Why Can't My Liberal Friends Talk Politics
July 21, 2006 | jhw61

Posted on 07/21/2006 5:12:21 PM PDT by jhw61

Not once since Hizbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, killed a young Israeli citizen have my liberal friends mentioned once in office conversation. Today I felt totally shut up when one of my co-workers made a comment about "my governor, Mitt Romney" and new benefit rules for MassHealth. I started to respond and was shut down by another co-worker who said O.k. let's not talk politics. I said "You democrates never want to talk politics." It's so frustrating. Day after day after I spend my evenings here on FR, my liberal co-workers talk about the next pair of curtains they are going to buy, wow, those Red Sox are so hot, etc.,...I'm surrounded by what I would say are people who really don't care about what goes on around them, unaware how what goes on in the world should affect them. My four fellow female co-workers never want to Discuss anything. Their feeling is people should be able to believe what they want, worship who they want and that's it. What is wrong with me. Why do I feel so isolated? Yes, I live in liberal Massachusetts and that should be the answer right there but I could use some encouraging comments. Thank you for considering my thread my wondersul fellow Freepers. There has to more to life than talking about curtains and paint doesn't there?

In these times, everyone's afraid of getting into political dust-ups at the water cooler.

Do you belong to a USDA-approved ethinc minority? It's practically a crime to argue with such.

I don't talk about politics at the office. There are several liberals there, and I have to work with them on technical stuff. If I talked politics with them, we'd end up despising each other openly, and cooperation on other projects for work would suffer. There is no point in even trying to reason with modern liberals.

your first problem is where you live... I mean these are the same people who reelect the swimmer and scary Kerry year after year. Don't feel isolated. I work with a whole bunch of blue stater's who daily attack the way the government is run. The Israel problem is something they don't talk about. Why because their bleeding hearts are with the terrorists. I fortunately have facts provided by this site and others to bludgeon them with. I get great joy from shutting them down. Politics in the work place can be bloody. be glad you don't have to deal with it. And be glad you have FRiends of FR

When you know (or at least believe) the deck is stacked and the deal is not looking good for you, that tends to cut conversation short.

Egos, particularly liberal egos, are often easily bruised.

Exactly my sentiments CC.

The RATs can't really tell us the truth, that they hate America, and it's America's fault for every problem in the world. They cannot afford to betray their ignorance, stupidity, and generic hatred for everything American, including Israel.

RATs are too emotionally scarred to have an intelligent conversation.

They know their positions are morally bankrupt
ergo their reticence to argue their untenable position.

Your best bet is probably not to push it. When the opportunity comes up chime in then. They probably know that you are a thinking person rather than an emotional basket case and that may scare them.

Between my friends/coworkers we also have a "no politics" rule also. Our debates were (are) loud and very very heated. The like minds get together and talk in our own little group but on occasion we find a common ground and talk. Here in Texas there are plenty of conservatives to go around. I feel for you in the peoples republic of Mass.
Freep is the best, but be warned don't make fun of Apple computers. Some folks are sensitive...

Because they have taken that most corrupting of fairy tales from their youth and brought it into adulthood.

That fairy tale is: Listen to your heart, not your brain.

It is a message pushed 24/7 in our culture. When someone in a movie, TV show or interview calls someone on their lack of intelligence, the ACCUSER is the bad person in that situation, for "insulting someone's intelligence."

Yet in these situations, the heroic character--usually a feeling, "compassinoate" woman--the one the TV show, interview or whatever has invested with moral authority, the audience is to applaud when someone calls someone out for "not caring" or "thinking only of money" or "Being selfish".

Our society is being overwhelmed by people who think logic is a sham, something machines deal with, while real, true, GOOD humans are motivated entirely by....their feeeeelings.

Or maybe your friends are just stupid.

As Reagan said, to paraphrase, it isn't that Democrats are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't true.

Democrats are "intellectually challenged". They lack critical thinking skills, and knowledge of history. They take the propaganda they hear on TV and read in the newspapers as abolute fact.

There are three things you should not talk about in a office group setting if you wish to rise in a company. Those three things are Politics, Religion and Sex. (also do not talk about your paycheck)

Even on lunch or break diving deeply into any of those three subjects can cause ill will and division in a office team and you are a team. They are subjects that are very personal, very emotional and people do not act logically when they are arguing heatedly about them.

For political conversation I suggest you look outside of work. People who stir things up at the office tend not to be regarded well by management.

You know they did discuss politics with you, you just didn't notice it. The smartass remark about "your" governor, Mitt Romney, for example was straight out of the liberal asshat playbook. I would've told them, "You don't want to talk politics, then don't make stupid political statements like 'your governor', mmmmK?"
