Detroit clerk to purge 55,000 names from voter rolls

DETROIT (AP) — The city clerk plans to purge the names of nearly 55,000 dead people and those who no longer live in the city from voting rolls as part of an effort to ensure integrity in elections.

Clerk Janice Winfrey bought lists of deaths from the state and city health department. Then she moved to eliminate the names of people who hadn't cast a ballot since before the 2002 election and who had been mailed voter card registration renewal forms that were returned as undeliverable.

Already the names of about 33,000 deceased voters have been removed, The Detroit News reported Tuesday. The rest can be removed after the August primary. Winfrey estimates another 40,000 names can be removed under a similar process in 2008.

Winfrey was elected in November. She unseated Jackie L. Currie, who had held the post since 1994 and was embroiled in a federal probe of her handling of absentee ballots.

Last year, the city had 637,000 registered voters, a figure critics say had to be wrong since according to census figures, Detroit only had 630,000 people 18 or older who were eligible to vote.

In February, the newspaper published a review of ballots cast in the November election that showed many were cast under the names of people who have died, were serving time in prison or did not live in the city.

And was the previous register a .... (dramatic pause) ... democrat, perhaps?

...

Bookmarked for ref. Good news, finally.

I propose that on Jan 1st every year ending in zero, ALL VOTERS be sent a notice that they will be purged and will require re-register to vote. Come Feb 1st, wipe it all out and start over.

I would also like to see voter ID with the registration.

It's about time that this situation has begun to be addressed. With the amount of technology available today, to have our votes diluted down by massive voter fraud is inexcusable.

Michigan: absentee ballot campaign questioned in Detroit
AP reports: Allegations of racism, biased judges and improprieties that include dead people on the voter roll have surfaced in the weeks before Tuesday's hotly contested city election.

On the eve of the vote, the focus was on City Clerk Jackie Currie and her "Project Vote" program, which sends ambassadors to help the elderly and disabled fill out absentee ballots.

Last week, a judge ordered state and Wayne County election officials to oversee absentee voting after ruling that Currie has been breaking state law in how she handles absentee ballots and supervises the ambassadors.

In late October, The Detroit News reported that Currie's handling of absentee ballots was questionable. The newspaper found that people cast ballots even though their addresses were abandoned nursing homes or in one case, a vacant lot. -- mlive.com: NewsFlash - Allegations of election fraud, racism surface in days before Detroit election

How many of these people voted recently?

Probably none of them, contrary to rumors spread by Republican Party campaign workers spreading their propoganda via the Drudge Report. The Republicans never identified by name the dead persons who supposedly voted in Philadelphia according to a report they filtered through Drudge early on election day 2004.

If you factor out the pulse-challenged voters in 2004, Kerry's take is more like 45%. The city of Milwaukee purged a 150,000 voters who may have voted in 2004, who were non-existent. Here in STL, Polls were kept open later than allowed when algore was projected to lose. Bottom line-the dems, lacking message, ability, and likeability, have to cheat in elections...

Yes, apparently she had to buy the lists. Why one government agency should have to pay for mere information from another government agency puzzles me.

In fact, death lists should be automatically forwarded to the appropriate boards of elections.
