The United States is not fighting a war against terrorism so much as a war against Islamic fascism, U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said Thursday. But a spokesman for the Council on American Islamic Relations said Santorum's argument only empowers "extremists."
Days after Sept. 11, 2001, President George W. Bush announced that the United States would fight a war against terrorism, starting with Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda and the group's political benefactors - Afghanistan's Taliban government. But on Thursday, Santorum said labeling the conflict a war against terrorism was politically "safe and misleading."
"Some say we're fighting a war on terror. That's like saying World War II was a war on blitzkrieg. Terror, like blitzkrieg is a tactic of war, used by our enemy," said Santorum at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. "It is not the enemy.
"In World War II we fought Nazism and Japanese imperialism. Today, we are fighting against Islamic fascism," he said.

I'm glad some pol had the cojones to call a spade an effing shovel! Of course CAIR has their panties in a wad - they can go pound sand!
Islam/Global Jihad Ping !
Anarchist socialists are also the enemy. And they make up the bulk of the homeland anti-war movement.
They haven't held a riot, er protest in awhile.
If you don't identify your enemy you will never defeat them.
A rare thing - a politco gets it and nails it! Ping!
Senator Santorum tells it like it t-i-s!
It's not so much as a time frame thing (sooner before it is too late) as it is a now or never thing. The political ideology must be stamped out as Hitler's Thousand Year Nazi Reign was.
If vestiges of this evil political ideology are allowed to remain, it could rise up again in 20, 50, 100 years.
No tolerance for it in prisons. No tolerance for it on campuses. No tolerance for it in mosques.
Peaceful muslims must purge the supremacist political ideology from their ranks.
Now, now...
We can't go around offending our enemies.
It just wouldn't do.
Just the name "Council on American Islamic Relations" indicates a person cannot be a Mohammedan and an American.
"In World War II we fought Nazism and Japanese imperialism. Today, we are fighting against Islamic fascism," he said.
WOOOOEEEE!!! The media's going to be apoplectic. But they're in something of a bind. People will agree with Rick if they're presented with his statement. So instead, the media will denounce him as an "extremist" without presenting his statement, or they'll denounce him as an extremist while caricaturing his statement.
Nice to hear a high profile politician tell it like it is... FIVE YEARS after 9/11.
I'm sure that privately Bush feels the same way. I just wish he had the nards to step up to a microphone and tell the truth.
I am going to miss Rick being in the Senate.
Bush doesn't want to alienate our Muslim allies such as Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, etc...
But, it's NOT against "Christian Extremists", Corey. It's against Muslim Extremists. If the Christians act up, they'll get slapped down. God knows our govt had not problem with going after the militias, whether they were doing anything illegal or not.
Not since, what was it, May when they got all the illegals out in the streets. Still waiting for the other shoe to drop on that.
Even my liberal Democrat husband thought that was a great speech! Of course, he still won't vote for Santorum. And the Inquirer buried it on page 3.
Bush has said it, in a speech on Veterans Day '05. Used the term "Islamofascism" for the first time publicly (to my knowledge). Made it very clear.
In my book, there's not a lot of difference between the two. Some are terrorists and the others hide and watch.
Jim (if you are listening), with all due respect, Senator Rick has a point which is now proven by lots of worldwide outrages since 2001 (Madrid, London, Mumbai, Kashmir, Beslan, Nigeria, France, Montreal, Southern Thailand, Bali), that show us clearly we ARE NOT IN A WAR ON TERROR, we are in a WAR ON ISLAMOFASCISM.
Those in Madrid, London, Mumbai, Kahsmir, Beslan, Nigeria, France, Montreal, Southern Thailand, Bali, know it....
In our postings and conversations at work and with family, we should start to avoid this "WOT", and "bringing the terrorists to justice" vague nonsense, which has its roots in political correctness, i.e. that liberal mental sickness which doesn't allow us to call something what it clearly is (and which can infect Republican Administrations as well).
Santourum just got a boost in my book.
All he needs to do is abandon Arlen Specter, and he would skyrocket in the polls.
