ALBANY - GOP Senate candidate John Spencer has hopped out to his biggest lead yet over rival Kathleen (KT) McFarland, but a new poll finds many Republicans aren't embracing either one of them.
Spencer, former mayor of Yonkers, drew the backing of 36% of Republicans, leaving McFarland in the dust at 15%, according to the poll released yesterday by Marist College and WNBC.
But 49% of Republican voters remain undecided with less than two months to go to the primary election that will determine which of the two will face Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) in November.
In May, a Marist poll had Spencer ahead of McFarland, 26% to 14%.
"John Spencer has the money, the message and the momentum," said the candidate's spokesman, Rob Ryan. "We're going to beat KT McFarland in the primary and we're going to go on to run against Hillary Clinton in November.
In the race for attorney general, Democratic front-runner Andrew Cuomo topped Republican Jeanine Pirro, 51%-37%, the survey found.
In his party's primary, Cuomo held a double-digit lead over rival Mark Green, 40%-25%, the poll showed.
But the poll also indicated that if Green can overtake Cuomo, he would be a strong contender in the main event, as he topped Pirro, 49%-35%.
36% of Republicans
Not good when even the Republicans are not convinced. Hillary is unfortunately a shoe in. I guess him getting his name out there will do some good. Perhaps only Rudy could have landed her where she belongs...out!!!
