GAZA, July 12 The expansion of the Gaza crisis into southern Lebanon, confronting Israel with a conflict on its northern and southern borders, has demonstrated that the central issue at stake is regional, not local.

Khaled Meshal, the leader of Hamass political bureau, is in Syria and is said to be backed by Iran.
For Israel the issue is not simply the Palestinians and their actions, including the rocket fire into Israel. It is the broader problem of radical Islam of Hamas, as a part of the regional Muslim Brotherhood, and of Iran, a serious regional power with considerable influence on Syria, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and the military wing of Hamas.
While Israel and the United States still hope that Hamas, which is a largely homegrown Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, will respond to the responsibilities of elected leadership and moderate its rejection of Israel to bring a better life to its people, they have no such hopes for Iran.
Irans president has famously denied the Holocaust and made countless provocative statements about Israel. But even before his election, Iran committed itself to undermining any prospect of real peace between Israel and the Palestinians through proxy forces like Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad.

What a keen grasp of the obvious!
Regional?!!! Get a clue NY Times, it's Worldwide.
Well, seeing that this is from the NYT, I'm wondering what they are up to, printing the facts and all.
After the first sentence, I thought "well duh!!"
Sorry, but I just can't stand anyone from the times.
duh... how about the reach of Iran into Iraq, the presence of Iranians at No Korean missile launch, beyond its sponsorship of Syria, Hezbollah and financing of Hamas...we're in this with Israel. welcome to our world, NYTimes and to the 21st century.
If we all sit here on this side of the Atlantic and condemn Israel, maybe the Muslims will like us?
"...the central issue at stake is regional, not local."
Problem could be taken care of 1, 2, 3:
One bomb for Syria
One bomb for Lebanon
One bomb for Iran
Nothing from the NYT is valid.
At least they are moving toward the right direction.
The problem is World Wide, not simply regional. We have Iran directly involved, and they are directly involved with North Korea in developing an ICBM.
Wheels within wheels...

Yes, it is suspicious when that happens, isn't it... It can't be taken at face value, they must have something up their sleeve...
Islam's war against the west is much more than a "regional crisis".
What are they smoking at the NYT?
Let's not forget Venezuela.
I'll take that assessment to be partly becuase of (unmentioned in the article) our successes in Iraq. The more we do there, the more the rest of the hive gets riled.
It's never really been Israel vs. the Palestinians. The Palestinians have been pawns in much bigger politics since at least the 1920s....
