DailyTech previously reported AMD was planning a major CPU price cut a couple days after Intel ships Core 2 Duo Conroe processors. Those expecting AMD to announce another price cut in time for the holiday season will be disappointed. DailyTech has received an updated price list for October 23rd, 2006 that shows AMD has no plans to reduce prices on its Athlon 64 and Sempron desktop product lineups anytime soon. Pricing on Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 X2 EE and Sempron will stay the same well into 2007 which may disappoint users expecting a sub-$100 dual-core AMD offering in time for the holidays to compete with Intel's $95 Pentium D 805.
The upcoming July 24th, 2006 price cut is the only planned price cut for quite a while. There’s no word on other upcoming price cuts yet, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see AMD cut prices when Brisbane production ramps up. DailyTech has previously reported on AMD’s upcoming Socket AM2 motherboard forward compatibility with Socket AM3 CPUs, upcoming AMD K8L architecture, AMD’s June 2006 product roadmap and upcoming 65nm improvements too. AMD has also been aggressively discontinuing Socket 939 and 754 products including dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and 4600+ models.

One thing AMD has done well recently is stay ahead of Intel in product development, allowing them the ability to battle Intel at the register.

It doesn't have a superior product anymore... Intel is the new King... where have you been? Its called Conroe(Core2Duo)
thats usually what happens to me! but this time i got lucky and caught it just right... im still running a A64 3500+ that i've had for over a year.

That really depends on which market segment you look at. Intel does have a faster home/office/single socket cpu but AMD still has better products in the multi-socket range.
I don't see Cray switching to Intel anytime soon.
How much does that 23 inch monitor cost? And what is the max resolution on it?

Conclusion
It took a few years, which is normal for any architecture redesign, but we feel Intel has finally created a product that is not just competitive to the AMD Opteron. Woodcrest outperforms all of the competition in 2-way configurations, and it does so with lower power consumption. This combination leads to better Performance/Watt in all tested situations. Woodcrest not only outperforms it's predecessor by over 100% in Performance/Watt, but it outperforms Opteron by as much as 60% in Performance/Watt. In terms of straight performance the Woodcrest led the way by anywhere from 18 to 35% at higher system loads. We feel that Intel has the vision to continue this trend, as they have a clear roadmap for next year and beyond. Expect to see even further gains in 2007. How those parts will compete with future AMD products is unknown, but we have competition and that is always good for the consumer.

I've built nearly a dozen Shuttles (alas for others). I love every one of them, going back to the Athlon 2500 days, and dual onboard video. My most recent one included a Raptor drive and a SATA DVD burner. Windows installed in about ten minutes and boots from power off in 15 seconds.
In addition to being cute, they are much easier than mid-tower cases to assemble and upgrade. Maybe hard to believe, but true.

AMD’s desktop and laptop processors will not compete well on price with Intel as the new Core Duo simply wipes the floor with Athlon 64. A big major problem for AMD is that there heavily subsidized Fab in Dresden, Germany which was suppose manufacture chips at 65nm is late to the game for whatever reason. Perhaps they could get there act together but the first of 2007 but even then they still will not be able to match Intel’s Core Duo. Looks like AMD is resorting to the old Jerry Sander’s philosophy, “best bang for the buck” which almost drove them to bankruptcy. . Looks like history is about to repeat.

OR upgrade, CPU, Memory(I current have DDR not DDR2) and motherboard(remember Intels motherboards aren't cheep)...
We shall see. The folks paying big bucks for the latest chips are mostly gamers, and they are still buying single core chips, because most games don't perform better on dual core.
Personally, I look more toward the bottom of the 64-bit line. I recently built three Shuttles with AMD3200s and a gig of memory for about $400 each.

I will try. You have an old computer with an old mother board. It most likely is not upgradable to any significant extent due to limitations of the older mother board to take the more modern CPU designs. This is just conjecture on my part based on what you said.
AMD is just announcing a LARGE price cut in its mainline CPUs. If you have/had a mother board that would support one of these newer CPUs, you could take advantage of the enhanced processing power of them. If your mother board is older, I would advise you to "gut it" and replace it with an up-to-date design and take advantage of the price decrease on these new CPUs.

“I look more toward the bottom of the 64-bit line.” Well if that is what you want I am sure you will be buying them bargain basement in the future. Fact is AMD is starting to feel the competition as they just downgraded estimates for the current quarter.
As far as game computers go, the benchmarks reported around the web Core Duo destroys the Athlon’s best in game benchmarks. Frankly I am glad to see company like Intel with chip fabs in the USA do well especially against a company that manufactures all its chips in Germany.
in your situation, and for everyone this news tells everyone to wait a a few weeks to upgrade to let the price cuts to take effect... In your personal situation you will need pretty much a total upgrade... The new Intel Core2Duo(Conroe) is the king, BUT AMD X2 cpu's are still a good buy(And AMD Athlon64's are still good for a budget computer)... If building OR buying a new system I personally would suggest the Intel Core2Duo E6600 2.4GHZ, IF you already have a Socket939 processor and your motherboard supports the AMD X2 I would suggest buying one of those after the price cuts take place... :)

The megahertz war is over and its now about instructions per clock... The Intel E6600 2.4GHZ is faster than the Athlon FX62 and will cost $316...

Like I said the Intel E6600 2.4GHZ is FASTER than ANYTHING AMD currently has on the market and its only going to be $316... I build my own systems, Dell and all the others will have the new Intel processors soon... (in a few weeks)

Both AMD and Intel have fabs located in the USA as well as all over the planet.

I never had a problem with viruses... Just keep your anti-virus and spyware definitions up to date and dont open spam e-mails and you should be good to go. :)
Both the AMD Fx62 and Core2Duo seem to push current video cards to their limit, making the video card the speed bottleneck....
a better benchmark comparison for Core2Dou and AMD is with multimedia and other applications that use CPU power...
GHZ in and of itself means nothing... instructions per clock cycle is what matters... Why is an AMD Athlon 2.2GHZ faster than a 3.2GHZ Pentium? Answer: the AThlon has MORE instructions per clock cycle, the Athlon does more work per megahertz, The NEW INTEL CORE2DUO has increased their instructions per clock cycle... :)(they have adopted AMD's strategy)
So Intel has caught up with AMD by copying their 64 bit instruction set and copying their architecture.
But AMD has basically been milking three year year old technology, and probably not standing still in R&D.
By the way, I notice that current motherboards will not boot the Duo. Too bad.
