NEWPORT NEWS -- A Williamsburg man being robbed by three people shot and killed one of his attackers and injured another, police said Friday.
Morris L. Brown, 22, had just dropped off a friend at Heritage Trace apartments about 1:30 a.m. Friday when two people approached him and asked for drugs, said Lou Thurston, a spokesman for the Newport News Police Department.
When Brown responded that he didn't have any drugs, the two said they were robbing him. A third person then approached him from behind, Thurston said.
The two men in front of Brown started beating him, while the third person held him. The three stole Brown's keys, cell phone and wallet and started to walk away, Thurston said. The man who approached Brown from behind then pointed a handgun at Brown.
But Brown fired his own weapon into the group and hit Michael M. Highsmith, 22, of Newport News in the arm.
A 32-year-old man was shot several times in the torso and later died at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Thurston said. His name was not released because relatives had not yet been notified.
The man who pulled the gun on Brown fled the scene, and police aren't sure if he was injured, Thurston said. Highsmith was charged with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police were searching for the third suspect Friday afternoon.

Nice shot.
Highsmith should be charged with capital murder in the death of his accomplice.
He should have popped the one with the gun first.
Something isnt right about this story
proper gun control...
Excellent point!
Incidents like this is why I carry a 9 mm.
Ping!
Good start to the evening ping
I'm a sentimental sucker for happy endings.
Well, yeah, but what about the other two ?
Maybe they can charge him with not killing the other two ... ;)
Tomorrow afternoon I make my attempt to get a weapon permit from the DC police. I recently moved here and found out that in this liberal utopia you are not even allowed to own a weapon IN YOUR OWN HOME. I'm sure that has absolutely nothing to do with the string of murders committed in this city (13 this month) that has prompted the Police Chief to declare a police emergency.
Good Luck.

Virginia is nice, this time of year.
FWIW.
They make the dead robber sound like an innocent bystander. Just another victim of Gun Violence, don'tcha know...
A 32-year-old man indeed! Which 32-year-old man?
I'd expect that to happen, eventually. I'm under the impression that Virginia has such a statute.
If we vanish guns from society, gun violence will go away.
Defended himself with a gun? Oh forget it, this guy will do hard time and will be paying the robbers off for the rest of his life. Oh wait, I thought this happened in New York city. Never mind.
