A Question of Manliness
The Daily Mail ^ | 7/12/2006 | Martin Newland

Posted on 07/12/2006 10:39:54 AM PDT by Syco

There is, apparently, a resurgence of manliness in America. Superman has returned to the big screen and unshaven, testosterone-charged film stars such as Colin Farrell no longer look socially marginalised.

The A To Z Of Manliness, a compendium of tips on such matters as how to punch properly, is number two on the New York Times bestseller list, while a rash of academic books on the importance of real men have added fuel to the fire. The Boston Globe recently summed up the phenomenon: "We're in the middle of a Menaissance."

It is the atavistic desire to provide for those you love that forms the basic building block of manliness. It has existed since the physically stronger sex travelled the plains in search of meat for the family and it continued until the rise of feminism in the 1960s, a movement which would have us believe that men and women are biological and emotional clean slates, each possessed of identical and interchangeable faculties when it comes to work, life and family.

This is the lunacy that allows women fighter pilots to get aloft even though a man is more effective in combat because his stronger frame better protects him from G-forces. It is the feminist orthodoxy that renders my wife faintly embarrassed when she owns up to being a housewife. It is the notion that children do not need fathers.

This is a GREAT article. Read it in it's entirety. I don't really fully agree with his view of modern day America, but it's hard to argue that we're not a more "manly" nation than just about anywhere in Europe.

As a man in his mid-thirties who is trying to raise three young boys I pray that his general theory of a "Menaissance" is correct. Our culture has suffered for decades under the unrealistic and suffocating theories of radical feminism and it has led to a breakdown of male responsibilty in large sectors of our culture.

Perhaps men and women should be seen as political equals but that doesn't mean that we're the SAME. Men are better at some things than women! Women are better at some things than men! Any honest observer of humanity could tell you this if they'd take off the politically correct blinders.

As a man, I know more and more other guys who are slowly saying enough is enough. We're angry and we're beginning to demand changes. We love our wives and we don't blame women in general. We blame the institutions (our churches, schools, government, and media) that have cemented the worst of radical feminism in our culture. We're no longer willing to allow those institutions to tell us how to live and how to raise our families.

As one example, I meet with a group of men from my church every other Monday for a men's small group. Our church is dominated by a simpering metrosexual pastor (who hails from Europe) who has dismantled every mens ministry opportunity in our congregation over the past three years while simultaneously expanding an already robust womens ministry. This despite the fact that I, and several other men, have volunteered to take the ball and run with it to breathe new life into our mens ministries. All of the guys (save one) in my group are fed up, and we're ready to walk. We're not leaving Christianity or the church in general, but we are looking for a new church home where we will be allowed to be men.

I know that this is sort of a rant and I apologize, but I'm tired of being told that I'm wrong for wanting to be a MAN. Not a macho idiot, but a MAN! A man who wants to love and protect his wife and raise up a strong family. I simply thought that this article was well written and offers a glimpse of hope for men and manliness on this side of the Atlantic. I do feel sorry for the poor Brits though.

I like your post Syco. Feminist, many years ago, went from wanting to be able to do more in society to now wanting to have their cake and eat it too. Being manly is a good thing. Being manly doesn't mean that you go around picking on people and acting like a jerk. But that is how feminists today would have us believe. Being manly is just giving in to your natural way of behaving as a man. Of course there is the violent and angry side of being a man but that's what your father is there for, to teach you how to be responsible and deal with the aggression.

Get together with the rest of the congregation, put up a petion to remove the pastor and take a vote. Take your church back.

Or maybe you could have a couple o' guys "talk" to him and beat the crap out of him.

We're in the middle of a Menaissance

That's the gayest thing I've heard since they coined the term "metrosexual."

I was never a metrosexual and never cared for the feminine look. To this day, I still wear a beard. I don't care much for the clean shaven look. Let men be men. That's the thing I'm more sort of into and I don't need a Drive By Media article to tell me the girly man look is passe. It was never in fashion for me. Ho hum.

(The Palestinian terrorist regime is the crisis and Israel's fist is the answer.)

REAL MEN don't act impulsively, they plan things out. An unfortunate accident could perhaps befall the pastor.

Menaissance sounds as if it were derived from menstruation.

I haven't read the article yet, but may I just say on behalf of the Women of the United States: THANK GOD!

Bad example.

If you want to show your sons what real men ought to be, tell them about Rick Rescorla.

Exactly! Feminists want men to feel guilty for being men. They've had the bullhorn for a long time and they have told us all that being a man means that you're a jerk, a caveman, or a bully. That's not the case. CS Lewis, George Washington, Ronald Reagan, St. Paul. These are my heroes. These are men! These guys were NOT jerks, or bullies, or cavemen. They were men who understood that to BE a man meant taking responsibilty and being willing to sacrifice for your family and your community.

I love it when liberals make the obvious seem foreign and in need of study. When common sense human nature is a surprise and news that must be reported.

MANLINESS

Something that just can not be faked. Either you have it or you don't.

Metrosexuals? Nice try, move along.

Okay, given! Still, despite his gay term he's got a pretty good point.
