A man was arrested in Canada on suspicion of threatening the sheriff of Arizona's most populous county and his family, authorities said.
Canadian authorities took Matthew Carl Sanderson, 37, into custody Friday although he since has been released.
A spokeswoman for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said detectives were going to sift through Sanderson's computer and other evidence obtained in a search of his Toronto home to determine his motive, what charges to bring and whether he should be extradited to Arizona or prosecuted in Canada.
The threat came in an e-mail June 2 through the sheriff's Web site, said spokeswoman Lisa Allen.
The e-mail reportedly said Arpaio and his family were targeted for death because of his "flagrant disregard for basic human rights and flippant attitude towards the life of another American."
Arpaio has made national headlines in past years for having female chain gangs and forcing jail inmates to wear pink underwear.
Recently, he has come under fire from immigrant-rights activists who call him heartless for arresting illegal immigrants under Arizona's new smuggling law.
It's not smart to mess with Sheriff Joe; no matter where you are.
Just don't tug on superman's cape.
I think Matt's gonna be "pretty in pink" to the lifers.
Isn't it weird how left-wing wackos never realize how self-contradictory they are?
That Sherif is something else. Saw him on the history channel I think, funny as hell. It might have been smartly edited, but he was yucking it up with the inmates.
Nope that's really him -- until you cross him then he's harder than Cuban Ironwood.
Arpaio may not be perfect, but he's one of the best there is. I wonder what it's like being one of his deputies.
Having had my e-mail account spoofed, I think I'll wait awhile before assuming the guy's guilty.
I bet this guy is going to hate wearing pink underwear in 120 degree heat, while eating a green baloney sandwich.
Actually, I think they believe that dignity is a basic human right, but life is not. So, if he killed someone in a dignified way, that would be ok....

Hence their stance on abortion.
They're just bizarre.
It's because their entire intellectual life consists of cliches. Bumper stickers.
Picture a little electric train track, with little toy train cars, that runs round and round and round. Now picture, on each toy car, a little plaque with a cliche printed on it. Bush = Hitler. Bush Must Go. War Is Not the Answer. Hate Is Not a Family Value. Round and round the little train runs.
You are now visualizing the internal intellectual life of a typical liberal.
Bizarre indeed.

Actually, I know several deputies over in Maracopa County ... I talk to them every time I go to gun shows in that county ... most of the ones I talk to agree ... Joe usually does the right thing ... but for all the wrong reasons ... but not a one would want to work any where else ... :)
