He is either the leading man of MSNBC or its leading agent provocateur, but Keith Olbermann has no problem embracing either role.
You cant spell momentum without Olbermann or something like that, he said in a telephone interview, with a typical sprinkle of wry in his voice.
The momentum reference related to MSNBCs recent aggressive positioning of the program Countdown With Keith Olbermann as the centerpiece of this all-news cable networks latest effort to become more competitive with Fox News Channel and CNN.
MSNBC revamped its prime-time schedule two weeks ago, shelving many of its prime-time hosts in favor of documentary-style programs but retaining Countdown, a program the network cites as its great growth story.
That growth, while coming from a base that Fox News would find disastrously puny, is demonstrable, especially among the group that is chiefly sold to news advertisers: people between the ages of 25 and 54. For the last quarter, Mr. Olbermann, who is 47, has seen his ratings in that group grow by more than 30 percent.
The growth has not been unfailingly steady, as competitors at Fox and CNN pointed out. They noted that Mr. Olbermann did better in February and March than he has since. Still, for the year, Mr. Olbermann has managed to climb past CNN into second place in the news channel competition at 8 p.m. among that 25-to-54 group. That qualifies as a feat for MSNBC, though Mr. Olbermanns show remains little more than a dot in the rearview mirror of Fox News.
Even from that far back, he seems to have been able to honk his horn loud enough to raise hackles at Fox, which, Mr. Olbermann enthusiastically acknowledges, has been his precise intention as well as a useful marketing strategy.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA ... that article is funny
The MSM really loves giving free publicity and artificially propping up entities that cannot survive in a free market. Examples: All the coverage giving to the Ditzy Chicks (Time cover?) and front-section newspaper coverage, all about their new cruddy album. Then there is all the free press given to Al Whore and his 90 minutes of staring contemplatively off into the distance while quack scientific conclusions are given in voice over. Now the New York Times has this above the fold puff piece on the lowest rated Cable TV news show. Really great.
You mean he has .00001% ratings share instead of .00000001%?
All 12 of his viwers are pleased with this article.
You are close. Two commies in Madison, Wisconsin split the blanket, one got the TV the other got the blow up Ken doll.
" MSM really loves giving free publicity..."
Don't forget "Err" America.

While yet still tied for dead last with Chissy Mathews and all the other Liberal whores at MSNBC. The REPEAT of O'Rielly's show gets like 3 times as many viewer as Overtliar. No matter how you spin the numbers he and his cronies, like the NY Treason times are failing, miserable. June Ratings at the link above
anyone have the recent ratings of the individual shows??
And, according to the July 2006 ratings, O'Reilly has 1.8 share while Olberman draws a massive 0.3 share.

June Ratings here. July ratings not in yet
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
They must be smoking crack AGAIN!!!!
Perhaps this author needs more time with their "lifepartner"
HA AHA HAHA HA
tooooo funnny!!!!!
oberman! he is a first class unwatchable putz!
oh my.
this is just plain PATHETIC!!!!
The NYT is trying rehabilitate olberman, who did he perform a sexua act upon.
hmmm if the NYT likes olberman does this mean he is a homosexual?
Why suddenly are the only two I ever watch, Dan Abrams and Rita Cosby, gone? In fact, my July DISH t.v. guide doesn't even list MSNBC.
Recent ratings reveal that Keith Olberman and Chris Matthews can't muster 300,000 viewers nationwide. This guy that penned this article is smoking grass, or he is nuts!!! Olberman and Matthews have been dead on arrival for sometime!!!
Isn't it cute how some of the cable shows get their identity by how they measure up to FOX?
Gee, why would they want to be in that crowded neighborhood? They have to compete with the alphabets, CNN, and BBC International.
Took a look at your link to the June ratings and if I'm reading it correctly Olberman only 286,000 viewers. The guy is averaging less than 6,000 viewers per state.
Just when you think this clown has staked his turf with substantive or genuinely thoughtful commentary to offer, he throws paper into the air...."Olbermann style"!
Yeah...O'Reilly's days are surely numbered.
How long till the little o is back doing sports?
Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan on KSFO radio San Franciso have a bigger audience that this clown!
One small market and yet they swamp this fool in audience.
But with "Keith Olbermann" you can just about spell:
"The Monkey Brain"
Oh, is KO still on? I would have figured he'd be back in Bristol by now, begging to get back on the Big Show.
Olberman's ratings are lower than Scarborough and Matthews and they write this making him sound like the second coming.
Olbermann going back to ESPN would make that bling/sports channel even more unwatchable than it already is.
MSNBC - nearly as big as Air America......LOL !
Olbermann a star???!!!!??? I thought his show was on the morphine drip.
obviously the author was paid to write this article.
This is a blatent "pay off" article.
Too bad there is no payola for newspaper articles written as advertising.
Now this same blatent advertisment disguised as article is written all the time for left wing candidates like McCain, Hilary, or Kerry.
Do these guys also write the ads for penis enlargement patches?
Keith Doberman - DOLT - no IGNORANT DOLT.
there used to be a teevee sports host in Los Angeles back in the 20th century named Keith Oldermann. He actually got fired as a sports jock. Imagine that! I wonder if this guy is related...
I'd be interested in knowing how Glenn Beck's doing in his time slot(s).

Bill Carter of the New York Times.
I watched some MSNBC last night. OMG that channel sucks.
With sny remarks they want to regain popularity? I have an idea, DO YOUR HOMEWORK MSNBC!
"It's your accuracy in reporting stupid"
What helped FOX wasn't that they are flashy, that they seek scandals or conflict, ALL news does this. But FOX has a pattern of "getting it right" on issues. Unlike a Rather or CNN with "We are bogged down in Iraq", FOX actually has someone or some good people in the background doing their homework and ensuring the talking heads speak knowledgeably on a subject. While CNN was regurgitating BS and talking about how it's impossible to invade Afghanistan and we'll wait until Spring, FOX brought Balaqua on the air and got it "right", again. FOX like the others has its pretty faces, their sensationalism with Geraldo, but nonetheless they more frequently than not, get it right.
