Notes from Conspiracy HQ
Fort Worth Star-Telegram ^ | 7/18/2006 | Bud Kennedy

Some words just don't go together. For example, county commissioner and global conspiracy.

If I heard that some dirty commies were plotting to overthrow our government, the first place I'd check would not be under the Tarrant County Courthouse dome. Most of our county officials would be lucky to overthrow a domino table.

But there on the Web is Commissioner Glen Whitley's name in black and white, on loony extremist political pages from both the right and left wings, blaming him for promoting a Texas tollway that is portrayed as part of a sinister plot to merge Canada, Mexico and the United States into a "North American Union."

Now, Whitley is not exactly your rebel-leader type. He's a Hurst Republican and an accountant. Because he does not have a Democratic opponent on the November ballot, Whitley is the Tarrant County judge-in-waiting to succeed Tom Vandergriff in the courthouse's highest office.

The fantasy of the TTC and a "secret plot" has been heavily promoted by anti-immigration Web sites, mostly in articles by a writer who is -- maybe not coincidentally -- also peddling a new book supporting the anti-immigration Minuteman Project.

"We as a nation have decided that we want to shop at Wal-Mart. We want the cheapest goods we can buy. Those goods are going to come from outside the U.S. and maybe through Mexico -- and to keep the economy growing, we've got to keep the I-35 corridor open."

Most of our county officials would be lucky to overthrow a domino table.

Perhaps those who are vehemently opposed to the proposed road have a similarly low opinion of this county commissioner's capacity, and thus reasonably conclude that he doesn't have a full grasp of the project's ramifications.

Please note that I'm not taking any position one way or the other about the proposed road -- I don't know enough about it. But I think most of the productive citizens of this nation, not just "loony extremists", harbor a well-founded concern that we have lost control of our borders, and the notion that any aspect of the issue is being influenced by less than competent politicians is not comforting.

Most of those who came to the meeting discussing the TTC last night in Fort Worth supported the road, but opposed the route, since it would bypass Ft.Worth entirely.

No one who opposes this corridor seems to have any useful suggestions for any alternative.

They are the usual "'aginners", who oppose just about everything that accommodates economic growth.

I have an alternative:

1. Don't build the corridor
2. Tell the Mexicans they may not have a "port" in Kansas City
3. Scrap NAFTA

I hope poor little America can survive economically without the help of those twin powerhouses, Mexico and Canada.

According to another FReeper, virtually every county in Texas that will be affected by the TTC has voted it down but, miraculously, approval came through. How and from where??

Also, with this article coming from the Fort Worth Startle-gram, their opinions are highly suspect and their attempt to lampoon right-wing bloggers who have questioned the purpose of the TTC and been able to "connect the dots" to prove that everything the Startle-gram lampoons is valid, pretty much discredits them as a valid resource on this issue.

Where did you see that? I'm not aware that counties got to vote on this. It is a state initiative, approved by the Texas Legislature.

This the soon-to-be County Judge talking, and he's right. Attempts to spin this highway into some nefarious blurring of borders, of dissolution of national sovereignty is the talk of conspiracy kooks.

There is no North American Union except to the extent that all three countries are going to cooperate on trade. There are no treaties, no legislation, no amendments, no legally-binding agreements.

The black helicopter crowd has, with the help of Jerome Corsi (who is selling a book) and Lou Dobbs (who knows his audience well), blown this entirely out of proportion.

You folks really ought to be embarrassed.

Sorry that you ostriches can't deal with the fact that the rest of us can connect the dots. Take the TTC and the SPP (http://www.spp.gov/) and combine them with Bush's steadfast refusal to control the borders. All of those things together not only produce smoke, they also produce fire.

The only dots you're connecting are those floating around in your head. You've built an elaborate and convoluted fantasy around a road and a gentleman's trade agreement. No matter how many different people tell you otherwise, you won't be convinced.

Everything done here has been public and above board. You can read the minutes of the Bush-Fox-Harper meeting in the Washington Post. Nobody's trying to pull a fast one on you. They really aren't.

Take that back. Somebody is. His name is Jerome Corsi, and it is in his interest to get you fired up against the non-existent NAU.

He's got a book to sell.

Let me help you out with a few facts. 1) quoting the WaPo as a source instantaneously discredits your arguments. These people are leftist agents and wouldn't print the truth . . . . . even if it were true. 2) I don't claim that anyone is trying to pull a fast one, I'm telling you that Bush, a known globalist, is working with Fox and Harper (new Canadian PM) to create an EU-style arrangement in the western hemisphere. This arrangenment will start with the union of the US, Canada and Mexico, and will eventually extend into S. America. 3) I don't know who Jerome Corsi is and don't know anything about a book he is trying to sell.

You can be as Egyptian as you like, but several other people have finally connected the same dots that I have and come to the same conclusion. This isn't conspiracy theory, it is the only thing that makes sense in this situation. Bush's refusal to enforce the southern border, proceeding with a 1/4 mile wide highway that is unneeded from the Texas-Mexican border to the Oklahoma state line and, from there, it divides into four highways that terminate at the Canadian border. Offer another explanation for this that makes sense, I'll be happy to look at it. But, I think you're going to have to do a LOT of work to convince me that there is a rational, reasonable alternative reason for the TTC and the Mexican shipping port that is planned for Kansas City.

The TTC is a state project, not a federal one.

If you have driven I-35 between Hillsboro and San Antonio lately, you would not see another highway as "unnecessary."

Aren't there four other interstates that terminate at the Canadian border now? I don't get how anything is changed.

The port in Kansas City is no different from the port at Alliance, north of Fort Worth. Did you know that Alliance is an international trading hub?

Now, go off and develop a conspiracy theory about Alliance.

I've logged many a mile on I-35, from Laredo to the OK state line, I'm very familiar with all of its characteristics. The TTC is not needed. At best, I-35 is in need of some maintenance and upgrading in places, but it doesn't need to be replaced with a highway 1/4 mile wide.

The port in Kansas is VERY different from Alliance. This port will, essentially, be considered a Mexican state operation.

I notice that you didn't respond to my request to provide a more rational, reasonable alternative to the "conspiracy" theory. You can't, can you??

You're not in touch with reality. I-35 will be impassable, in five years, if something is not done now.

I did, but kooks can't understand anything but kook.

I google the author of this piece and not surprisingly, he's a flaming liberal. Here's a dead giveaway...

supporting the anti-immigration Minuteman Project

the only people who don't qualify immigration with the term "illegal" are liberals and border pu$$ies.

From the article: "She said something about the Trans Texas Corridor 'tearing down the border,' Whitey remembered. 'I told her we're not trying to tear down any border. We're just trying to get trucks off I-35.'"
