, their ratings makes Air America's numbers look good by comparison.

The MSM really loves giving free publicity and artificially propping up entities that cannot survive in a free market. Examples: All the coverage giving to the Ditzy Chicks (Time cover?) and front-section newspaper coverage, all about their new cruddy album. Then there is all the free press given to Al Whore and his 90 minutes of staring contemplatively off into the distance while quack scientific conclusions are given in voice over. Now the New York Times has this above the fold puff piece on the lowest rated Cable TV news show. Really great.

You mean he has .00001% ratings share instead of .00000001%?

Olbermann is an agit-prop narcissist with sports credentials. His audience could fit into a phone booth. It's 'news' for the frustrated and vindictive leftist who's looking for more mainstream credibility in their news than Comedy Central can provide.

Just when you think this clown has staked his turf with substantive or genuinely thoughtful commentary to offer, he throws paper into the air...."Olbermann style"!

Well, what the guy was trying to say is that MSNBC is the highest rated network at his home. Doesn't matter what the numbers are for MSNBC, as long as he controls the remote at his home, that network will be the highest rated.

He did get part of the story right when he said:

That qualifies as a feat for MSNBC, though Mr. Olbermann’s show remains little more than a dot in the rearview mirror of Fox News.

Yep, MSNBC is still a dot in comparison to the long paragraph for FOX.

I watched some MSNBC last night. OMG that channel sucks.

With sny remarks they want to regain popularity? I have an idea, DO YOUR HOMEWORK MSNBC!

"It's your accuracy in reporting stupid"

What helped FOX wasn't that they are flashy, that they seek scandals or conflict, ALL news does this. But FOX has a pattern of "getting it right" on issues. Unlike a Rather or CNN with "We are bogged down in Iraq", FOX actually has someone or some good people in the background doing their homework and ensuring the talking heads speak knowledgeably on a subject. While CNN was regurgitating BS and talking about how it's impossible to invade Afghanistan and we'll wait until Spring, FOX brought Balaqua on the air and got it "right", again. FOX like the others has it’s pretty faces, their sensationalism with Geraldo, but nonetheless they more frequently than not, get it right.
