WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Murtha's Republican opponent raised thousands of dollars online in June, but still significantly trailed the 10-term incumbent in fundraising.

Murtha, a decorated Vietnam War veteran from western Pennsylvania who has become the face of the movement opposing the Iraq war, raised $621,367 in the quarter that ended June 30, according to his Federal Election Commission filing.

His opponent, Washington County commissioner Diana Irey, raised $229,846, according to her campaign.

Murtha has $1.6 million in cash, while Irey has $159,138 in cash.

Irey, who has criticized Murtha's stance on the Iraq war, raised more than $117,000 in cash online in June, said Bill Pascoe, a campaign spokesman.

I think everyone should send in whatever they can afford. Everyone can spare 5 dollars, and thousands of people sending that amount in can make a huge difference.

I agree completely, but we all know the reality. Heck, we can't even finish off this FReepathon, which everyone has a stake in. So getting folks to pony up for a PA congressional race, even one involving a treasonous blowhard, doesn't come easy.

Having said that, I am still encouraged by the grass-roots response to Ms. Irey's campaign from FR and the milblogs.

Well, same thing with the Freepathon. People need to donate small amounts if they can't do $50. A lot of people kicking in 5 bucks makes a difference.

If 1000 folks kicked in $5, that would be $50,000.

A ot of people don't donate because they think their small donation won't make a difference. I think people need to kick in what they can, and the numbers will add up.
